9 Cool Things About
Nuketown in Black Ops
by Dan on November 13, 2010
Nuketown has become my favorite
multiplayer map inCall of Duty: Black
Ops, partly because of my appreciation
for 50s nuclear nostalgia, and partly
because I like tight, small maps. Butwhen I started talking about it with other
folks and asking internally, I learned a
lot more than I expected. With the help
of the community and some info straight
from Activisions Black Ops ProjectLead, Erik Melen, I came up with nine
clever details worth noting in Nuketown.
1. Double Rainbow, All The Way!
Lets get the obvious one out of the way
if you havent seen theoriginal
YouTube video (orthe brilliant
Autotune remix) of the guy who getsemotional after seeing one (well, two) of
natures little miracleswell, this is a
tribute to that. So intense!
2. And Now A Car From Our
Sponsors
And lets get the promotional one out ofthe way: The Jeeps markings (SOG
logo near drivers door, star on rear
panel) are the same ones youll find on
the 2011 Jeep Wrangler Call of Duty:
Black Ops Edition in real life.
3. Intersection of Oblivion
According to the street signs, the battle
tales place at Latchkey and
Trinity.Trinitywas the name of the very
first atomic bomb test, while OperationLatchkeywas a series of nuclear tests in
the late 60s. Its a little funnier if you
consider that youre not even playing at
an intersection of two roads its a
firefight on a dead-end street.
4. Permanent Residents
And who lives in Nuketown? Check the
mailboxes its your old pals Mason(in the teal house) and Woods (in the
yellow house). If I were you, Id knockfirst.
5. A Sparkling Census of Humor
The population counter on the Welcome
to Nuketown sign changes based on how
many people are currently on the map
check the top of this article and youll
see the small screen at the top shows 12,while this one shows 09. Whats more,
the sign sparkles, as do a few other
objects in this level (check the plates of
fruit on the kitchen table in Woods
house.)
6. Time to Go
Nuketowns clock tower is a little
unusual its a doomsday clock, and it
accurately counts down how much timeis left in the match. Of course, when it
hits zero, Nuketown earns its name.
7. RC-XD on the DL
Theres a bit of broken fence in eachback yard one hole next to Masons
fallout shelter and the other near Woods
shed. The openings are just large
enough for an RC-XD to fit through
try it. You can take your remote-controlled car for a little offroad joyride,
complete with ramp jump a part ofthe map where humans cannot tread.
Great for sneak attacks or just yelling
WHEEEE! (Also, keep your eyespeeled: Nuketown is not the only map
that features RC-XD shortcuts.)
8. Moving Mannequins
This ones just creepy. The mannequins
that populate Nuketown change everytime the level begins. For instance, over
at the swingset behind Woods house,

sometimes youve got a male standing
behind a female seated on the swing;
sometimes you get just one or the other.
Its the same everywhere else in the
level; the genders and placement of themannequins vary every time you play.
9. The Mannequin Surprise: A
Suburban Legend No More!
I heard about this one four days before
the game came out and I still cantdetermine if its true or not. Apparently
Treyarchs David Vonderhaar stated inan interviewthat if you shot all the heads
off the mannequins, you would witness a
surprise. Some people say you have toshoot them off in 60 seconds; some say
30. Some people said the secret was that
the nuke immediately went off; others
have said the mannequins spontaneously
generate firearms or turn into zombies, which then attack. All I know is that I
took my time when I shot all of them off
in Combat Training (even the ones
hiding in the school bus) and nothing
happened. I asked Erik and he wasntaware of there being anything special
about the mannequin heads, but then
again, maybe Treyarch truly slipped thiseaster egg in under the radar. If Von says
its true, I guess I have to believe itdespite my initial skepticism he
certainly knows more than I do but
until someone produces evidence of this
surprise, I am clueless as to what thatsurprise would actually be. I figure there
are now teams working around the clock
trying to get the first YouTube video up
and Ill gladly link to it when it
appears.
UPDATE: Thanks to NextGenTactics,we have a video of the surprise: If you
get everybody working together, The
Rolling Stones Sympathy for theDevil plays from unseen loudspeakers.
Thanks to Teh Dolla for the link:
Have you spotted anything Ive missed? The Treyarch school bus seemed so
obvious that I left it out, but Im still
wondering whose photo is on Masons
upstairs desk.
COD Black Ops Zombies: Eminem
Easter Egg Revealed
We have someexciting news to bringyou now, as it has been confirmed that
an Eminem song has been hidden inside
Call of Duty: Black Ops zombies as part
of one of many easter eggs included in
the game.
We were tipped off with the news a few
hours ago, and now we know its real
with a recent video that has appeared on
YouTube. When playing the secondzombie map, Five, simply find and
activate the three red telephones and
youll hear a complete version of
Eminems Wont Back Downsong over
the airwaves.
We knew that Eminem had been a bigpart of the games official soundtrack,
but to actually have one of his tracks
hidden inside zombie mode is awesome.
It is a shame that Treyarch picked WontBack Downthough, Till I collapsewould of been more appropriate for the
level, do you agree?
Escape your chair in the main
menu
What a cool concept. You don't just
play as secret soldier Alex Mason
during the game you play as him
in the menu screens as well. Still
strapped to the interrogation chair.
Still questioned by that mysterious
shadow. Still surrounded by
flickering monitors and dirty torture
equipment. You can look around all
you want, even down at your
imprisoned arms and legs, but you
can never escape.
Or can you? You can! Simply pull the
left and right triggers on your
controller, in quick and alternate
succession: LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT,
RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT,
RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT. Do it fast
enough and Mason will suddenly
break free of his restraints and stand
up, free to explore the room.

