Page 4: Contentsitepeyac.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/sf6.pdf · • ANSI C57.12.28 Standard for Padmount Enclosures Tests were conducted at recog-nized, independent power testing laboratories,

The following data are the result oftests on standard productionPufferPak load break switches. The switches were tested perapplicable portions of IEEE, ANSI,NEMA, and other industry stan-dards including:

• ANSI C37.71 Standard forSubsurface Load InterruptingSwitches.

• ANSI C37.72 Standard forPadmount Load InterruptingSwitches.

• ANSI C37.60 Standard for FaultInterrupters

• ANSI/IEEE 386 Standard forSeparable Connectors andBushings.

• IEC 265 International Standardsfor Load Interrupting Switches.

• ASTM D-2472 Specification forCommercial Type ElectricalGrade SF6.

• ANSI C57.12.28 Standard forPadmount Enclosures

Tests were conducted at recog-nized, independent power testinglaboratories, including KEMA inHolland. Test results were verifiedby oscillograms and high-speed

movies. As required by ANSI stan-dards, all tests were performed ina specific sequence without anymaintenance to the switch or SF6.Tests were conducted at 15.5, 27,and 38 kV levels on approximately75 different switches including 2-,3-, and 4-way configurations.Tosimulate actual service conditions, the tests were run at various SF6gas pressures and with switchesmounted in typical subsurface andpadmount applications.

Switch Design

PufferPak SF6 switches aredesigned and constructed toprovide economical, safe and reli-able switching in a small, light-weight package. Using SF6 forinsulation and arc-interruptioneliminates space, weight andmaintenance costs, as well ashazards associated with vacuum, air or oil-filled equipment. In addi-tion, PufferPak switches provideimproved interrupting and opengap performance.

Switches can be mounted in anyposition and any environment, including Class 1, Division 1,hazardous locations. Maintenanceis minimized with sealed construc-tion that is unaffected by contami-nation, rodents, or floods.

Switch components are containedin a welded, mild or stainless steeltank factory-filled with SF6, elimi-nating exposed live parts andproviding complete deadfront operation.

SF6 Dielectric

Sulfur hexaflouride gas (SF6)contributes to the safety, insulatingand load-interrupting performanceof PufferPak switches. SF6 is non-flammable, non-toxic, colorlessand odorless. At 0 PSIG, SF6 has21⁄2 times the insulating quality ofdry air. Under moderate pressure, insulating and arc-extinguishingqualities increase.

PufferPak switches are shippedpre-filled with SF6, and are electri-cally tested and leak-tested toinsure proper operation. Inside theswitch tank, a special absorbentneutralizes any possible arc by-products, reducing field mainte-nance to an occasional check ofthe color-coded pressure gauge.

Puffer Action

The PufferPak switch capitalizeson the pressure/insulation curve ofSF6, as well as the electronega-tive characteristics of the gas andits ability to absorb and transferheat and free electrons rapidlyfrom an arc.

To amplify the arc-extinguishingabilities of SF6, the switch incorpo-rates a patented, self-generatingpuffer action that forces a pressur-ized stream of SF6 through thecontact area during switching. Thisincreased pressure increases theinsulation level while simultane-ously cooling and extinguishing thearc. In the full-open position, thecontacts are separated by a 3"open gap, giving a 200 kV BILflashover withstand.

Contact System

PufferPak switches feature self-aligning pin-and-socket contactsconstructed of silver-plated copperwith tungsten-copper arcing tips.Contacts are designed to preventdamage to main contact surfacesduring operation, and provideincreased contact pressure withincreased currents in the closedposition.

PufferPak switches incorporateself-cleaning, wiping-type contactsalong with Belleville washers andlocking fasteners at critical currentconnections for long life and maintenance-free operation.

SF6 Puffer action is self-generating using theSF6 contained in the switch tank.Arc extinc-tion occurs at first current zero.

Contact movement createsthe puffer action whichmomentarily increases thedielectric strength and arc-extinguishing properties ofSF6 at the time it is neededduring load break switching.During contact opening (Fig.B), the puffer action forces apressurized stream of SF6through the contact area, cooling and extinguishing thearc at the first current zero.During contact closure (Fig.D), the puffer cone com-presses the column of SF6ahead of the contact, eliminat-ing pre-strike contact damage. In the full-open position (Fig.C), a three-inch gap provides200 kV BIL withstand andpermits DC testing.

