Dear Parishioners, Once again, we will begin another Lent. Lent is more con-cerned with deeds than with words, with actions than with beliefs – not because the inner life doesn't matter, but be-cause true character is best displayed in action. Lent directs us to reconcile with someone we are estranged from. It directs us to reach out, perhaps through Uncle Pe-te's Ministry, to the poor and once again renew our com-mitment to do our part to build up this community by giv-ing of our time and talents. You're good people, generous people, that can't be denied. The Season of Lent affirms the good and the holy in all God's people but also calls all of us to ever deeper conver-sion in order that the “Joy of the Gospel” becomes ever more real in our daily lives. I recognize the challenges that the church is experiencing as a result of the misconduct by priests and those in author-ity. This is coupled with the anger and sadness that people feel because of the need to close parishes and schools due to changing demographics, the declining number of priests, and the many who are disenchanted and have just walked away. Certainly as a result of the intense scrutiny the church has received over the last three years we are all very much aware of its many failures and weaknesses. Yes, Lent involves a good deal of complaining. It's healthy to vent, it's healthy to appropriately express feelings of an-ger and to seek justice when you are wronged, but as peo-ple of faith we must try to be problem solvers and not dwell on only the negative. I invite you to perhaps do some journaling this Lent. Jour-naling can be another great way to facilitate these discover-ies. Sometimes we have feelings and we're not sure where they came from. Allowing yourself some space and time to sit and organize your own thoughts can help you to self regulate your emotions and figure out how to express and work through them. Our Lenten theme: Easter Hope – Restorative Justice is an effort to move us forward. With prayers this Lent, Father Mike Meany

Drodzy Parafianie, Po raz kolejny rozpoczynamy okres Wielkiego Postu. Mike Meany

Dear Rev. Meany, Thank you so much for your parishion-ers’ holiday collection this past No-vember and December to benefit Marillac St. Vincent Family Services, and the 25 gifts specifically for the Senior Services Program. Your group’s efforts and generosity in sup-porting our program is an especially helpful and meaningful way of allow-ing us to fulfill our missions to strengthen, empower and give voice to those in need. Your staff’s enthusiastic support and commitment to MSV has helped us care for so many of Chicago’s most vulnerable individuals at a time of year when people feel acutely the pressure to provide. I wish you and the entire parish community a very Happy New Year, and continued blessings through-out 2020. Sincerely, Hilary Waldron Senior Services Program Manager Marillac St. Vincent Family Services

March 1—First Sunday of Lent: Lent is a call to “give alms for the poor.” Wherever you live in the parish, there are

poor families within walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are, in effect, ringing your doorbell.

Is there a family you know who needs assis-tance? Please call the Society of St.Vincent de Paul so that together we can help the suffering and poor.

Have you considered joining the Society of St. Vincent DePaul? Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent DePaul so that together we can help the suffering and poor.

Wielki Post to czas „dawania jałmużny ubogim”. Gdziekolwiek mieszkasz w parafii, wszędzie znajdują się ubogie rodziny. W razie potrzeby dzwonią do par-afii. W rzeczywistości dzwonią do naszych drzwi. Czy znasz rodzinę, która potrzebuje pomocy? Za-dzwońcie do Towarzystwa Świętego Wincentego a Paulo, abyśmy razem mogli pomóc potrzebującym. Wincentego a Paulo? Jeśli znasz rodzinę która potrzebuje pomocy prosze zadzwoń do naszego Stowarzyszenia St. Vincent de Paul. UNCLE PETE’S MINISTRY TO START SEASON VERY SOON! Uncle Pete’s Sack Dinner Ministry is about to kick off its 2020 season. This ministry continues to serve those less fortunate in the Chicagoland area by serving over 400 meals per month, provid-ed by the St. John Brebeuf Community. Some of the locations served include Deborah's Place,

Franciscan Shelter, Mother Theresa Sisters of Charity Soup Kitchen, St. Leonard, and Grace House. These places could use as many as 800 meals each month. Your involvement would be greatly appreciated … and it’s easy. On March 14 and 15, at all the weekend masses, brown bags and menu guidelines will be available at tables as you exit the church. You simp-ly need to fill the bags and return them to the front of church on the morning of Tuesday, March 24, between 5:45 AM and 9:00 AM. We need your help. Please consider being a part of this very worthwhile ministry. If you are interested in volunteering to distribute bags after the masses, please contact Dan Vonder Heide at 773.910.5536.
