Of a broken service model

Logging hours

• At school…until they become real wage earners

• As security guards… until they become real police

• At the mall… until???

• Garey Busey has????

Elementary School was a breeze…then I got on the recycling program

• I learned to sort cans

After graduation I was lost

• Even the home schooled kids found their niche

• Maybe it’s me?• Maybe it’s my outfit??• Maybe I’ll be a special

Olympian???

But my mom says…

• Want to make connections with people other than mom

The bright side

Day Programs

• Bowling• Collage• Bowling

Paid support???

• Well intentioned service providers

Mom + high school=not cool

Not that I’m comparing myself to a pet, but…

• People befriend their pets• The world has become

more accommodating to pet owners

• People have capitalized on what is now a pet industry

If pets, then why not me???

Inclusion is a movement like the women’s movement

• women first got a role in the workforce out of necessity

• World war one happened and there were no men to work in the factories

• I got a job as a Wal-Mart greeter

• Dignity happened and no one else wanted to wear the blue smock

Keep it simpleRemember:

• I’m not going to function at the same level you are

• You might get frustrated with me• I don’t have a lot of practice with real

interaction so I’m probably not going to be good at it right away

• It will be worth it• Diversity has always prove itself fruitful in

our culture
