Hypertension—high blood pressure—is

frequently referred to as the “silent killer.”

Often its fi rst symptom may be a stroke, a

Campaign Targets High Blood Pressure

908-273-4300 | summitmedicalgroup.com 3

H igh blood pressure is called the silent killer because the first

symptom may be a heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure. One in three American adults has high blood pressure—also called hypertension—but fewer than half of those adults have it under control.

To raise awareness of the dangers of high blood pressure, Summit Medical Group has joined in a three-year nationwide campaign called Measure Up/Pressure Down™. The initiative was developed by the American Medical Group Association.

Enhancing community hEalth“Measure Up/Pressure Down is about

saving lives,” says Jamie Reedy, MD, the program’s lead physician at Summit Medical Group and a population health expert who studies the health outcomes of groups of people. “We know that if high blood pressure is treated properly, it will enhance the health of our community.”

Measure Up/Pressure Down encour-ages everyone to have his or her blood pressure measured by a health care provider at least once a year and aim for a reading of 140 over 90 or lower.

long-tERm haRm“You can’t feel high blood pressure, so it’s easy to ignore, but it can negatively impact your life in the long term,” says Ellen Lunenfeld, MD, FACP, FASN, co-chair of Measure Up/Pressure Down at Summit Medical Group and a nephrologist and hypertension special-ist. “Partner with your physician to keep your blood pressure under control.”

As part of the Measure Up/Pressure Down initiative, Summit Medical Group will boost awareness of high blood pressure to the public and staff mem-bers over the next few years. This will include lifestyle changes that Measure Up/Pressure Down promotes, such as:• Maintaining a normal weight• Exercising regularly, at least 30

minutes, three times a week• Following the DASH diet, a low-salt

eating plan (www.dashdiet.org)• Drinking alcohol only in moderation,

if you drink• Taking medications as prescribed

“We want to be proactive about identifying and treating individuals who have high blood pressure,” says Dr. Reedy. “By measuring, monitoring, and maintaining this condition, we can reduce its serious health complications.”

DIET MAKES A DIFFERENCE. Find out more about the role a healthy diet plays in managing blood pressure and browse our array of healthy recipes, all available at w w w.summitmedicalgroup.com/bp.

The Right Care at the Right Time

In healthcare, choice is a good thing. But sometimes it’shard to know where to go when you aren’t feeling well.At Summit Medical Group, we offer a variety of options

for minor health challenges. Which is best for you? Here’s a rundown:

SEEing youR PRimaRy PRoViDERYour primary care provider is the medical expert who knows you best. Your PCP will also oversee and manage your ongoing chronic health conditions—diabetes or hypertension, for example—and any intermittent minor medical concerns, like sore throats or urinary tract infections. Your PCP can also refer you to specialists or other resources if necessary.

Putting youR caRE on thE FaSt tRacKWhen you can’t see your PCP, Summit Medical Group’s innovative new Fast Track service offers same-day evaluation and treatment for minor health problems, including cough, fever, strep throat, back pain, headaches, bronchitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, sprains and strains, and more. Diagnostic and imaging capabilities, including X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, and laboratory testing, are available, with much shorter wait times than a hospital ED. Doctor’s Childhood Cancer Leads to a Life of Healing

The weapons to eradicate cancer—chemotherapy, radiation, surgery—

kill the disease but also sap the energy and challenge the spirit of patients and their families helped at Valerie Fund

centers.Seven Valerie Fund

Children’s Centers for Cancer and Blood Disor-ders in New Jersey, New York, and the Philadelphia area provide comprehen-sive, state-of-the-art outpatient health care.

After treatment and a return to normalcy, many will not remember or choose not to revisit this time in their lives when getting well was all-consuming. But for a select few, the experience will have sparked an interest and a desire to return to the hospital and heal others.

Dr. Genghis E. Niver, Hand and Upper Extremity Surgeon at Summit Medical Group’s Department of Ortho-paedic Surgery, was one of those patients who recovered from cancer and discovered his calling in medicine.

Perhaps it was the timing. When he was diagnosed, Dr. Niver was a 17-year-old senior at Westfi eld High School. Making plans for college

abruptly turned into formulating a plan to combat a highly aggressive form of B-cell Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

The mass was on the left side of his neck. Dr. Niver’s original ear, nose, and throat surgeon and two other Westfi eld High School students who also had cancer all recommended he continue treatment with Dr. Steven Halpern at The Valerie Fund Center at Overlook Medical Center. Fortunately, Dr. Niver’s cancer had not spread anywhere else, but he needed two rounds of chemotherapy, each lasting four days with three weeks off in between.

