Medical West has been meeting needs of customers since 1955. The family owned business is dedicated to personal service and is committed to providing each customer with the most up-to-date information and products available.
It all started 60 years ago with a pharmacy located in a professional medical building. Pharmacy customers had so many questions that they were unable or uncomfortable asking their physicians and sought the advice of pharmacist Sylvan Sandler, the company’s founder. As his relationship with his customers grew, he saw the need to provide more than prescription fulfillment. Customers needed a local source for specialty medical products of all kinds and more importantly, needed information about which products worked best and instruction about product usage. Medical West grew quickly and is today our community’s go-to source for all sorts of medical equipment and expert guidance. With three locations, customers have grown to trust and rely on the services offered.
Medical West has been a great resource, advising and providing much needed products for Gateway to Hope patients. The Clayton location has a

breast care boutique staffed by trained and certified fitters with thirty years of experience specializing in breast cancer after care. A properly fitting garment is very important and the most difficult part of providing the patient with what they need. If our patients need compression garments like lymphedema sleeves and gloves, specialty brassieres and/or breast prostheses, the fitters at Medical West are there to guide them.
The staff at Medical West also provides insurance coverage information. Most of the devices needed by breast cancer patients are covered by insurance. Medical West fitters are all familiar with the basic benefits that plans typically offer. They get specific information on the client’s plan by having Medical West customer service representatives contact the insurance plan to get guidelines for the patient. If not covered, GTH’s Thelma’s Gift Fund is available to cover cost for these items for individuals who qualify.
Dayle Sandler, Medical West’s breast boutique manager at the Clayton store, stresses the importance of customer service. “What we offer really makes a difference. We work very hard to offer compliance and success. In addition to being experts in product knowledge, our staff keeps up with the constantly changing and challenging requirements of health insurance. We are able to navigate this maze so that the patient is able to access the benefits she is paying for and entitled to. Many women don’t realized what their plan offers” Dayle said.
Mary Lee Salzer, GTH’s Executive Director says, “We are grateful to Medical West for all they do helping our patients recovering from breast cancer treatment. Medical West is an important resource and offers compassionate expertise for our patients. Thank you, Dayle, and your team from all of us at Gateway to Hope.”

BOARD & STAFF
In my last message I wrote about the challenges Gateway to Hope faced regarding the constantly changing healthcare landscape. We’ve been aggressive in dealing with these challenges and the results are dramatic. The past six months have been some of the most exciting and productive since our founding almost 10 years ago. Elsewhere in this newsletter you’ll read about our innovative new Insurance Premium Program that expands our mission to secure comprehensive care. You’ll also learn about great additions to our board of directors. Our dedicated board continues to generate more ideas on how we can improve the lives of those diagnosed with breast cancer.
That said, what I want to do is tell you a story about something I recently experienced. I attended the wonderful St. Louis Men’s Group Against Cancer’s awards luncheon where grants are given to more than 35 recipients. This group of St. Louis businessmen is dedicated to raising funds to help the local cancer community, and provide grants to cancer-related nonprofits. I’m honored to say Gateway to Hope was a grant recipient again this year. Just prior to Gateway to Hope’s turn at the podium, a woman representing another organization stepped up to the microphone. In her presentation she explained that she was a survivor of breast cancer and that she started a not-for-profit that donates recliner chairs to those who had just experienced a mastectomy, since this made the recovery less painful.
When she finished, she stepped out of the room, and I took advantage of the opportunity to meet her and suggest that our organizations collaborate. I explained that many of our patients could not afford the cost of one of these chairs. When I introduced myself as the Board President of Gateway to Hope, she threw her arms around me, gave me a warm, thoughtful hug and said…”thank you so much. I’m a patient of Gateway to Hope and it has been my lifesaver.” Powerful moments like this remind me why I do what I do and why our staff and board all work so hard to continue our mission.
Our founders had an idea a decade ago and that idea became a reality. At the awards luncheon last month, I experienced the reality and the power of that idea through the eyes of another. I felt in her hug what it truly means to be touched by Gateway to Hope.
Thanks to all of you who support us in so many ways and allow us to make sure that there will be many more hugs in the future.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