PadmountEnclosuresfor Subsurface Switches

Extend the flexibility of subsurfaceswitches to include padmountapplications. Standard enclosuresare 60" HIGH x 72" WIDE x 54"DEEP and will house 2- thru 6-waysubsurface switches. The tamper-resistant enclosure provides plentyof room for cable training andswitch operation with easy accessthru a padlockable door.

Enclosures are constructed ofweather-resistant 12-gauge mildsteel, painted dark green.Enclosures are shipped knockeddown, and come with stainlesssteel hardware, wind stops, vent-ing, lifting, mounting provisionsand instructions for easy fieldassembly.

Parking Stands

Parking stands provide for ground-ing, testing, and isolating cableconnections.Wall-mounted parkingstands allow convenient elbowremoval from subsurface switchesin vault or padmount applications.Equipment-mounted parkingstands are standard on LPG6switches and are optional on PG6,PRG6, SRG6, AND SG6.

Operating Handle Adapters

Operating handle adapters allowangle of handle to be changed forconvenient switch operation inlocations where the standardhandle is inadequate. Adaptorsbolt directly to operating handlesfor 45, 90, or “universal” 15 degreeoperating positions.

Mechanical Interlocks

Mechanical interlocks prevent suchunwanted operations as parallelingof feeders – a moveable stainlesssteel bar prevents the closing ofone switch unless adjacent switchis open. Interlocks are bolt-on, andhookstick operable, and permit allstandard operation features of theswitch.

Key Interlocks

Key interlock provisions may beadded to switch operating handlesto coordinate operation with otherequipment such as preventingaccess to an energized compart-ment. The stainless steel bolt-oninterlock provision will accept anystandard B1E keylock. Whenordering, specify desired lockingarrangement: lock in closed posi-tion; lock in open position; or lockin both open and closed position.

SF6 Refill Cylinders

SF6 refill cylinders provide a light-weight, convenient method ofadding SF6 to a switch in the fieldshould it ever become necessary.Tank contains enough SF6 forseveral refills.Kit includestank, regu-lator,valve andhoseconnection tothe fill valve onthe switch.

Fused PufferPak Switches*

Fused PufferPak Switches provideovercurrent protection for cableruns, transformers, motors, capaci-tor banks and other distributionsystem equipment.

SF6 Power Fuses, rated 3 thru200 Amp, are non-venting andcontained within bushing-connected molded rubber fuse-holders. Fuses are deadfront, submersible, hotstick replaceableand elbow-connected to the load-side.

Current Limiting Fuse

Current limiting fuses, rated 40Amp maximum, are containedwithin drywell fuseholders attachedto the switch. The fuseholderseals and protects the fuseduring operation and allowshotstick removal andreplacement.

Remote Cable Operators

Remote cable operators provideremote manual switching wherehookstick, rope, or motor-driveswitching prove impractical. A flexi-ble, armored cable connects theswitch operating handle to aremote rotary crank. Turning thecrank operates the switch.Included are position indicators, padlock provisions and mountingbrackets for bolt-on attachment toswitch. Remote Operation with SCADAInterface

PufferPak SF6 switches can beeasily upgraded for SCADA or fullyautomatic operation with the addi-tion of state-of-the-art motor oper-ators, controls, and current andvoltage sensors as required.

Standard operating voltage is 24VDC using a self-contained batteryand charger which can beconnected to any convenientcustomer-supplied 120 VACsource. For manual override inemergency situations, the motoroperators are fitted with quickdisconnect pins, which allowmanual operation of the switch inthe normal manner.

Control of the motor operators isattained using state-of-the-artcurrent-sensing logic, eliminatingthe need for mechanical limitswitch adjustment in the field.

Electronic controls are containedin a NEMA 4 enclosure, withswing-out panel, and a hinged, padlockable door, along with 20 ft.of control cable for each motor.NEMA 6P bolted cover style enclo-sures are also available forsubmersible applications.

SCADA interface is provided toaccept either customer suppliedRTU, or a complete packageincluding RTU can be supplied.Various protocols are supported.Consult factory for details.

Automatic Transfer Control

The micro-processor based auto-transfer control is ideal for main-taining power to critical loads suchas hospitals, airports, shoppingcenters, etc. A user-friendly LCDdisplay allows field personnel toscroll through various parameters, following explicit, easy instructions.

The auto-transfer control is basi-cally a IED with on board SCADAcapability, removing need for sepa-rate RTU in various applications.

Several configurations are avail-able including preferred/non-preferred feeder selection, as wellas make before break on thereturn transfer to prevent a secondoutage to customers.

For non-protected loads, fault indi-cators are supplied to preventtransfer of a feeder onto a faultedcircuit.

