St. Clare of Montefalco A Catholic Community in Detroit and Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan Michaelite Fathers From the Desk of our Pastor Blessed New Year! Today we celebrate that the child born in the darkness of night in a lowly manger is revealed as the manifestation (epiphany) of God. Christ is revealed in many ways: as Lord, as King, as the one in whom God is present and acts. Traditionally, three events in the life of Jesus are remembered today as manifestations of God’s presence and action through Christ: the visit of the Magi, the wedding in Cana, and the Baptism of the Lord in the River Jordan. We pray today that Christ will be present and visible to others in each of us through the way we act and live. Be Bold. Be Holy. Be Catholic. Blessing of our homes The feast of the Epiphany of the Lord gave birth to the tradition of marking the door of our homes with chalk and this inscription: 20+C+M+B+18. The number of the New Year is split at the beginning and end. The initials C, M, and B represent Casper, Melchior and Balthasar and the three crosses stand for "saint." The letters also abbreviate the prayer: "Christus Mansionem Benedicat" which means May Christ Bless this House. So today you may take the chalk home, gather around the inside of the front door, and use it to inscribe the numbers and letters on the frame while saying: "May Christ bless this house". Throughout the year those who come and go through that door will enjoy the blessing of Christ. This ritual casts a Christian interpretation on the threshold we cross at the beginning of the calendar year. Chalk is available at the Christmas manger site. If there is anyone that would like me to come and bless the house please call the office 313-647-5030 Baptism of the Lord On Monday, we celebrate the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. It is the feast that proclaims the Baptism that elevates us to the status of daughters and sons of God. This very act of John and Jesus brings a new dimension to the relationship between God and all The Spirit We bring together and welcome into our Catholic Community a richly diverse people to pray, to serve, and to learn in the name and presence of Jesus Christ. God’s people. All are invited to the 8 am Mass during which we will renew our baptismal promises. Be Holy. Welcome Back Our teachers and students have returned to class and this Wednesday we resume our school Mass schedule. Our many ministry groups are also back to work with meetings and activities. Wishing all a blessed new year of Unleashing the Gospel. Ordinary Time The winter portion of the Ordinary Time is but a few weeks. It is the time in which our faith can flourish and grow. Last week’s bulletin inserts had an array of initiatives to deepen our faith. Perhaps one of the great opportunities of these five weeks is to make our discipleship visible not only through our words but also through our deeds. Last Sunday we celebrated the feast of the Holy Family. How about taking the portion of the Unleash the Gospel letter that speaks about the family (page 39) and see where the Holy Spirit guides you? In this way, Ordinary Time becomes anything but ordinary. Another option could be to set aside Thursday evening for gathering with St. Luke and his second masterpiece, the Acts of the Apostles. Be Bold and be equipped for the service of the Gospel. Vocation Dinner Join us on Saturday January 13th for the Vocation Dinner in our parish hall. Dinner will be prepared by our Knights of Columbus in honor of our seminarians: Deacon Christopher Muer, Mr. Colin Fricke, Bros. Anthony and Luke VanBerkum, and Bro. Matthew Warnez. Our guest speaker will be Fr. Patrick Gonyeau.

Parish Clustering In early 2018, with the assistance of the AOD, a transition team will be formed to discuss and plan the best way to move forward in the clustering process. Parishioners from both communities will be represented on the team. More information will be posted in the near future. Please keep us in your prayer. Have a blessed New Year, Fr. Andrew

Parish Clustering Prayer

Father in heaven, You are calling us to grow beyond our parish life that

has become so familiar and comfortable.

As we form a new faith community, we want to respond to your call with generosity and trust in your loving

providence.

Help us to honestly face our sense of loss. Give us courage to work

through our differences and open our hearts that we may embrace our new

brothers and sisters.

Give us one mind and one heart as we journey together, building your

kingdom, through Christ our Lord,

Amen

Christian Service and Stewardship

Maintenance Corner 2018 is going to bring some big changes to my maintenance team at St. Clare. Long time

maintenance associate, Dennis Hermann, will be retiring in the spring after over 32 years of service to St. Clare of Montefalco. I am grateful for everything he has taught me about St. Clare and her buildings. While he is not leaving any time soon, I am interested in looking for a possible replacement to train with Dennis and walk the property with him for a couple of months. A smile; a positive attitude; a willingness to work with the St. Clare Team are very important for this job. Also, a knowledge or license for low pressure boiler operation is very important. General HVAC, electrical and mechanical skills needed to maintain equipment and upkeep of facilities. Daily custodial work to maintain floors, bathrooms, and property inside and out. Need to be able to climb a ladder and do heavy lifting. This job is full-time and offers benefits.

Happy New Year

The St. Clare Warm Hands, Warm Hearts collection will take place on the weekend of January 20-21. This annual

collection at the doors after masses support the warming center programs for St. Aloysius Neighborhood Services and Pope Francis Center. We provide hand warmers for their programs and additional gifts of money to support their good works. The cold weather has really been brutal the past couple of weeks for those without a permanent home. Thank you to the many organizations who assist the most vulnerable. We are glad to be able to help support your good works with our donations.