computer terminal tucked away in
the back corner. The game will
instruct you to hit a button, and voila
a really old, really clunky '60s-era
operating system!
Type out "HELP" for a basic idea of
what commands are possible in this
retro terminal. We'll walk you through
the documents and programs we've
found so far, but if you experiment
enough, you're bound to discover
something new. Also, if you own a
USB keyboard, we recommend
plugging it in now.
Unlock the Dead Ops Arcade
mode
You've played Nazi Zombies and,
after beating the campaign, you've
played Pentagon "Five" Zombies
with JFK, Castro, Nixon and
McNamara. But what about that third
missing option, currently blacked out
in the Zombie menu? What unlocks
that?
Simple. At the computer command
prompt, enter "DOA" to launch Dead
Ops Arcade, an old-school, top-
down, dual-stick shooter similar to
Robotron, Smash TV or Geometry
Wars only with armies of zombies,
remote control helicopters and an
evil space gorilla. It's fun, it's
surprisingly lengthy and best of all, it
supports co-op. After you've entered
the "DOA" code and played that first
time, Dead Ops Arcade will always
be available from the main menu.
BONUS: Finding this Easter egg
will earn you the Achievement /
Trophy "Insert Coin"
BONUS x2: Using the Speed
Boost power-up in Dead Ops
Arcade to kill 20 or more enemies
at once will earn you the
Achievement / Trophy "Easy

Play Zork
Yes, buried within one of this year's
most high-budget, cutting-edge,
action-packed explosion-thons is a
1980 text adventure in which you
solve puzzles, navigate mazes and
defeat trolls by typing at them. Zork I:
The Great Underground Empire is a
legendary milestone in the history of
gaming and, should you grow bored
of all the guns (or all the graphics) in
Black Ops, it is fully playable when
you type "ZORK" into the computer
terminal's command prompt.
BONUS: Finding this Easter egg
will earn you the Achievement /
Trophy "Eaten by a Grue"
Letters from your family
We're not done with the computer
yet. In addition to playing the Zork
and Dead Ops Arcade programs,
you can access a whole list of
documents hidden in the machine.Enter "DIR" to see a list of what's
available, then type "CAT" followed
by a space and the filename you
want. Most interesting to us were the
tragic series of letters from Alex
Mason's father and sister, which add
dimension to his personality and
background.
Hidden art and music
There are also .pic and .snd files that
can be accessed through the "DIR"
and "CAT" commands. The former
display concept art of missions and
characters, while the latter play
soundtrack music from the game.

No Russian? Well, maybe a little
The most famous line of dialogue in
any Call of Duty ever is spoken
by Modern Warfare 2's terrorist
villain, Vladimir Makarov, at the start
of the game's fourth mission. As an
elevator door slowly opens, and an
airport full of soon-to-be-slaughtered
travelers is horrifyingly revealed, he
reminds the player, "Remember, no
Russian."
Cut to the beginning of Black Ops'
fourth mission, in which another
undercover protagonist is about to
infiltrate a Soviet launch facility. As
he straps on his boots and pulls on
his mask, the character across from
him turns and says, "I hope your time
in Vorkuta helped your Russian,
Mason."
Coincidence? Or intentional
callback? We're going with the latter.
Mysterious objectives
SPOILER ALERT! By the final two
missions of Black Ops' campaign,
protagonist Alex Mason has gone a
bit coo-coo. He's paranoid, he's
violent, he's hallucinating and in a
clever breakthrough of the fourth
wall, the game transfers some of that
madness to the you, the player.
Pause during either the Revelations
or Redemption missions and you
won't see a real objective just more
of the numbers that have driven
Mason out of his mind.
Double Rainbow!
Above: So bright. So vivid
Oh my God, what does this mean?
Two intense, full on rainbows all the
way across the sky of Call of Duty:
Black Ops? Right in the front yard of
multiplayer map Nuketown? Oh
wow! Oh wow! WOO HOO HOO!
YEAH!
No, seriously, what does this Easter
egg mean? Well, probably just that
Treyarch's developers saw thesame
YouTube sensation that everyone
else saw back in July, then decided
to throw the internet meme into their
game. Now if only Hungrybear9562
were available as an avatar skin.
Also, see what's printed on the side
of the school bus?
Population: You
While admiring the double rainbow inNuketown, also be sure to check out
the "Welcome to Nuketown" sign.
Notice the population number? It
changes to match the number of
players in your match after all,
mannequins don't count as citizens,
and they're the only other ones
around.

