9a/b Gee: The Berlin Wall – suggested solutions

(1) Tunnel 29: - the story takes place in 1961, the year the Berlin Wall was built - Joachim is a student, 22 years old, he had just managed to escape from East

Berlin to West Berlin - but now he wants to go back to help others escape - climbing the wall he faces being discovered by search lights and border guards - instead he decides to build a tunnel - the death strip is a section of land right next to the Wall, patrolled by border

guards - questions: individual answers

(3) Analysing statistics

Describe and interpret the statistics (M2) about refugees from the GDR. Explain the consequences of this development for the state, society and economy of the GDR.

The statistics, here in the visual form of a graph, shows the number of GDR-refugees on the y-axis and the timeline (40years) from 1949 until 1989 on the x-axis.

The most relevant data are mirrored in the peaks and in the lowest points of the graph as follows:

The highest number of people, roughly 350000 left the GDR in the year of the reunification in 1989/90, when the Brandenburg Gate was opened on November 99‘ and the Wall finally demolished; the second highest peak was in 1953, the time of the “People’s Revolt” in June of that year, when about 310 000 citizens left their country, and the third during the 1950’s (un-fortunately here only shown in a larger block), slightly less than 300000 people. Finally, the peak directly before the erection of the Wall in August 1961 needs to be pointed out, altogether more than 200 000 people in about three years.

The lowest series of refugees can obviously be seen in the years after 1961, from the time of the construction of the Wall until the end of 1988 — the last full year of its existence — about 960 000 people fled the GDR in those almost 27,5 years.

Interesting to note is the fact that despite the most grim fortification between the two German states and the most guarded borderline, there was never a time when there were no escapees; mathematically, 34 910 people have fled, which — again in terms of pure calculation — means 2 909 persons PER MONTH or 97 every day!

x The highest number of refugees always occurred in those times of GDR-History when people were particularly dissatisfied and drastic measures by the state were taken to keep their own people in the country as well as possible

(4) A letter/or diary entry

Individual answers!

Following aspects should be included:

x who flees? /how many people? x motives for fleeing/reasons for leaving x time (of year] day) x place / destination x means of transportation x at the border x preparations at home (short turn/long turn) x thoughts and feelings, hopes and fears x chances and risks x happy or tragic ending? x ideas or knowledge of the west in the East

M1 La moda española de hoy - LÖSUNGEN

Actividades 1.

2. a) 200 ml salpetersauren Lösung, HNO3 c = 0,175 "#$$ enthält wie viel H+-Ionen?

n=+,-./012/2+,42 =0,0035mol

Wenn man das Volumen berechnen will, muss man die Formel der Stoffmengenkonzentration wie folgt umstellen: c = %& V = %;

V = +,++</012+,++4012/2 = 17,7 l