For the past seven years, SSM Health Care – St. Louis has been and continues to be a proud medical partner with Gateway to Hope (GTH) to provide care for individuals in need who have been diagnosed with or at a high-risk for developing breast cancer. GTH is an organization whose work is to secure comprehensive care and provide financial assistance to these individuals.
As a medical partner, SSM Health Care donates breast care services, including breast surgeries, radiology, mammo-grams and other defined care. In addition, for those pa-tients in need of more intensive care, SSM designs a care plan from diagnosis through reconstructive procedures. The plan is also designed to include oncological services for each patient for a full year.
“There are more than 200,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer every year,” says Dr. Josh Glaser, SSM Breast Care physician. “The need for diagnosis and treat-ment is crucial. Early detection and advanced treatments can help save more lives than ever before. Organizations like Gateway to Hope are a critical bridge for patients without health care coverage and vital to the well-being of our community.”
SSM HEALTH CARE – ST. LOUIS AND GATEWAY TO HOPE A POWERFUL ALLIANCE
Dr. Josh Glaser and Pamela Bunting, SSM Breast Care physicians, GTH Partner Providers
PARTNER STORY
SSM Breast Care combines the powerful resources and exper-tise across St. Louis to offer the best possible care with com-passion, quality and technology from screening and diagnosis to treatment and follow-up support.
SSM Health Care offers these services at their six area adult hospitals:
• SSM St. Clare Health Center, Fenton• SSM St. Mary’s Health Center, Richmond Heights• SSM DePaul Health Center, Bridgeton• SSM St. Joseph Health Center, St. Charles• SSM St. Joseph Health Center, Wentzville• SSM St. Joseph Hospital West, Lake St. Louis
“Breast cancer really is evolving from a terminal disease to a chronic or curable condition,” says Dr. Pamela Bunting, SSM Breast Care physician. “And breast health is becoming better understood so that women can take the most appropriate tests to reduce their cancer risk. I feel programs like Gateway to Hope are an important part in treating women. Financial
issues should not cause women to forgo very important treatment. Programs like Gateway to Hope provide relief for women who are overwhelmed and don’t know what to do.”
SSM Breast Care offers the latest advancements in breast imaging which makes it possible to magnify and sharpen the image to carefully examine any suspicious areas. These types of services are especially helpful for pre-menopausal women who have denser breasts. With the new 3D Mammography along with traditional and advanced digital screenings to provide rapid diagnosis and the most advanced treatment options which can lead to the best possible outcomes for all of our patients.
The mission of SSM Health Care is “Through our exceptional health care services, we reveal the healing presence of God.” Taking care of those in need, regardless of their ability to pay is rooted in SSM Health Care’s 142 year heritage. This program is just one of the many programs SSM offers to patients to help ensure access to high quality health care is available to everyone.
With Tara’s cheerful smile and positive attitude, it is not obvious that recently she faced some of the toughest challenges in her 35 years. Cancer takes courage and Tara has it!
In January 2014, Tara was diagnosed with stage 3B breast cancer that had spread to her lymph nodes. During a subsequent full body MRI in March, several masses were revealed on her thyroid. The diagnosis: thyroid cancer which would require a total thyroidectomy.
In April, another tragedy struck her family. Tara’s ex-husband, father of her two children, lost his battle with prostate cancer.
Tara continued to manage her life, working in a high paced corporate office for a power plant and after hours, coaching a little league softball team. She did all of this while undergoing chemotherapy. Tara’s oncologist informed her that she would not be able to continue at this pace because of the strain placed on her body. She realized that she had to slow down and decided to take medical leave from her employer and cut back on other activities.
Tara was referred to Gateway to Hope by Siteman Cancer Center. She was eligible to receive assistance from GTH through a special fund called Gail’s Legacy. This program assists by paying insurance premiums while the patient is receiving treatment.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Tara said. “When Gateway to Hope told me they were able to provide assistance I fought back tears. The generosity and sincerity that they showed was more than moving,” she continued.
Tara strongly believes that early detection and an optimistic attitude are the answers to survival. She has become an advocate for mammography and early detection and has encouraged others to do so.
As a strange coincidence Tara’s mom, Judy, had skipped her annual mammogram and at Tara’s urging, scheduled an appointment. In a shocking turn of events, Judy was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer after her mammogram. She was lucky because of early detection and treatment and today is a breast cancer survivor.
These stories are not uncommon to the nurses at Gateway to Hope. Tara endured chemotherapy, three blood transfusions, mastectomy, lymphadenectomy, thyroidectmy, external radiation, iodine radiation and full hysterectomy. She is currently scheduled for her last procedure mastectomy with reconstructive surgery. She has comfort in knowing that Gateway to Hope and Gail’s Legacy will cover her insurance payments while she is in active treatment.
Through the generosity of Gateway to Hope donors, funding is available to provide assistance for patients like Tara.
