NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS DINNER
Make sure you make your reservation to help Catholic
Charities support those most in need in our
community through their 8th annual fundraiser feast
on Friday, October 2. Fr. Joe and John Bradac are
serving up delicious pasta, meatballs, and salad, with
desserts provided by P&C Fresh. Dinners will be
available for takeout between 5:30–7 p.m. from St.

no charge, but please bring your checkbook or credit
card so you can give generously. This is Catholic
Charities’ biggest fundraiser of the year, with a goal of
raising $20,000. Don’t think of your gift as the price of
dinner; think of it as a way to be part of serving low-
income and vulnerable neighbors in our community.
You must preorder your dinner(s) by September 30 at
https://tinyurl.com/CCPastaDinner or by calling 272-
5062, ext. 12.

Faith Formation Information

FAITH FORMATION FOR ADULTS
If you have ever enjoyed participating in a Movie
Night here at St. Catherine’s, or went to a Life and
Faith Session, or took part in a Bible Study or a study
of the Muslim faith, or participated in this summer’s
Science and Religion classes, or if any of this sounds
interesting to you, then you will want to register for
Adult Faith Formation here at St. Catherine’s. Why
are we having you register this year? The answers are
simple: (1) It will help us defray some of the cost of
our Zoom subscription for the year ($2,000); and (2) It
will help us know you better so that we can adapt our
offerings to your needs. The Adult Faith Enrichment
Committee is planning some of the Zoom sessions
that will be offered each month; other members of our
Adult Faith community will be providing sessions;
and we will be utilizing the best of what is offered
through various Catholic and Christian organizations.
When you register, you will receive the Online
Learning Playlist, where you will gain access to a
variety of activities and learning opportunities,
including group activities, individual activities,
service ideas, prayer resources, and more. The
playlists will be released on the 1st and 15th of the
month and will each focus on a specific theme.
Adults should go here to register: https://
tinyurl.com/StCatAdultFF. Fees for faith formation
can be paid through WeShare (https://
stcathofsiena.weshareonline.org/) or by sending a
check to the Parish Office. These links are available on
the parish website for the month of September. For
more information, contact Ann Marie at
[email protected] or 257-2493.
CREATOR, FATHER, GOD
Our Life and Faith Sessions are moving online. Please
join us for our first session, “Creator, Father, God,”
which will explore the very foundation of our faith—
a belief in God. Ann Marie Eckert will be the
presenter for this Zoom session, which will take place
from 10–11 a.m. on Sunday, October 4, and will be
recorded so that you can watch it anytime after. To
receive the Zoom link, you should consider
registering for Adult Faith Formation (https://
tinyurl.com/StCatAdultFF) or email Ann Marie at
[email protected] . Life and Faith sessions will
happen most Sundays from 10–11 a.m. and will be
recorded for later viewing. The following week,
October 11, our topic will be “Care of Creation,”
exploring how caring for creation is essential to the
fullness of faith and the Church’s mission.
VIRTUAL MOVIE NIGHT
Please join us for our next Virtual Movie Night on
Wednesday, September 30, at 7 p.m. to discuss the
movie War Room. It is available through streaming
services for $3. Watch the movie on your own, then
join our Zoom discussion to share your ideas,
questions, and thoughts from 7–8:30 p.m. You can find
the Zoom link on our website.

CHILDREN’S FAITH FORMATION
Our Faith Formation year will begin on October 1.
Families with children ages 3–grade 6 have three at-
home options for Faith Formation this year:
Option 1: Parish and Family Online Learning Playlists
(encouraged): You will be given access to a
bimonthly virtual learning playlist, which includes
activities for families to do together and for
children to learn independently.
Option 2: Faith Curriculum. You can use a more
traditional model where children complete a
chapter each week using a student book and home
lessons. The curriculum will be:
 PreK 3–Kindergarten: Short home-based
lessons that can be completed through
conversations. There are also placemats for each
lesson, which contain coloring sheets, activities,
and reflection questions.
Grades 1–6: Parents can request specific grade
-level student books for their children to have at
home. The children will then complete a
chapter a week and go online to complete a
review of the chapter.
Option 3: Hybrid. Families can complete activities
through the Online Learning Playlist and also
work on lessons through a more traditional
format.
Even though Faith Formation will be conducted
virtually, there will be gatherings for each grade level
each month.
The cost for the year will be $35 per family. This is a
one-time fee that will open up a year of adult, family,
youth, and child faith formation ideas, programs,
virtual gatherings, classes, and service programs. If
you have children who are seeking sacraments, or
choose Option 2 (Faith Curriculum), there will be
additional charges. You can register here: https://
tinyurl.com/stcatff20-21. Fees for faith formation and
youth ministry can be paid through WeShare
(https://stcathofsiena.weshareonline.org/) on our
parish website or by sending a check to the Parish
Office. More information is on our website.