Dr. Niver recalls the treatment being very taxing on his body and thinking how lucky he was to be treated at the Valerie Center.

“My worries about the chemotherapy process, my absence from school, and what to expect in the future were all alleviated by the Valerie Center,” he remembers. From the binder the nurses prepared explaining every detail of the chemotherapy agents he was receiving to the home tutoring program which allowed him to complete his coursework on time and graduate, “every step was seamless, and really all I had to worry about was getting better and recovering my health.”

The Valerie Fund is a not-for-profi t organization established in memory of 9-year-old Valerie Goldstein by her parents. Its network of hospital-based facilities allows sick children to receive care close to their homes.

Dr. Niver later graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, then earned his medical degree at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, New Jersey Medical School, in Newark.

Sixteen years later, Dr. Niver’s own medical expertise only strengthens his belief that the Valerie Fund Center was the right place to receive his treatment. “Although many people feel that going to large academic centers in major cities may offer cutting-edge treatment, this is not always the case,” he observes. “The physicians at the Valerie Center are completely up-to-date on the latest protocols, and can provide compassion-ate care in a very private setting. I always felt like I mattered the most, which is very important to a patient undergoing cancer treatment.”

STEP UP. The Valerie Fund Walk and JAG Physical Therapy 5K run takes place on Saturday, June 14. To sign up or to learn more, visit www.thevaleriefund.org/Walk2014/index.php.

Program Addresses Concussions Head-On Publicity surrounding the long-term neurological harm

to National Football League players who have sustained concussions has focused public attention on the seriousness of mild traumatic brain injury.

To protect athletes from the dangers of single or multiple concussions, Summit Medical Group now offers a comprehen-sive Concussion Program, which includes the evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of concussions using the latest technology.

imPact haS an imPact on concuSSion REcoVERy One of the key components of the Concussion Program is ImPACT, a 20-minute computer-based test of memory, concentration, focus, and reaction time that assesses an individual’s normal cognitive function. Athletes have a baseline ImPACT test once a year. If they sustain a concus-sion, they undergo a follow-up ImPACT test about 48 to 72 hours later at Summit Medical Group to scientifi cally assess the condition of their brain. Comparing the baseline test with the post-concussion results allows Summit Medical Group to confi rm when an athlete’s brain has recovered completely.

“There is a large population of student athletes in our area and we want their families to know that if they sustain a concussion, our program will help to ensure that they receive quality care for the management of their head injury by trained experts,” says Timothy Dunne, PT, a physical therapist with Summit Medical Group.

Knowing how to properly monitor the gradual recovery from concussion and prevent subsequent head trauma can prove life-saving for children who play contact sports.

“Our concussion team can pinpoint when the brain has recovered, so young athletes don’t start playing their sport before they are ready,” says Jeffrey Rosenberg, MD, a Summit Medical Group primary care sports medicine physician and credentialed ImPACT consultant. “If a child who has had a concussion returns to his or her sport and has another concussion before they are truly healed, it can result in a coma or even death.”

Anyone in the community can benefi t from the Concussion Program and Summit Medical Group is working with community sports organizations, such as traveling clubs, to offer services for their middle school, junior high, and high school athletes.

“Our focus is to keep all young athletes who are passionate about their sport as safe as possible, so we are introducing our Concussion Program and the ImPACT test to parents, young athletes, and coaches in schools and town leagues in the area,” says Patrick Ritter, Summit Medical Group’s Manager, Ancillary Therapies, New Program Development, and New Practice Transitioning.

KEEPing young athlEtES hEalthy FoR a liFEtimEChildren and teen athletes play hard, so protecting their long-term health is the focus of the Concussion Program at Summit Medical Group.

“We have seen the adverse effects that repeated concussions have on NFL players and it is a lesson learned,” says Dunne.

“Our Concussion Program includes the proven tools we need to prevent that tragedy from happening to our kids, and we are proud to offer it to the young people in our community,” says Dr. Rosenberg.

BE PREPARED. To fi nd out more about the Concussion Program at Summit Medical Group, attend our August 28 lecture (see calendar) or call 908-277-8936.