Here's a challenge. According to
developer Treyarch, during an
interviewwith GameSpot editor (and
former GamesRadar intern) Shaun
McInnis:
"If you pop the heads off all the
[Nuketown] mannequins and I
mean all of them and I mean in
record-breaking time there's a little
something special for you. [It] takes
a well-coordinated team of people.
You're gonna need a full team of
professionals to make this happen."
So what's the reward? No one knows
yet. The most popular rumor in forum
threads is that a new zombie mode
is unlocked, but as of this article'sposting four days after the game's
release a video with proof has yet
to be uploaded anywhere. Which
means you could still be the first to
do so. If you succeed, let us know so
we can post a story on your glorious
triumph!
Movie reference: Apocalypse Now
Piloting a boat upriver into the
madness at the heart of war a
description of Francis Ford
Coppola's epochal film, Apocalypse
Now, or a description of the tenth
mission in Call of Duty: Black Ops?
Both! In this level, the game treats
players to a ton of imagery that
directly evokes the movie, including
the bridge at the last American
outpost, a burning Huey on the
riverbank, and a herd of water
buffalo. The soundtrack has aparallel, too, in the form of The
Rolling Stones. During the game,
you blast away at enemy defenses
while listening to Sympathy for the
Devil, while a scene from the film
features the crew blaring (I Cant
Get No) Satisfaction from the boats
radio.
Movie reference: The Deer Hunter
The Russian Roulette scene in
1978s The Deer Hunter is one of the
most famous and famously intense
pieces of human drama ever

American POWs during the Vietnam
War.
So when you and your buddy get
captured by the enemy in Black Ops'
version of Vietnam, how could the
developers possibly resist an
opportunity to pay homage? Watch

Return of the teddy bear

appearances by the toy, scattered
throughout the multiplayer and
campaigns of at least five different
games.
While we haven't spotted any during
the Black Ops missions yet we
definitely know they've returned.
Above is a bloody, ravaged teddy
bear from the Kino Der Toten
zombies mode. He can be found
right at the outset, on a balcony in
the first area. If and when you locate
more, let us know in the comments
section.
Return of the watermelon
Another mainstay in the Call of Duty
universe is the watermelon. Modern
Warfare required you to knife one of
these refreshing and delicious fruits
as a part of your training, while
Modern Warfare 2 featured an
exaggerated exploding variety. While
Call of Duty: Black Ops only has
regular watermelons, as far as wecan tell, it has a lot of them.
Seriously, count next time you play
through the campaign there are far
too many to be accidental.
Sexy man pile! (Actually dead)
Okay, this final Easter egg is odd, as
we're not even sure if it really exists.
While playing the Numbers mission
during the Black Ops review event
two weeks before the game's
release, we found this random stack
of corpses. They definitely weren't
enemies we had killed, and they
were tucked away in a forgotten
corner of the level.
When we tried locating them again
this week, however, they were gone!
Did Treyarch patch them out? And if
so, what is Treyarch trying to hide?

Hour Edit
The Teddy bear is an Easter egg in Call
of Duty: Finest Hour. In the level"Surrender At Aachen" (the thirdmission in the American campaign), go
through the door and kill the four
Germans. Then go to the area straight
from the door that the player came
through. There will be an MP-40 and ateddy bear here. Pick up the teddy bear
and the player will receive health and a
message stating "The Bear is adorable."

