ITHACA COLLEGE Wrestling History

2 Wrestling 2006-07

The Ithaca College wrestling program is one ofDivision III’s most successful. The achieve-ments of Ithaca’s program include:

n three national team titles, (a total surpassed only by Brockport and the College of New Jersey);

n back-to-back NCAA championships in 1989-90;n eight top-five team finishes at the NCAA meet;n seven individual national champions; n 51 all-Americans, who have accumulated

77 total honors.The Bombers have won three national team titles

in the last 17 years. Ithaca wrestling had its beginning in 1930 at the

Seneca Gym in downtown Ithaca under the directionof Walter O’Connell, who had started the wrestlingprogram at neighboring Cornell University in 1908.Although his record at Ithaca was a modest 8-17-1 insix seasons, his efforts laid the program’s foundation.

A collegiate wrestling pioneer, O’Connell was inductedinto the Ithaca College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991.He had earned membership earlier in the CornellAthletic Hall of Fame and the National Wrestling Hallof Fame.

The program was temporarily discontinued in 1936but was brought back by O’Connell protégé and former Ithaca captain Clyde “Whitey” Cole in 1946.Ithaca College president Leonard Job, a wrestler asan undergraduate at Indiana University, also played akey role in the rebirth. An outstanding athlete, Job wasknown to participate in practice sessions with Bomberwrestlers. Ithaca made its first mark on the national levelunder Cole’s guidance with a 14th-place finish at theNCAA championships in 1949. The Bombers fol-lowed with a seventh-place showing the next season.

One standout during Cole’s four-year tenure wasJim LaRock. Unbeaten in four years of dual-meet

PEGGY R. WILLIAMSPresidentPeggy R. Williams assumed thepresidency of Ithaca College onJuly 1, 1997. She is the College'sseventh president and its firstfemale president.

Since taking the helm, PresidentWilliams has led a collaborative effort to pursue thevision of making Ithaca "the standard of excellence forresidential comprehensive colleges." To that end, shelaunched a campus-wide strategic planning process thatculminated in a blueprint for achieving the College'sessential priorities and goals. Since the adoption of theInstitutional Plan in 2001, progress has been made ina number of areas. For example, initiatives such as theMartin Luther King Jr. Scholar Program and the Centerfor the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity furtherthe College's commitment to diversity and to inter-disciplinary education. The Campus Master Plan provides a road map for major facilities and land usefor the next two decades. The academic profile of thestudent body has been strengthened, and the Center forFaculty Research and Development encourages facultyto pursue innovative teaching and research projects. In addition, President Williams's strong interest incommunity service, evidenced by the establishment ofa full-time coordinator of community service and suchannual programs as the Celebration of Service andCommunity Plunge, has resulted in an increase incampus volunteerism.

Williams came to Ithaca from Lyndon State College,where she had been president since 1989. She had previously worked at Trinity College in Burlington,Vermont, as associate academic dean, chair of the business and economics department and associate pro-fessor. She also held various positions within theVermont State Colleges system. Before entering the fieldof higher education, Williams was a social worker forthe Medical Center Hospital of Vermont and the MonroeCounty Department of Social Services in New York.

In 1990 the publisher of Creating Excellencemagazine named Williams one of Vermont's "top 10achievers." She was the first recipient of the Jackie M.Gribbons Leadership Award in 1984 from the AmericanCouncil on Education (ACE). The organization alsoestablished an honor in her name—the Margaret R.Williams Emerging Professional Award—to recognizethe accomplishments of young female professionals in higher education.

Active in community and professional organiza-tions, President Williams currently serves on the NCAADivision III Presidents Council and the ExecutiveCommittee Subcommittee on Gender and DiversityIssues, and on the boards of directors of the Canada-
