LAGRANGE COUNTY
Barn Quilt TrailBeauty. We all need a little of it to relax the body and restore the soul.
You’ll find exactly what you need when you experience the LaGrange County Barn Quilt Tour and view over 37 hand-painted murals, each one vibrantly unique, telling a story, and sharing a history.
As one of the largest of its kind in the U.S., you’ll see quilt patterns on barns and buildings that beckon us to a slower pace….
Recall stories from the past that helped to shape the person you are today….
Immerse yourself in the quiet tranquility of the idyllic Amish countryside.
The simple splendor will inspire you to breathe deeply and treasure the moment.
So grab this guide, forget about the clock, and enjoy the drive along the Amish Backroads of LaGrange County.
Art & beauty never felt so free.
About the Air Castles Mural
The Eash family believes this pattern represents a life of “balance,” as it mixes traditional elements and modern colors. They associated each kite with one family member. “The blue square represents the sky, along with the risks and adventure we often seek. The green smaller square represents the earth and the simple life we all have grown to love living here in LaGrange County.”—Vanessa Eash
About the Star of the Tatonka People Mural
“About 200 years ago the relationship between the bison and Native Americans was very sacred, and we wanted to pay tribute to that history. Being a part of a bison operation, we felt this pattern is very fitting to represent that special bond.”—Erica & Peter Cook, owners of Cook’s Bison Ranch
About the Indiana Puzzle Mural
Debate has surrounded the notion that this pattern originated in Indiana, and of course, most Hoosiers believe it did. The color scheme for the mural pays homage to the Amish community, whose clothing frequently is made from darker but varying shades of blue.
About the Crossed Canoes Mural
This pattern, where two canoe shapes crisscross between four squares painted burgundy and tan, is an obviously appropriate choice for Indiana’s second largest canoe livery, Trading Post, in Mongo. “This pattern is a natural fit for us. It celebrates the fact that we are a family-owned business where you can travel along a beautiful river and wildlife preserve.”—Jessica Senecal
About the Prough Farm
The barn where Mariner’s Compass and the Big Dipper murals are displayed is the only polygonal barn in Indiana constructed of material other than wood. Cement was hand-mixed each day and used to create the walls of the barn; while the concrete set, the boards were put in place. This process was both time and labor-intensive a hundred years ago without the use of machines or equipment.
About the Shoo Fly Mural
Susan Burger, who helps run the 2,800 acre farm, writes: “My daughter Sylvia grew up on the farm and spent a lot of time in the barn playing. When the flies would come around, she would swipe them off her arm and face and sing: ‘Shoo fly, don’t bother me, … ‘Cause I belong to somebody!’ She found a happy way to contend with those pests.”
About the F.B.I./Tingley Farm
Susan Berger, who helps run the 2,800 acre farm, writes that the family has maintained the “Tingley” name because not only is the farm a community landmark known by that title, but also because “if you are very quiet, you can still feel the presence of Mr. Tingley.”
Amish-run businesses… “Cottage businesses,” as we’ll call them. Feel free to visit and hear a story or two from the owners….
Inviting eateries… From ice cream to Amish dining, from ethnic Italian or Mexican fare to “Chicago-style hot dogs,” you’ll find what your palate—and stomach—are requesting.