Youth Faith Formation

YOUTH FAITH FORMATION
This year Middle and High School Youth Ministry
will look similar to the way they have in the past—
with the exception that we will be gathering virtually
twice a month. MSYM will continue with
Confirmation preparation and will use the Chosen
curriculum. HSYM will also gather virtually twice a
month and will be focusing on Catholic Social
Teaching. You can register your youth here: https://
tinyurl.com/stcatff20-21. The fee is $35, which can be
paid on our website through WeShare (https://
stcathofsiena.weshareonline.org/) or by sending a
check to the Parish Office.

C.A.S.E. TRAINING DATES
We will be offering virtual Creating a Safe
Environment (C.A.S.E.) training for anyone who will
be working with children or vulnerable adults (even
if you are working with them via Zoom) on the
following dates:
 Wednesday, October 21, 7–8:30 p.m.
 Thursday, February 18, 7–8:30 p.m.
 Thursday, March 18, 7–8:30 p.m.
More information about the trainings will be available
closer to the dates in the bulletin and on our website.

SCRAP COPPER NEEDED
A parishioner is looking for scrap copper (pipes, etc.)
to create a statue for St. Catherine’s. If you have any
you can donate, please bring it to the Parish Office or
call the office at 257-2493 to arrange pickup. Thank
you!
Volunteer and Advocacy Opportunities
GIFT CARD DONATIONS FOR FOOD
You might not realize that the Parish Office gets many
requests for grocery store gift cards from people
experiencing food insecurity. As the pandemic
continues, the requests are increasing, and our supply
of gift cards will begin to run low. If you would like to
help, please bring or mail grocery store gift cards
(Tops preferred) in increments of $25 to the Parish
Office, or put them in the Offering Boxes. You can
also send a check marked “Gift Cards” in the memo
section. Many thanks in advance for your generosity.

LOAVES AND FISHES NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
Loaves & Fishes has continued serving all in need
with free meals-to-go since the onset of the
Coronavirus crisis. Currently, they are preparing and
distributing 1,200 meals every week, nearly triple the
number served weekly since they suspended
community dining. Loaves has a pressing need for
new volunteers to help them feed the hungry during
these difficult times. COVID-19 safety protocols and
related volunteer criteria are followed to ensure the
well-being of volunteers and staff. If you are
interested in volunteering, please email
[email protected] .

40 DAYS FOR LIFE
From September 23 through November 1, you’re
invited to join other Christians for 40 Days for Life—
40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion.
You’re also invited to stand and peacefully pray
during a 40-day vigil in the public right-of-way
outside Planned Parenthood, 620 W. Seneca St., Ithaca,
and also to help spread the word about this important
community outreach. If you’d like more information,
especially if you’d like to volunteer to help, please
contact: Trish Burgess at [email protected] or Becky
Fluger at [email protected] .
THANK YOU FROM THE PASTORAL
COUNCIL
The Pastoral Council would like to thank the following
people:
 Hospitality ministers and cleaners.
The staff for everything they are doing during
the crisis—Sherry, Mary, Ann Marie, Jane for
the music ministry and livestreaming services.
 Volunteers who did livestream reflections.
 Our groundskeeper Craig—the grounds look
wonderful.
All the people who made crosses for the COVID
memorial.