Ratings and Performance

The load break switch shall betested and rated per ANSI C37.71and C37.72.

Padmount EnclosureConstruction

For padmount installations, atamper-resistant housing shall beprovided. The enclosure will beconstructed of 12-gauge-thick mildsteel, stiffened and cross-kinkedfor watershed and rigidity. Allflanges shall overlap and interlockto discourage unauthorized entry. The design shall incorporate singleside access to minimize thenecessary space required foroperation. Access to the switchand cable compartments shall bethru lightweight hinged doors andhood. The enclosure will becompletely removable from theswitch to facilitate installation, maintenance, and, if necessary, replacement.

Padmount enclosures shallinclude:

• Recessed, 5/8"-11 threaded lift-ing provisions.

• Recessed padlock provision withpenta-head security bolt.

• Mounting provisions using inter-nal flange for anchoring.

• 300 series stainless steel hard-ware with the enclosure painteddark green (Munsell #7.0 GY3.29/1.5) 3 MIL thick over a zincrich primer.

• Door stops and stays to preventaccidental closing.

Pole Top Construction

For Pole Top installations, thebushings shall be designed andtested per ANSI 386 in 200 Ampdeepwell or 600 Amp apparatusstyle as required for elbowconnections or shall be 600 Ampstyle fitted with molded rubberinsulators for connection to airinsulated distribution lines.

Fault Interrupting SwitchConstruction

The load taps of padmount orsubmersible style switches shallbe complete with a ResettableFault Interrupter (RFI).

The interrupter shall be resettablewith no consumable parts (e.g.fuses). As a safety precaution, theinterrupter shall incorporate a tripfree mechanism, which will causethe device to trip open in the eventthat the operator should close intoa fault, with no effect felt throughthe operating handle.

The interrupter shall be a truethree-phase internal mechanism.Devices that are mechanicallyganged externally are not acceptable.

The interrupter shall also act as athree-phase group operated load-break switch.

Interrupter status shall be providedby means of a mechanical positionindicator consisting of a magneticstrip activated by a vertical rodconnected to the moving contactof the vacuum interrupter.

Over current sensing shall beaccomplished with an electronictrip control. The control shall useexternal current transformers tosense and monitor load currents.Trip and time-current curves shallbe field selectable. Trip settingmay be changed while switch is energized so that service is notinterrupted.

An optional LCD display, or RS232port shall be provided in order toobtain real time current data andtime and cause of last trip.

Electronic control shall be suitablefor future remote trip and/or resetvia supervisory control.

Typical Switch Installation

PufferPak switches are shippedfactory filled with SF6 and includeall necessary accessories forinstallation except for elbows, which are furnished by the user.

1. Uncrate, attach handles, andcheck operation.

2. Mount switch into position, leaving sufficient room for cabletraining and operation. Install tofloor, ceiling, or walls for bestutilization of space.

3. Train and connect cables andground leads. Elbow adaptorsand extensions may be used toaid cable training or facilitate200 Amp connections.

4. Energize and operate switchwithin its ratings.

Switch Operation

To open or close switch, moveoperating handle toward desiredposition. At the end of the handletravel, an internal spring-operatedmechanism will move contacts toposition shown on indicator. Theswitch may be operated remotelyusing a hookstick or rope and maybe padlocked into position.

Application and Practical Usageof SF6

The application of gas-filled equip-ment requires some knowledge ofthe practical handling of SF6. Thefollowing considerations can helpin establishing the proper operat-ing procedures.

A. Availability andSpecifications

SF6 is readily available from anyof several suppliers, including

Allied Chemical and Air Products. The use of commercial-grade SF6per ASTM D-2472 is recom-mended and may be obtained incylinder sizes ranging from 6 to115 lbs. SF6 is a colorless, odor-less, non-toxic, and non-flammablegas.

B. Operating and Maintenance

PufferPak switches have beendesigned and evaluated using thelevels established by ANSI C37.71standards, which assures thenormal life of the equipment with-out any maintenance. In practice,as long as the design ratings arenot exceeded, the only mainte-nance required is the regularmonitoring of SF6 pressure andchecking of the equipment forproper working condition. Theswitch is equipped with a color-coded pressure gauge which indi-cates the quantity of SF6 gas andthe quality of the sealing system.

C. Field Adding of SF6

Switches are shipped factory filledwith SF6 to approximately 10PSIG. Although gauge pressurevaries with temperature, the switchshould always be operated withinits normal pressure range of 2-15PSIG. If field addition of SF6becomes necessary, add the SF6through the fill valve provided onthe tank.