them, the player will get killed
eventually, sometimes he'll call the
player a traitor. This is the first major
use of teddy bears in the game, which is
nonetheless small. The teddy bear is alsoseen in many other missions, in semi-
hidden locations. They are seen in
"Downtown Assault", "The Silo" and
"Crossing the Rhine".
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Edit
Several teddy bears are also seen in Call
of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, in the levels"Blackout", "All Ghillied Up", "War
Pig", "The Bog", "Mile High Club",
"Heat", "One Shot, One Kill",
"Safehouse","Ultimatum", and"Aftermath". In Pripyat they were
presumably abandoned by children when
the city was evacuated in 1986 after the
Chernobyl disaster. In "Blackout" theplayer will see the teddy bear in anabandoned room just before finding
Nikolai. In "Heat" it can be found in a
drainage ditch. In "Mile High Club" it is
among the luggage on the floor. In
"Ultimatum" it is in the bottom floor ofthe building the player rescues Griggs
from. The teddy also appears in several
multiplayer maps; such as "Bloc",
"Ambush", "Overgrown", "Crossfire",
"Chinatown".
Call of Duty: World at War Edit
The teddy bear makes its first NaziZombies appearance in the map
"Verrckt". If a player happens to come
across a teddy bear from the mystery
box, a young child's laugh will be heard
and the box float to the ceiling beforevanishing to another location in a flash
of light, but when this happens the
player's points are returned to him/her.
The locations are marked by a pile of
rubble with a teddy bear on top of it. Onthe walls, writings such as "teddy is a
liar" appear in blood near the kitchen
and other places.
The teddy bear makes it's second
unwelcome appearance in "Shi NoNuma". Like in "Verrckt" its purpose is
to relocate the mystery box and frustrate
the players. A possible mystery box
location is marked by a few boxes with a
teddy bear on top of it. However, it'smuch easier to find the relocated
mystery box, as a beam of light shines
above the hut it is located in. Hence the
writing above the first mystery box
spawn point saying, "Look up to see the
light" then pointing to a drawn hut's
roof.
The teddy bear has unique cameos in the"Der Riese" map. In addition to the
mystery box, there is an alley in the
starting area where if not in splitscreen,
the player will see a shadow of a teddy
bear standing around the corner. There isalso a teddy bear holding the Bowie
knife on a rooftop looking down at the
player after the Fly Trap is activated,
along with another teddy bear in a cage
holding a bottle of Juggernog and theM1911 Pistol after going through the
Pack-a-Punch Machine.
When the teddy bear appears in the
mystery box, a young child's laugh is
heard (as well as a more demonic one)and the overvoice of the game says 'Bye
bye'. Rarely, the zombies start to laugh
because of the player's loss.
It is very possible that the laugh heard
when the player gets the teddy bear out
of the mystery box belongs to Samantha,Dr. Maxis' daughter (see Radio
messages/Der Riese). In one radio
message it is revealed that Samantha andDr. Maxis are trapped with a Hellhound
after Dr. Maxis ran an experiment onSamantha's dog Fluffy. It is possible that
Samantha is haunting the
zombie/Hellhound incidents as a result
of this. Likewise, it is possible that Dr.
Maxis haunts them and is the one whoplayers hear say "Fetch me their souls!"
to the dogs.
It may be possible that Samantha had a
teddy bear when she was murdered by
Edward and now she uses her teddy as a
conduit between her world and ours. Inthe Fly Trap sequence, when the player
starts it, there will be a little child's voice
that says "I want to play a game... let's
play, Hide and Seek!". The child's voiceis German, for when the child says
"Wow, you found another one," She
pronounces the word "Another" with a
German accent and says "Anozzer". She
also says many things, along with ademonic voice in the end when the
player finishes the game of hers and she
says, "you win, GAME OVER!".
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Edit
The teddy bear can also be seen brieflyin the first teaser trailer for Call of Duty:
Modern Warfare 2, released in 2009. A
few teddy bears can also be seen in themap Terminal near the boarding gate
onto the plane, if one walks into the shop
on the right and looks at a particular
shelf.
Teddy bears can be seen in manymultiplayer levels, in the level Favela
there is a teddy bear propped up on a
mattress in the red building that looks
out over the alleyway across from the icecream shop and on Highrise when the
player climbs to the top of the building
with the charlie flag for Domination in
it.. There is one in Afghan on the
mattresses below the cliff. There is one
in Carnival under the castle moat. Thereis one in Scrapyard under a manhole
cover easily open-able by grenades.
Campaign Edit
There is a teddy on the floor in the
airport by a dead man in "No Russian".
There is also a store filled with teddy
bears in "No Russian" along with a darkbrown bear with the same kind of design
but in smaller scale.
Destroying a specific TV in the level
"The Hornet's Nest" will reveal a teddy
bear hidden inside. Also in this level, going down a hidden alleyway blocked
by plants on the far right of the first area
entering this mission, will lead the
player to a Teddy Bear, a piece of paper
with a child drawing on it, and a Porter

Justice poster. There is a third teddy bear
on a back alley behind a building
towards the end of the level where the
player has to jump for the helicopter and
miss.
On the level "Exodus" there is a teddybear in the Arcadia fountain. It is also
seen in the 'panic room' of the VIP
secured by James Ramirez, on a chair
with a chess set in front of it, making it
likely that the VIP began to play chesswith it.
In the mission "Loose Ends" a teddy
bear can be found in a bathroom (in the
house where the player protects theDSM) with a knife in its head, stickinginto a wall.

