Standard Lip Seals vs. O-Ring Seals

Lip seal design seals are used on 1965-1982 Corvettecalipers and can suffer from an inherent problem called"Reverse Air Oscillation". GM quit using lip seal calipersbecause of this in 1982. These issues would occur whenyour Corvette would sit for a period of time and it wouldleak brake fluid. Furthermore, when lip seals are used ona Corvette with warped or out of spec rotors and orspindles, loose bearings or a Corvette that is drivenhard; they can actually suck air into the caliper fluidarea causing a loss of brake pedal! O-Ring seals vir-tually eliminate all of these lip seal problems. If GM doesn't use lip seal calipers anymore why areyou? Remove the caliper from the car, squeeze the pistons inward to removeexcess brake fluid from within the caliper. Please dispose of the brakefluid by taking it to your local recycling station.

Place the caliper in a vise to hold it steady. Using a flat bladed screw driver, pushthe tip under the metal ring of the dust boot as shown. Gently rotate or pry thescrew driver, this will pop the dust boot from its position. Do NOT let the tip of thescrew driver go into the cylinder wall area, it will damage and scratch the cylinderwall. Keep the tip just under the dust boot’s metal ring!

The caliper piston usuallypops right out after step2. Sometimes pulling upby hand is needed. If thepistons are stuck; Put theflat bladed screw driverinto the dust boot grooveon the piston and workthe piston outward. Becareful not the scratchthe cylinder wall. Dosteps 2 & 3 to all 4 pis-tons.

Remove the bleeder valve beingcareful not to break the bleederoff at the casting. If in doubt, usea hammer to tap the bleeder in-ward, this will loosen the bleederfrom the threads. “Tap” Not Ham-mer! Then try to loosen againwith the socket or closed end wrench. DO NOT use an openend wrench. If you absolutelyhave to use vise grips because awrench or socket will not grip thebleeder valve, USE Flat Jaw ViseGrip Brand only. The most com-mon bleeder wrench size is5/16”. IF you snap the bleeder off , THE PARTY IS OVER! DONOT use an EZ Out, it won’twork. Call a machine shop.

• TAp with a hammer if in

doubt. dO NOT HAMMER it!

While the caliper is in a vise, use a 13/16” ½” drive socket withbreaker bar to remove the 2 bridge bolts.

After unbolting the 2 halves, wash the caliper halves with soap simi-lar to Simple Green. If the soap is too harsh, the paint may lift orstain the Stainless steel sleeves in the bores. Rinse good! Using Hotwater will give better results.

After washing, blow all passage ways clear while blowing thecaliper halves dry with compressed air. Remember to USESAFETY GLASSES! You would be surprised how much stuffcan fly out to of the passage ways.

Next up is painting. If you want to show off your hard work, take the time. Remember, DO NOT PAINT inside the bores, bleeder valve holes or the mating surfaces of the 2 caliper halves.

After the paint dries, take time to inspect the bores for imperfections andscratches. Also, use a flash light to check to see that the passage ways are clear.Look for the obvious, like cracks around the bleeder valve area.

Piston to Wall Clearance is very important.Using a micrometer & I.D. Snap gauge or feeler gauges check these measurements:.0045” to .010” piston wall clearance. Take several measurements to get an average. Ifthe clearance does not fall between these sizes, the caliper is not rebuildable.

Use a small brush coatedwith brake fluid to lube theO-ring seal and it’sgroove on the piston.Then install the o-ring onthe piston.

Using both hands, rotate the o-ring on thepiston to make sure it is seated and nottwisted.

Install the springson the bottom ofeach piston.

This step should be done in avise for first Timers! Easilypush the piston into the bore.Yes, it will go right in!

First timers USE A Vise to hold the caliper half.!Place your tool over the top of the metal ring of thedust boot and hold the dust boot down with onehand and use a hammer to knock the boot intoplace. Knock! DO not Hammer. You only get a fewknocks. If you mess up and the boot will not stay inplace, flip the boot over and try again.

After installing the caliper half o-ring(s),place the inboard half onto the outboardhalf and install the 2 bridge bolts, using a13/16” socket, torque the bridge bolts to120- 140 ft lbs.

After installing all of the 4 pistons, place the caliperhalf o-ring into the cavity of the outboard caliper halfas it sits in a vise.

First timers USE A Vise to hold the caliperhalf.! Place your tool over the top of themetal ring of the dust boot and hold thedust boot down with one hand and use ahammer to knock the boot into place.Knock! DO not Hammer. You only get afew knocks. If you mess up and the bootwill not stay in place, flip the boot overand try again.

Do not forget to use a newinlet copper washer when in-stalling the new brake hose.2 Washers are suggested.Torque brake hose to caliperto 22 ft lbs. When installingthe front caliper on the vehi-cle, torque the 2 mountingbolts to 60-90 ft lbs.
