EVANS HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT RECEIVES FUNDING
The Town of Evans Highway Department has been informed the Governor and the Legislature have reached an agreement on the consolidated Local Street and High-way Improvement Program (CHIPS) to a $75 million in-crease over the prior year’s funding. This increases the current Town of Evans appropriation from $117,147.41 to $149,043.61 - a $31,896.20 increase. The increase is partially due to a lobbying effort on the part of the New York State Highway Association of Town Superintendents of Highways and the Town Highway Superintendents Association of Erie County who, back in May of 2013 with other municipalities, traveled to Al-bany, NY for Advocacy Day to seek additional funding for road improvements. The calculations for how much each municipality receives is determined by the New York State Department of Transportation based on the to-tal road miles of each town. Towns with more road miles receive more funding than those with less town dedicated highway miles. The appropriations were designed as a supplement to town road programs and not as a substitute to reduce town highway budgets. Evans Highway Super-intendent Ed Michalski stated, “The additional payment and much needed funds will be used to complete the long overdue paving of Derby Road.”

TASTE OF EVANS A HUGE SUCCESS The huge success of the Taste of Evans held on July 14th was due in part to the collaborative planning among representatives of several community organizations and local businesses including the Town of Evans, the Evans-Brant Chamber of Commerce, the Boys and Girls Club, the Penny Saver, and Suzanne’s School of Dance. Two local non-profit organizations were part of the planning process that conducted two sporting events on July 14th in conjunction with the Taste: 3rd Annual Brian Galfo Me-morial 3-on-3 Tournament organized by Tony Pulvirenti and the family and friends of Fred Garrasi III First Annual Scholarship 5K Run. The basketball tournament ran all day from 9 am -5 pm. The 5K run started at 11:00 am with over 390 runners at the starting line. The Taste ran from 12-8 with music all day presented by the Nickel City Road Show who also provided games for children ages 5 through 14. Additional entertainment included dancers from Miss Suzanne’s Dance Studio under the direction of Jill Barrett as well as the Evans Idol contest organized by Cheri Ruben, sponsored by Lake Shore Community Players. Children enjoyed playing in the bounce houses throughout the day supplied by Bouncy Jumper. The Taste of Evans gave participants the opportunity to sample the delicious wares of local food vendors including Lake Shore European Trip Committee, Topical Ice, the Taste of Midway, Charlie’s Sugar Waffles, Coldstone Creamery, His Way Assembly of God Church, the American Legion, the Angola Women’s Moose Lodge, Desperados Restau-rant, Skully’s Restaurant, and Angola Volunteer Firemen.
A variety of crafters offered the participants a wide ar-ray of items for purchase including: Arbeiter’s hand-made jewelry and wooden benches, Don’s Airbrush Tat-toos, Perry’s Paparazzi Accessories & Jewelry, Ames’ and Carr’s Puppy Love Gifts, Baby Growth Charts, 31 Purses, Simply Charming, Munch’s Tie Dye Tee Shirts and Hand crafted Jewelry, Tupperware, First Congre-gational Church of Christ, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Il-lustrative Specialties, Rainy Day Creations, Democratic Club and Wildlife International, and Celebrating Home. A highlight of the day was the Basket Raffle where over 50 donations were made by local businesses. This event was organized by Chairperson Cindy Latimore and Co-Assistant Chairpersons Jill Feldmann and Diana Caffer-ty. Raffle sales were conducted by Gloria Hougle, Toni Pinter, Lori Szewczyk, Debi Wilson, Patti Latimore, and Sandy Brant. The raffle of a backyard patio entertainment set with grill by the Boys and Girls Club of Lakeshore was another highlight. The Town of Evans Parks Department insured the day ran smoothly by monitoring the electrical output and the cleanliness of the park the entire day. The health, safety, and security of the attendees were in the good hands and expertise of the Evans Town Police, and Lake Erie Volunteer Fire Company as well as the parking skills of the Evans Parks Department.

FRANKFURTER GERMAN BAND AT GAZEBO
On Wednesday, August 21, 2013, the ever popular Frankfurter German Band will appear at the Gazebo in Angola’s Centennial Park. The evening is sponsored by the Evans Bank that was founded in Angola in 1920 and their Evans Insurance Agency. The six member German band has appeared at the park for several years. Some have asked, “Why aren’t they the last band this season?” The answer is simple. They have a new Civil War era fife and drum unit that they had already booked a show on the last concert date in Angola which will now feature Judd Sunshine and the Boomers on August 28, 2013. The Frankfurters have toured throughout New York State, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Ontario and conducted a two week tour of Southern Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Lichtenstein several years ago. They play a variety of contemporary German music and feature thirteen foot long wooden Alp horns made in Germany and also have special presentations using a variety of animal bells and a singing saw. Refreshments are sold at the park by the Brant Evans Girl Scouts. The ice cream man continues to make a stop at the park each week. Handicapped parking is available off Center and High Streets for early arrivals. The rain location for all of the concerts will continue to the nearby New Angola Theatre on North Main Street. Bring a folding chair or a blanket and enjoy the evening.

