y The term intelligence is not defined easily. It is definedin various ways. It is used in attempts to evaluate and
measure actual or potential ability to perform selectedtasks by complex learning and thinking. In the popular
usage, the concept refers to variation in the ability tolearn, to get along in society, and to behave according
to social expectations.
y It is the capacity to understand the world, thinkrationally, and use resources effectively when faced
with challenges.

Howard Gardner (1993) developed his theory ofmultiple intelligences as a direct challenge to what hecalls the classical view of intelligence as a capacity for
logical reasoning. Gardner was struck by th
e variety ofadult roles in different cultures, roles that depend on avariety of skill and abilities yet are equally important tosuccessful functioning in those cultures. Hisobservations led him to conclude that there is no justone underlying mental capacity, or g, but a variety ofintelligences that work in combination.