Please Mark your calendar for one of our regular St. Clare Blood Drives. Thank you Tamara Smith for chairing this event. Wednesday

January 17 - 2:00 – 8:00 PM in the Church Social Hall. Mark your calendar to join us on February 4 for a Super Bowl Tailgate Party in the Church Social Hall. The PIC Committee will be your hosts for this fun family

event. Watch the game on our jumbo screen. After our successful Tailgate Party during Oktoberfest we are excited to try something different this year. We will provide pizza and hotdogs. We will ask guests to bring a dish to share and your beverage of choice. Tickets will be $10. More details will be coming soon.

St_w[r^ship Thoughts

The Epiphany of the Lord Today’s Gospel from St. Matthew narrates the story of the Magi who visit the Christ-child, the newborn King. So overwhelmed during their initial encounter, they adore Jesus by prostrating themselves, face down, then offer Him gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These gifts prefigure Christ’s royalty, divinity, and suffering. The Scripture readings from Isaiah and St. Paul further express how the Good News of salvation is to be professed to all people. Do we, as Christian stewards, follow the example the Magi set in offering adoration, praise, and glory to God? Do we gratefully honor Him by living the Good News, making Him personal in our lives, and then spreading His joy, peace, and message of salvation to everyone we meet? To deepen your life in Christ, attend Alpha or a similar evangelization event at your parish

Secondly, Tim Panas, my part-time maintenance associate is leaving us in late January. Tim has been with us for over five years and will be missed for all the duties he performs. Once again, I am looking for someone to positively represent the St. Clare family. We are often the first one a possible new parishioner meets. Skills for this job include many of the ones above but largely focuses on custodial work on the facilities: floors, bathrooms, helping buff and wax the floors, grounds upkeep, light repairs, painting, and social hall set-ups. Once again, climbing a ladder and heavy lifting occasionally needed. This job is part-time without benefits to start with a potential for growth. If you think you would like to join our team or know someone, please send resumes, work experiences and a letter of interest to [email protected].

St. Clare Faith Formation and Community News

Thank you!

May the year ahead be blessed with happiness, holiness and

all goodness.

Children’s Faith Formation: Sunday family classes resume this morning after the 9:00 Mass. Monday classes begin Monday at 4 and 6:30. Next Sunday, January 14 we invite all students in grades 8, 5 and K to join the parish for a social in the hall. All families are asked to bring a breakfast treat to share. Also at this Mass the 8th graders will begin their final preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. There will be a student and sponsor/parent meet-ing following the Mass. 8th graders are asked to bring their Bap-tismal candle. Adult Faith Formation: This Thursday, January 11, begins our new series on the Acts of the Apostles, Evangelization. Each of us is called by our Baptism to “reach out and touch someone” with the love of Jesus and invite them to get to know and love Jesus. This series should help us to do that. Registration is online. Please see information around the church and in other spots in this bul-letin. Have your forgotten about your “Betsy Box?” Do you keep it filled and distribute as needed? I hope so. Have you forgotten to look at our FORMED programming? If you have not registered there is still time. I am still 200 short of my goal of a year ago. To register go to formed.org. Scroll down to “register,” Fill in information and use our parish code of 6ZGVKQ. Then you are invited to a multitude of heavenly information to increase your love of God, Scripture, and even fun. There are movies families can watch together. There are tapes you can listen to in your car on the way to/from work. I just listened to Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, (remember him?) on the meaning of Christmas and the Incarnation. Check these out this week: January 7. SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

Watch: The Story of the Nativity Listen: Prepare the Way of the King; The Story of Christmas; The King is Born.

January 8. SOLEMNITY OF THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD Study: Wild Goose, Segment 3: Baptism in the Holy Spirit and Fire; Wild Goose, Segment 7: The Spirit of Adoption. Read: Sacraments in Scripture. Listen: Changed Forever.

I, Sr. Kathy, and Sr. M. Peter too, would like to thank each of you who prayed for me, sent cards, emails, good wishes, food, gifts to me during my “incarceration!” I am finally feeling like myself but it has been a long journey. I appreciate all your prayers and good thoughts. They helped a lot. God bless you.

Destiny Pitts, St. Clare Class of 2013 and Falcon Award Winner, stopped by the gym during Christmas Break. Pitts is currently a freshman at the University of Minnesota and starting on their Women's Basketball Team. Pitts stated, "I'll never forget who/what helped me become the per-son I am today! St. Clare School and Athletic Program played an instrumental role in helping me become success-ful." Once a Falcon, Always a Falcon. We invite you all to stop by the gym for our remain-ing home dates on J a nu a r y 13th, Janu-ary 20th and February 10th.

To my St. Clare Family - I continue t o be humbled by your many, many kindnesses to me throughout the year. Now at this special time of giving I'm once again over whelmed by your generous gifts. Thank you! Some of you know that I volunteer at Freedom House in Detroit where I am so privileged to serve refugees who come to our country seeking peace and freedom - arriving here with absolutely nothing. Thus, Jesus' mandate: "To whom much has been given much will be expected." He's speaking to me. I will use your generous gifts to continue to support those causes which are working to make this world a more peaceful, kind, inclusive, and healthy home for all of our sisters and brothers as well as all of God's beautiful creatures with whom we share this earth. Copious blessings on you and your families in 2018! Gratefully always, Valerie Binder, CSJ

Thank you!
