7502 2 nd Street Burnaby, BC, V3N 3R5 Phone: 604-296-9029 http://secondstreet.burnabyschools.ca March 1, 2018 Principal: Mr. Jeff Harding Head Teacher: Ms Lindsay Holliday Coordinator: Ms. Gayle Beavil At Second Street Community School, we are committed to be a respectful, joyful, and safe learning environment where we all strive to be our best. Dear Second Street families, How time flies. It seems like we just returned from the winter break and we are now at the end of February. The past couple of months have been busy times. The students learned and performed their hip hop routines, the boys and girls basketball teams have had successful seasons that are just winding down and today we celebrated Pink Shirt Day. At our assembly we learned of the origins of Pink shirt day and reinforced the message of treating everyone with kindness. I like the current tagline of “Nice needs no filter.” With the proliferation of online activities and access we need to remember that our actions, even virtual ones, have consequences. We are just a couple of weeks away from spring break and with that comes term two report cards. These will be sent home on March 14. Please keep the insert, but return the envelope. If you would like to meet with your child’s teacher please indicate this by checking the appropriate box on the envelope. The last day of school before the break is Friday March 16 and students will return to school on Tuesday April 3. That month students will participate in PASS soccer, Earth day and students led conferences will be at the end of the month. The year certainly isn’t slowing down! Sincerely, J. 1. If you have any changes to your child’s information (address, home phone, email, cell, your work
number or emergency contact changes) please let the school office know as soon as possible. This
information is critical if the school needs to contact you in an emergency. You can send this
information via a note with your child. If your address has changed then we will need a document to
copy for your child(ren)’s school files. These documents could be a phone bill, hydro bill, electric bill,
rental or purchase agreement, driver’s license with current address.
2. If your child is going to be absent due to illness, has a medical appointment, vacation etc., please call
the school before 9:00 a.m. 604.296.2909 and press 2 for our absentee line and leave a message.
Please be sure to state your child’s name, teacher and reason for absence. If your child arrives late,
please have them check in at the office before going to class. Please call the school office and not
email the classroom teacher.
3. There are many items in the LOST and FOUND! Please check for any items that your child may have lost.
Small items such as jewelry, glasses or keys are in the office. Lost & Found items will be placed on
display in the hallway outside the gym door March 10th to March 11th. Unclaimed items will be
donated to charity.
A NOTE FROM THE COMMUNITY OFFICE From Gayle Beavil, Community School Coordinator
At a recent Community Council Meeting (we call them “Parent and Neighbour Meetings” – because
that’s what they are! Everyone is invited and welcome!), our opening activity had all of us ponder what
factors make an effective and connected community. As a group, we thought about the following:
Think of a time when you were made to feel part of a community? Why did you feel connected? How did
this community work so well?
Those at the meeting thought about thriving communities they had belonged to, and then discussed in
small groups. Their responses were that these communities:
extended personal invitations for help and involvement
worked together towards a goal
shared knowledge with new members – valued idea of mentorship
ensured people knew what to do or how to participate
had common goals or outcomes
ensured members felt needed and respected for their strengths
cared about each other and the community as a whole
had someone in the role of “connector” – to specifically welcome, connect people and build
relationships in the group
Wise words! Food for thought for all communities to ponder. Do the communities you are involved in do
these things?
How do you extend personal invitations?
Are you clear on our goals?
Do people feel valued?
Do you pass along our knowledge?
How do you make folks feel needed and respected?
Do you show care for the whole community?
Are there people who specifically connect, welcome and build relationships?
The next Parent and Neighbour Meeting is: Monday, March 5 from 9:00 – 10:30 am (We are alternating
daytime and evening meetings each month, so that we can engage as many parents and community
members as possible. The April meeting will be Tuesday, April 10 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm)

Clothing to Donate?
Did you know people can access gently-used clothing from Second Street's Clothing Cupboard?
The Clothing Cupboard is located upstairs in the Community Room and people are welcome to take the clothes they need. We accept donations of clean and gently used clothing, shoes and linens in our community room.
We have a new partnership with Big Brothers which means clothing that we do not use in our clothing cupboard will be picked up by Big Brothers and donated to Value Village. They pay us by the weight of the bags we give them, so please donate any clothing or linens that you are not using anymore! The money collected from your donations will be used to support school and community programs and activities.
It’s good for the environment and good for our community, too!
Come to this weekly program for Second Street parents and community members!