Thank YouThank you to the family
and friends of John “Jack” and
Rose Marie DeMariaAfter fifty-seven years of marriage they were only separated by death for three short months (Jack 4/18/13 & Rose Marie 7/16/13). They are now reunited again. As time goes on, our hearts hold onto the memories of their kindness and generosity. Losing both parents/grandparents in such a very short period of time has been extremely difficult. The family of Jack and Rose Marie would like to express our deepest appreciation and gratitude during the past few months for all the “blessings”, “cards”, “prayers”, “food” and “friendship” received during this difficult time. A special “thank you” to Peter Chiavetta and the Brant-Farnham Ambulance/EMT staff for the many visits you made on our parent’s behalf. Thank you to the staff at Lakeshore Hospital/Nursing Home and to Randy and Scott Addison for your assistance during this period. A sincere thank you to everyone! I was recently reminded of a great story about twin brothers who grew up in the ghettos of Detroit, Michigan. Their father was a drug addict, a thief, he was never around for them, he was con-stantly in and out of jail and he caused terrible stress and physical pain in their household while they were young. These boys were interviewed as adults on a television news show. One brother was in jail and had turned out just like his father while the other had become a world-famous heart surgeon. They were both asked the following question sepa-rately, “Why do you believe you turned out the way you did?” Amazingly, they both answered the same exact way. They said, “With a father like I had, how else could I have turned out?” You see, one brother used the pain he experi-enced (as well as the suffering as a young man) to propel himself into better circumstances. He CHOSE to remember the PAIN, but he gave up the suffering and created the life he wanted. The other CHOSE to continue suffering and use the PAIN simply as an ex-cuse to not achieve anything in his life. Everyday in the office I see people who have done both over the course of their life when it comes to their health. Some experience the pain and choose to do something about it. Others ignore it, hope it goes away, and live a life with chronic pain and misery. Make it a priority today to not live with chronic pain, and choose to live an abundant pain-free life. Whether you are suffering from headaches, neck pain, lower back pain, sciatica, numbess in
Pain Happens; Suffering is Optionalarms or legs, sinus problems, or numerous other problems, there may be an answer for you. Everyone knows that health care costs are going up. A large per-centage of Americans no longer have health insurance and those who do have found that their benefits are reduced. Deductibles are ris-ing, and restrictive HMO’s are now common. That’s where my practice
comes in. I have found a way so that more people are able to afford the care they need, people with or without health insurance. A whole week of care in my office could cost what you’d pay for just one visit elsewhere. I have a SPECIAL OFFER for you! If you call our office and mention this ad by August 30th you will receive our ENTIRE NEW PATIENT EXAM (including consultation, computerized spinal analysis, and any necessary x-rays) for ONLY $27! You will be happy to know that further care is also very affordable with regular adjustments only $25. We also offer further discounts of up to 20% on multiple visit plans. Don’t

On Saturday, August 10th, 2013, the second Lakeshore Beach Soccer Tournament was held at Sunset Bay Beach Club to benefit Lakeshore Youth Soccer Association, Inc.(LYSA). About forty players registered for the tournament from as far away as Erie, Pennsylvania. All the teams were co-ed. The tournament was organized by LYSA, FC Buf-falo (our region's professional men's soccer team), Empire United Soccer Academy and Soccer Home LLC, a private soccer training company. Prizes included LYSA refrigera-tor magnet clips, Lakeshore soccer balls, Sunset Bay tee shirts, caps, and team pride. There was a great, fun atmo-sphere at the tournament, with beach music playing in the background throughout. The teams battled in beautiful, sunny weather through a Round Robin tournament. A fun time was had by all, and another Lakeshore Beach Soccer Tournament to benefit LYSA is planned for July, 2014, in Angola, NY. Continue to check www.lakeshorebeachsoc-cer.com for more information about location, youth and adult divisions, and registration.

CITIZEN SOLDIER FROM ANGOLA EXTENDS SERVICE TO STATE & NATION
Major General Patrick A. Murphy, the Adjutant Gen-eral, announces the recent reenlistment of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their continuing commitment to serve community, state and na-tion as part of the Army National Guard. Specialist Mark Mcmurray from Angola, N.Y., has re-enlisted to continue service with the Company A, 1-69th Infantry. "The New York Army National Guard has sustained our force at or above 100 percent strength for the better part of five years now," Murphy said. "Keeping those ready forc-es in our ranks mean that New York is ready to provide forces for state missions here at home, as we saw during Hurricane Sandy or for the federal missions supporting our nation around the country and around the world." "Each of our 16,000 men and women serving in the Army and Air National Guard as an important role and I'm pleased that so many continue to reenlist and remain part of our New York National Guard family." MPB ATHENS VBS A summer family event called “Athens: Paul’s Danger-ous Journey to Share the Truth” will be hosted at Most Precious Blood Parish Hall from Monday, August 19 to Friday, August 23. Families step back in time at Ath-ens, exploring some of the adventures the Apostle Paul faced. Each evening we begin with a shared dinner. Then kids and adults participate in a memorable Athens-style Marketplace, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, dig into Bible-times snacks, visit Paul, and collect Bible verses to remind them that God is always present to them and ready to help them live their lives more fully every day. Plus, everyone learns to look for evidence of God all around them through something called God Sight-ings. Each day concludes at Celebration - a time of upbeat worship that gets everyone involved. This year, Most Precious Blood is adding a special “adults only” option. A separate Bible Study group will be available during the evening for those who wish to study the missionary journey of Paul to Athens in greater depth. All materials, including a DVD lecture, discussion handouts, and Bibles will be provided. No previous Bible Study experience is required. All are welcome to join, and attendance for the sessions is not required. Athens will run from 6:00 p.m. (shared dinner) to 8:30 p.m. each day. For more information, call Theresa Walker at 549-1818.
