The twenty chapters of Best Practice in Vascular Procedurescover the wide spectrum of daily vascular activities. The first part of the book describes the surgical andendovascular techniques of carotid artery revascularization, followed by evidence-based strategies for symptomatic andasymptomatic carotid artery disease. The second partconcentrates on lower limb arterial bypass surgery andendovascular revascularization in critical limb ischemia.Guidelines for open and endovascular treatment and themanagement of the diabetic foot complement the subjectof critical limb ischemia. Following, treatment of thoracicaortic pathology is addressed: open and endovasculartreatment of type A dissection, innovative treatment of archaneurysms, surgical and endoluminal management ofdescending and thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysms.Subsequently, open and endovascular surgery of infra- andsuprarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms are described indetail, followed by endovascular strategies in acute andruptured aneurysms. Based on existing scientific evidence, guidelines for abdominal aortic aneurysms are defined. Thelast part of this textbook consists of four subjects which play a major role in the future of vascularactivities: the ideal educational curriculum, centralization of vascular procedures, cost-effectiveness ofinterventions and finally the hybrid operating room.

relation to any specialty or origin of its af-filiated societies. All specialists coexist har-moniously so that they can provide the best treatment for our patients be they surgical or not. Our final aim is our patients.

Within this profile that already exists with-in the UIP, I want to reiterate that I see no option other than to aim for the highest sci-entific quality. However, although we have advanced dramatically, many areas remain empirical requiring a scientific evidence which should be achieved with the publica-tion of further work, monographs, double-blind randomized studies, etc. The partner-ship between the UIP and the IA which has now been reconfirmed will go a long way to achieve the above and establish a highly sci-entific phlebological practice. I urge all prac-ticing phlebologists and especially younger doctors to join this effort.

At least until the year 2015, when my term ends, IA will be our official magazine which should receive the vast majority of pub-lished phlebological studies, as well as the scientific documents of the UIP (consensus guidelines and others).

The scientific editors of IA led by his chief editor A. Nicolaides will continue with its commitment to integrity and high scientific level that is the hallmark of this publication.

EDITORIAL

Dear Readers and Subscribers,Dear Members of the UIPA. ScUdERI

President of the UIP

Since I took office as President of the Union Internationale de Phlebologie (UIP), one of my main goals was to continue the productive partnership between Interna-tional Angiology (IA) and our society.

The UIP is a federative scientific soci-ety formed by different national societies, whose number increases with each passing year. International Angiology, our official journal, is one of most important journals in the field of Angiology which involves the study of all vessels: arteries, veins and lym-phatic.

Phlebology has been one of the medical areas with rapid recent advances thanks to the arrival of new technologies allowing us to improve dramatically not only diagnosis and treatment as well as the understanding of venous hemodynamics and pathophysiol-ogy.

Phlebology is an area of medicine where several established specialties such as vas-cular surgery, dermatology, cardiology, hematology, general practice and general surgery, converge. However, although phle-bology is widely practiced throughout the world, many countries still do not consider it as an independent specialty.

UIP is characterized as a scientific soci-ety without any intolerance or distinction in
