BY JUNE ALBRITTON CORRESPONDENT I t’s hard to believe that in 1997 there was a vacant lot on Claren- don Street between Chandler and Lawrence streets in the South End. After several months of working with Boston’s building commissions and when the South End Landmark District Commission approved plans, a developer obtained permis- sion to construct a four-unit condo- minium building on the lot. A certifi- cate of occupancy was issued Dec. 18, 1998. The building, located at 56 Claren- don, is handsome. Its Mansard roof, four-story height, recessed doorway and exterior bays fit well into the neighborhood. This four-bedroom parlor-level triplex is on one of the most exclusive and prettiest streets in the historic South End. “This home is just so beautiful- ly done, in every room, on every floor, down to the last detail,” said Paul Whaley of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, who has listed this home at $2.295 million. “This home was developed by one of Boston’s best-respected developers, Peter Georgantas, and the craftsman- ship and use of the finest in mate- rials throughout make this home extraordinary,” he said. Leafy Montgomery Street – around the corner from Hayes Park and steps to the South End’s finest restaurants and shops – is nearly all owner-occupied and is one of the most sought after addresses in the South End, Whaley said. In addition, the home offers garage parking for four cars in the rear of the build- ing. “This location is perfect,” said Whaley. “You’re close to every- thing, but [you’re] on a quiet, very residential side street with trees and gardens,” he said. Eleven-foot ceilings and light- filled, south-facing windows greet visitors to the open living and dining rooms, along with elegant wide-board mahogany floors and restored Victorian-era crown moldings. The living room boasts a mar- ble fireplace with a period wood- carved mirror and a bow window overlooking Montgomery Street. The room also has a ceiling medallion, recessed lighting and plantation shutters. The open dining room has plenty of archi- tectural interest of its own with marble-topped art alcoves with recessed lighting, crown mold- ing and the original and restored pocket doors with etched glass inlays. The gleaming mahogany floors continue into the stunning 19- by 13-foot chef’s kitchen.