St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church September 27, 2020
FROM THE BOOK OF ANN MARIE
Dear Parish Family,
Since so many of you are not yet able or ready to return to Mass, I thought I would let you
know about a few things that are happening and have happened here at St. Catherine’s.
None are earth-shaking, but each is meaningful to me.
Last Sunday some of the members of the Ithaca Peace Festival leadership team gathered to
honor the weekend that would have been the 10th annual Ithaca Peace Festival (and the
weather would have been perfect!). We gathered to honor the goals of the festival—peace-making, celebrating
diversity, bringing our community together. We also gathered because we enjoy the work we do together—
the meetings, the emails, the common purpose we are a part of. We celebrated those of you who have been on
the leadership team through the years and all those of you who put on the t-shirt and are a part of the team
that brings the festival to life each year. We are hopeful that we can do the festival again next year—but as
with all things right now, time will tell.
Last Sunday at the 9 a.m. Mass we blessed another 10 or so prayer shawls that have been made over the
summer. Our knitters and crocheters are providing such a beautiful, comforting ministry to our community.
Since the start of the pandemic, at least three or four dozen shawls and lap blankets have been shared with
people who are grieving, sick, or caring for others. Prayer shawl meetings have been happening occasionally
over Zoom, but they do miss the sounds of the needles clicking and the multiple conversations that usually
happen when they meet in person. If you are interested in providing blankets or shawls, please reach out to
Jeanne Luzzi at [email protected] .
The Pastoral Council started meeting again for the new year last week and they want to renew the phone
calling ministry that we initiated at the start of the pandemic. Many of you volunteered as callers, and those
of us who called parishioners had some great conversations and got to know some new people. The staff and
Pastoral Council are going to be reaching out again—to find out how you are doing and check in. So, if you
get a call from a number you don’t know, at least listen to the message and call us back if we were the ones
calling!
A number of you came back to church in the past few weeks, and it was lovely to see these “new” faces. It has
been over six months since the start of the pandemic, and in talking to you I learned that Emma, “the baby,” is
now over a year old, Annie just turned five, Irene really needed to be back at Mass (“watching from home just
isn’t the same”), Lisa did get the new car she so badly needed, and more. I have also had a few conversations
with people I didn’t previously know—college students from Buffalo (Go Bills!), a family of five who recently
arrived (what a hard time to meet people!), and a few families from neighboring states who are doing a close-
to-home vacation in our area. Mask-wearing and social distancing are essential—but it is still so important to
talk to people, catch up, say hello, and be welcoming. It has been fun to watch folks chatting in the parking lot
and trying to maintain community.
We have about fifteen people in our community who are working on making masks for the hundreds of kids
in the Ithaca school district whose families aren’t able to provide cloth masks for them. We are a part of a
community-wide effort to ensure that these children have the masks they need to attend school each day—
without the expense and perhaps the stigma of the paper masks that would need to be provided. People are
so generous with their time and expertise in these types of situations, and I am always happy when we can
make those connections between our parishioners and needs in the community. With that in mind, just a final
note to ask you to be as generous as possible to Catholic Charities through either your participation in the
Neighbors Helping Neighbors Pasta Dinner that is happening this Friday, October 2 (see page 4 to learn how
to make your reservation) or by making a donation to them (https://53718.thankyou4caring.org/). The work
they do in our community is so important!
If there are things that are happening that I haven’t mentioned, please reach out and share a story with me!
Peace,
Page 8

MINISTERS SCHEDULE FOR OCTOBER 34
OPENWIDEOURHEARTS: CATHOLICS STAND AGAINST RACISM
“Racism comes in many forms. It can be seen in deliberate, sinful acts. In recent times, we have seen bold
expressions of racism by some groups as well as individuals. The re-appearance of symbols of hatred, such as
nooses and swastikas in public spaces, is a tragic indicator of rising racial and ethnic animus. All too often,
Hispanic and African Americans face discrimination in hiring, housing, educational opportunities, and
incarceration. Racial profiling frequently targets Hispanics for selective immigration enforcement practices,
and African Americans for suspected criminal activity. There is also growing fear and harassment of persons
from majority Muslim countries. Extreme nationalist ideologies are feeding the American public discourse
with xenophobic rhetoric that instigates fear against foreigners, immigrants, and refugees. Finally, too often
racism comes in the form of the sin of omission, when individuals, communities, and even churches remain
silent and fail to act against racial injustice when it is encountered.”

St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church September 27, 2020
Greeting
Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And with your spirit.
Gloria
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of
good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we
glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord
God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus
Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of
the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy
on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our
prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have
mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are
the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the
Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Gospel Dialogue
Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And with your spirit.
Priest: A reading from the holy Gospel according to _____.
People: Glory to you, O Lord.
Profession of Faith (Apostles’ Creed)
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and
earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was
buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again
from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the
right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will
come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy
Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the
forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life
everlasting. Amen.
Invitation to Prayer
Priest: Pray, brethren ... acceptable to God, the almighty
Father.
People: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for
the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good
of all his holy Church.
Preface Dialogue
Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And with your spirit.
Priest: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them up to the Lord.
Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right and just.
Preface Acclamation
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are
full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who
comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
The Mystery of Faith
Priest: The mystery of faith.
People: We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your
Resurrection until you come again.
The Lord’s Prayer
People: Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy
name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is
in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us
our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Priest: ... and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
People: For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Sign of Peace
Priest: The peace of the Lord be with you always.
People: And with your spirit.
Invitation to Communion
Priest: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away
the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of
the Lamb.
All: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my
roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
Concluding Rites
Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And with your spirit.
Priest: Go in peace.
People: Thanks be to God.
PRAYERS AND RESPONSES WITHIN THE MASS
PRAYER OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most
Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I
desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at
this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least
spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were
already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never
permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
