IntroductionFor over 30 years Sonardynehave been pioneers in the use ofunderwater sound for navigation,

positioning and communications. In the worlds most challengingsubsea environments our solutionsdeliver accuracy and reliabilitygiving you the confidence to operatesuccessfully at any water depth.

Since the introduction of our firstdiver-based product in 1974, wehave been committed to developingreliable, easy to use and high

performance acoustic systems forRemotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs)and divers.

Applications for the Coastalproductrange are found withinthe oceanographic, search andsalvage, survey and marinearchaeology industries whererequirements vary from trackingtowfish and navigatingdiversthrough to conducting harbourinspections with ROVs andrelocating targets of special interest.

Sonardyne acoustic releasetransponders, for example, arean important component in theinventory of many scientificorganisations. The units are reliedupon for the recovery of valuabledata monitoring equipment thatin many cases have been deployed

    for several years.

As all of the products within theCoastal product range share thesame frequency band, users canbenefit from mixing-and-matching

components to suit their particularapplications. For example, an LRTcan be used as a simple releasetransponder or as part of aProspector positioning systemdepending on what topsideequipment is being used.

    Scout USBLSubsea Positioning System

IntroductionScout USBL is a complete vesselbased subsea positioning systemfor divers, ROVs and towfish.

Scout calculates the position of asubsea target by measuring therange and bearing from a vesselmounted transceiver to a smallacoustic transponder fitted to thetarget; a technique known as Ultra-Short BaseLine (USBL) positioning.USBL positioning is widely used bythe offshore and oceanographicindustries as it offers high accuracyperformance combined with ease

    of operation.

One of the main advantages of thetechnique is that no other in-wateracoustic equipment has to bedeployed before underwateroperations can commence. Onlythe targets being tracked need tobe equipped with a transponder. With Scout, a support boat canarrive on location and begin

tracking straight away. This hasparticular benefits for search andsalvage applications when searchtimes are critical.

    ProspectorWide Area, Absolute Positioning

IntroductionProspector uses a GPS calibratednetwork of low cost transpondersto provide high accuracy absolute

    positioning over a wide area.

Prospector can track one surfaceand one underwater mobile object, such as an ROV, diver, towfish orAutonomous Underwater Vehicle(AUV). This is combined withthe minimum of vessel mountedhardware and easy to use software.

    Key Features

Low cost system Quick to deploy

    Easy to calibrate

    Highly accurate

Some of the many tasks thatProspector can be used for include:underwater inspection, debrissearches, mapping, inshore

construction work, ordnanceclearance, marine salvageassessment, marine biologysurveysand marine archaeology.

This simplified acoustic systemis extremely easy to use andyet brings the inshore diver andROV operator the same advancedSonardyne technology used tosave time and money in mostof the worlds offshore oilfield

    developments.

Four acoustic transponders aredeployed on the seabed withsurface or sub-surface floats to forman underwater navigation networkwith each transponder beingdeployed at one corner of asquare. The positions of these fourtransponders are then calibratedby sailing the vessel briefly around

the square, typically in under20 minutes.

Once calibrated, the transponderarray may be used to position adiver or ROV. Since both the boatsposition and the divers or ROVs

position are known, referenced toDGPS data, Prospector can trackboth objects simultaneously to ahigh degree of accuracy, in waterdepths from less than five metresto 500 metres.

During tracking operations thepositions of both the boat andthe diver or ROV are shown ona chart display. The chart alsoshows the position of the four

transponders, any waypoints, position fixes or survey linesand can also show a backgroundchart. All of the tracking informationsuch as measurements andpositions are recorded for replay.

    ProspectorSystem Overview

    Remote Transducer

The remote transducer transmits andreceives acoustic signals. It is typicallyheld by a diver or floats free above him

    Prospector Transceiver

This is fitted to the divers backpack orROV. Cables connect it to the surfaceand remote transducer

System OverviewThe components of a Prospectorsystem are an acoustic transceiver,Surface Interface Unit (SIU), four

transponders and Windows-basedsoftware. All the equipment issupplied in a rugged case for easeof transport and storage. A computerand Global Positioning System(GPS) receiver are also required.

TransceiverThe transceiver is the electronicsmodule that is fitted to the diveror ROV. A connector on one endof the unit provides power and

communication to the SIU while theother connector is used to attach theacoustic transducer. The transduceris the part that actually transmitsand receives the acoustic signals.

The transceivers transducer sendsan acoustic interrogation signal toa transponder through the waterand receives an acoustic replysignal back from the transponder.By measuring the time between

sendingthe interrogation andreceiving the reply the transpondersdistance can be determined.

Surface Interface UnitThe SIU provides power anda communications link betweenthe transceiver and the computer

running the Prospector software. The SIU connects to the transceiverthrough a long cable fitted witha waterproof connector and thento a computer using a USB link.Four additional serial ports areincluded that can be used toconnect to external instruments.

TranspondersProspector is compatible witheither Coastal or LRT transponders

(see Pages 14 and 15). These canbe deployed in a maximum waterdepth of 500 metres and eithermounted in fixed seabed standsor supplied with release hooksfor easy recovery on the surface.

Computer and SoftwareThe computer running theProspector software connectsto the SIU using a serial

communications cable. Thesoftware on the computer talks tothe transceiver via the SIU sending

it commands to make it measureacoustic ranges to transponders.

The software also takes the rangemeasurements made by the

transceiver and calculates theposition of the transceiver fromthem. The boat, the transpondersand a chart of the working areacan be displayed on the computersmonitor.

Global Positioning System(GPS) ReceiverPositions from a Global PositioningSystem (GPS) receiver are usedwhen determining or calibrating

the positions of the transpondersjust after they have been deployed. The GPS receiver fitted to the boatprovides position measurements inreal-world co-ordinates. The GPSreceiver connects to the SIU via aserial port.