Teddy bears in multiplayer are
considered signals of special areas that
are supposedly hard to get to, such as the
teddy bears on the roof of Highrise. Theamount of teddy bears depicted could be
an indicator of the more difficult places
to reach.
"Underpass" has one teddy bear on a
catwalk inside one of the warehouses.
In "Derail" there is a teddy bear in afiling cabinet inside one of the
warehouses. the player can see it if he
shoots or knifes the cabinet that contains
it (there are 3 cabinets lined up in a row
next to a computer desk with childish
drawings on the wall, the one on the
right has the bear).
There is also one hidden behind anexplosive barrel. Several sets of stairslead down to an indent in the rocks with
a locked door. Another is located
underneath the cliff, and blends in with
rocks. This is on the desert map,
"Afghan".
There is a teddy bear in the basement in
a tight space on "Estate", along with a
teddy bear in between a cabinet and a
dresser in the kitchen (room above
basement). Also, upstairs in thebathroom, behind the door there is a
teddy bear nailed to the wall.
In the multiplayer map "Favela", a teddy
bear can be found in one of the central
buildings in the main floor (the lower
floor is only a staircase leading to thehouse) on top of a mattress that is
leaning against a wall. This building is
the one across from the one with garden
on the roof.
In "Wasteland" in the tunnel system, andin a house next to the helicopter there is
a red poster. On the poster it says in
yellow writing 1945, in black ribbon 9,
and in red writing Mar with R written
backwards. On a poster hangingoverhead a man with glasses with a red
star badge. It looks like a star on the
teddy bears shoulder on that map.
Eight teddy bears are found on themultiplayer map "Highrise". The first 7
are found by jumping from the buildingonto the fallen lift near one of the
spawns. The lift acts like a ladder, and
after crossing a few ledges as well as a
tilted lift, the player can get to a spot on
the top of the map which hosts the seventeddy bears. The eighth teddy bear is in
the red building in the back. To reach it,
climb the ladder in the back and jump
from the top of the ladder to the black
platform in front of the player.

Kino der Toten and can appear in theMystery Box and moves it. It also can be

sitting above ammo crates.
Trivia EditThe teddy bear could be a
reference to how war is said to ruin
children's lives.
It also seems that Teddy bears areomens of bad luck. In Call of Duty 4:
Modern Warfare, they are found inChernobyl, which had a nuclear
meltdown. In Call of Duty: World at
War's Nazi Zombies, it moves themystery box. In Call of Duty: Modern
Warfare 2, one is found with the dead
VIP.
Teddy bears are believed to be in some
spots to show that those areas are
purposely accessible, and not glitches, such as the roof of Highrise.
The teddy bear in Loose Ends, has
many ironies behind it. As mentioned
above, it could be a sign of bad luck(Shepherd's betrayal). The knife in its
head could be a symbol of the manydeaths caused by Makarov or the many
deaths and MIAs of the Task Force 141
soldiers in the level. It being the first
teddy bear found with a knife in its head,
it could also be a symbol of Price andthe rest of the remaining members of TF
141 taking fate into their own hands and
going after Shepherd. Also the knife is
close to where the knife in Endgame hit
8/8/2019 9 Cool Things About Nuketown in Black Ops

Shepherd. Coincidentally, the teddy bear
marks a good camping spot for
protecting the intel.
Another theory is that the teddy bears
are a tribute to the 6 year old daughter of
an Infinity Ward employee who died ofcancer.
It has been said that where teddy bears
are, they are supposedly hidden areas,
but this has been disproven.
The roof on Highrise has an unusual
amount of teddy bears on it.
The Teddy Bear has a bigger role inWorld at War because of its appearance
in Nazi Zombies.
Teddy Bears are absent from the
campaign and multiplayer in World at
War.
In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Reflex all teddy bears are absent exceptfor one in Bloc, which is put next to a
crib, it could possibly be a joke.
It could also be a tribute to a baby who
died during the making of Call of Duty:
Finest Hour, which was already
attributed in the Ghostly Room. However this is uncertain.