    HomerProDiver Based Target Relocation

IntroductionHomer-Pro enables divers to quicklyand easily relocate targets in lowand zero visibility from over 750

metres distance. By using smallacoustic transponders to mark pointsof special interest, for example, tools, wrecks and pipelines, a diver canswim directly to a location, therebyreducing wasted dive time.

    Key Features

    Small and lightweight

    Easy to use

Fast, simple target relocation ofpoints of interest: pipes, tools

Saves time and money on divingoperations

Compatible with Associationof Offshore Diving Contractors(AODC) transponders

Homer-Pro comprises of a diverheld relocation device and lowcost transponders which aredeployed at the target locations.

Each transponder has its ownunique address code, enablinga number of targets in a smallarea to be marked and relocatedunambiguously.

When the diver wishes to relocatean object fitted with a transponder,he switches on his handheld unitand selects the address of thetransponder he wishes to relocate.

The divers unit then sends out

an interrogation signal to thetransponder selected. If thetransponder is within acousticrange of the divers unit it willautomatically reply. From the replythe divers unit calculates thedistance in metres and directionto the transponder. The range anddirection information is displayedto the diver enabling him to beguided directly towards the object.

A diver changes the address of thetransponder he wishes to hometo by using a single push buttonswitch. To save time in switching

between targets, the divers unit canbe pre-programmed with only theaddresses of the transponders thatare likely to be encountered duringthe dive. The diver's unit containsa Ni-Cad battery which must becharged before diving.

Designed for commercial andamateur divers, Homer-Pro can alsobe used as a cost effective surveytool for accurately measuring

distances of up to 750 metres.

    ROVHomerLow Cost ROV Guidance

IntroductionROV-Homer is a miniature rangeand direction guidance systemfor small or large ROVs. Based

on proven acoustic principles,it is specifically designed for fast, efficient relocation of underwatertargets such as: aircraft blackboxes, lost diving bells, divers andseabed equipment.

It enables points of interest tobe marked with an acoustictransponder so that an ROV pilotcan be guided straight back tothe target even in zero visibility.

The system helps reduce searchtime and therefore operating costs.

    Key Features

    Low cost ROV guidance system

    Saves time and operating costs

    Allows operation in zero visibility

    Depth ratings to12,000 metres

    Critical point marking: tools,

    valve heads, pipelines

Emergency relocation: divingbells, flight recorders, ROVs...

The system consists of an ROVmounted range and directionunit, PC control software andtransponders which are attached

to the targets that need to berelocated.

Once the pilot has selected thetarget he wishes to home into, the ROV unit begins interrogatingthe designated transponder todetermineits range and direction.

This information is communicatedback to the surface, via the ROVsumbilical, and is displayed on theuser's PC. The software indicates

the range to the target and in whichdirection to turn in order to fly theROV directly towards the selectedtransponder.

The ROV mounted unit is accuratelyaligned with the ROVs headingsensor and is connected to sparecores on the ROVs umbilical orthrough the ROVs communicationsmultiplexer.

The electronics inside the unitincorporate power regulation,an RS232 interface and a micro-processor, all of which are

galvanically isolated from the ROVselectrical system. A 12 to 24V DCpower supply is connected via thesame connector. On smaller ROVswhich do not have communicationsmultiplexers, and therefore cannotsupport RS232, an RS485 interfacecan be provided.

The standard depth rating of theROV unit is 4,000 metres. Thisallows the system to be used with

either the 500 metre range oftransponders or the deeper rated

Type 7835 transponder which isalso depth rated to 4,000 metres. For ultra deep water applicationsa 12,000 metre titanium versionof the system is available.

    TranspondersCoastal, LRT, LAT and WSM

Coastal TransponderThe Coastal transponder has beendesigned for very low costapplications where size and weight

are important operational factors. Its the ideal choice for attachingto towfish, underwater structures, diving bells and instrumentationpackages so that they can be trackedor relocated using any of theCoastal tracking and relocationproduct range.

    Key Features

    Versatile, low cost transponder

    Depth rated to 500 metres

    Compact and rugged design

Alkaline battery packs giveup to 18 months listening life

    Compatible with AODCemergency channels

    Lightweight ReleaseTransponder (LRT)

The LRT is similar to a Coastaltransponder but incorporates

an acoustic release mechanismfor added flexibility. This allowsthe transponder to be deployedon the seabed with a sinker weightto hold it down and a buoy to keepit upright.

By sending a command from thesurface, the transponder releasesthe sinker weight and floats to thesurface for recovery.

    Key Features

    125kg Safe Working Load

    Depth rated to 500 metres

Up to 4 years listening life withlithium battery pack

    Thousands of secure identities

    Reliable, screw-off release

    Optional 75 metre rope canister

The unique design of the screw-offmechanism ensures a positiverelease action that overcomes anybiological growth.

Unlike similar low cost releasetransponders, the LRT has bothreceive and transmit functions, enabling accurate slant ranges tobe measured, release actuation tobe confirmed and position to bedetermined.

LRT Rope CanisterAn optional attachment for the LRTis a rope canister that allows items

left on the seabed, for example, tools, cables and salvage, to bequickly and easily hauled up.

It works by mooring one end ofthe rope to the item on the seabedand the other end to the LRT via theattached canister of rope. As thetransponder ascends to the surface, high strength rope is deployed fromthe canister. This line can then be

used to pull up the item directlyor retrieve heavier tag lines.

    Coastal Transponder

The Coastal transponder is a low costand versatile transponder suitable fora wide range of shallow water subseaapplications

    Lightweight Release
