It seems IATA’s push for an all e-ticketworld from 01JUN is impacting on globalcarrier alliances, many of whom havemulti-flight passes. The new industrystandard for e-tickets has a 16-segmentlimit, less than that required for mostoneworld fares like Global Explorer, whichallows up to 20 segments.

No sooner said than …. Among the latestamendments to the QF/BA GlobalExplorer, oneworld Circle Trip Explorer, oneworld Explorer and oneworld CirclePacific fares are a reduction, effective01JUN08, to the maximum number ofsegments (including surface segs) to 16.

A week after the opening of Heathrow’sTerminal 5, BA is still trying to sort througha mountain of 19,000 bags using 400volunteers. Bags with Europe tags arebeing sent to Milan en masse for localsorting, and although flights are still beingcancelled, BA says it is now operating at92% capacity.

BA’s Monster MoveThe British Airways relocation to Heathrow’s new Terminal 5 last week was a monsterexercise and the biggest airport move in UK aviation history. Given the ongoing shamblessince T5 opened, perhaps too much planning went into the shift and not enough into whatwas to happen next.....During the five hours after 11pm on 26MAR, BA moved most of its equipment up to threemiles along the airport, entailing the closure of the southern runway while a convoy of morethan 1,000 vehicles and pieces of equipment was driven from Terminals 1 and 4 to Terminal 5.The convoy, involving 250 staff, included 27 shorthaul aircraft; 360 baggage trailers; 95baggage tugs; 106 baggage elevators and conveyors; 240 cargo containers; 122 cars andvans; 16 ground power units; 22 sets of aircraft steps, and 10 toilet servicing units.More than 2,500 Heathrow-based customer service and baggage staff also changed theterminal they work in. A further 3,000 staff are expected to move from Terminal 4 intoTerminal 5 on 30APR.Up to 13,000 Heathrow-based cabin crew and 2,800 pilots will move to a new crew reportingcentre within Terminal 5 from 01MAY.

Pierced Privates Process PullbackThe US Transportation Security Administration has officiallychanged its screening process, after reviewing the incidentinvolving a passenger being forced to remove her nipple ringsbefore she could board her flight in Lubbock, Texas. While confirming that the TSA staff had done the right thing ininsisting that the activation of the security screening alarmneeded to be resolved, the TSA now agrees the procedures needto be changed. In the future TSA will inform passengers that they have theoption to resolve the alarm through a visual inspection of thearticle in lieu of removing the item in question.

QF’s New-Age Body Screening TrialsThe Qantas Group commenced demonstrations of new-agesecurity screening technology at the Qantas Domestic Terminalin Melbourne this week. The ProVision Portal is an advanced passenger security-screening device that uses millimetre waves to scan the bodyand identify all objects concealed on or carried by a person.Qantas Group GM Security, Geoffrey Askew, said thedemonstration, although not part of the current securityscreening process, was intended to take the equipment into anairport for public consideration and comment.“Passengers are invited to view and test the equipment on avoluntary basis in order for Qantas to gain customer feedbackon this new technology,” he said.Mr Askew said that passengers would simply walk into the unitand stand in a designated spot for three seconds with arms raised, then leave the unit.“The millimetre waves used to generate the individual’s imageare not invasive or harmful. The image created simply resemblesan outline of the person and indicates the position of any foreignobject.“The face is unrecognisable and sensitive areas of the body areblurred. The security operative is the only person with accessto the image and that person is located away from the screeninglocation,” he said.“This is a major advancement on current technology and willeventually deliver significant improvements for security andthe efficient movement of passengers through airport terminals.“It is our intention to have this technology in active use at selectedQantas screening points in the not too distant future,” he said.

Ozjet Move Impacts on Kiwijet PlanKiwijet Airline Company CEO Patrick Weil has issued anotherof his lengthy press releases. In it he says he will now “waitand see” for six months before doing anything on starting adomestic airline here.He says Kiwijet had been in discussions with Ozjet over thepast four months to feed its planned services in PalmerstonNorth, utilising the airport as a small hub with direct connectionsto points north and south.Mr Weil says: “Our decision to delay launching operations isbased on several factors including the global economicslowdown, fuel cost, availability of qualified staff as well asthe addition of new routes from Pacific Blue, and the withdrawalof Ozjet from Palmerston North.”He goes on to say “We have secured funding that will carry usthrough December. All parties in our investor group have agreedto a “wait and see” approach to the project, and will continueto support the project.”Mr Weil also says he has pledged to senior directors of Virgin/Pacific Blue that Kiwijet will not enter markets that PacificBlue is developing, which includes possibly two new cities inthe south and two in the north. “We are committed to that pledge;and if there is a conflict with our plans we will work around them.”He says Kiwijet is also looking at developing a cargo operationto provide two Bae146-200QT jets for companies such as DHLand Fed Ex.

AKL Expansion Slowdown WelcomedThe Board of Airline Reps NZ (BARNZ) has welcomedAuckland Airport’s decision not to accelerate the next stage ofdevelopment at the international terminal. It believes the newly-opened Arrivals facility at AKL, if fully manned, is more than

adequate to meet forecasted demand.BARNZ says world economic uncertainty, the longhaul travelcarbon footprint issue, and emerging processing technologiesmean that it is timely to pause and assess the situation.Big airport developments are “extremely” expensive and needto be fully justified as their costs fall on airlines and travellers.

According to a report in The Australian, it isunderstood NSW Premier Morris Iemma offeredVirgin payroll tax concessions and a marketingpartnership to lure V Australia to base itself inSydney. In addition, he reportedly broughtSydney Airport into negotiations early to ensureV Australia would be given the terminal spaceneeded to operate its seven weekly return flights.

News Ltd reports that aviation analysts arecalculating a drop in earnings of A$200 millionfor Qantas once V Australia becomes fullyoperational on the SYD-LAX route. V Australia’scurrent return business class fare is quoted atA$9999, beating Qantas’s A$13,134 and United’sA$14,776. A Merrill Lynch analyst is also quotedas believing the flights, which he says will deliverA$100 million to Virgin Blue’s annual earnings, will also have a significant impact on Air NZ’sAust-NZ-USA business.

Aviation commentator Ben Sandilands, writingin the daily Crikey blog, says he believes the newAustralian PM’s keenness to sign open skiesdeals with all countries, in the national interestand that of the travelling public, will see a changein the dynamics of Australian internationalaviation beyond its current focus on thetraditional trunk routes to the UK, Europe andthe US.Such a signing with China, which he says is“qualifying” up to 28 million new internationaltravel-ready consumers each year, will seeChina’s carriers and their present and futureforeign partners catering to massive new traffic.

Work Begins on Franz Josef Rainforest Hotel

Building work has started on New Zealand’s newest purpose-built five-star hotel, at Franz Josef on the West Coast.Scenic Circle Hotels is developing the $26.5 million ‘RainforestHotel’ to expand accommodation capacity and options in theregion. One hundred rooms are included in the plans at thisstage, however this number may be expanded up to as many as160 depending on demand. The first stage of building includes all the public areas, includinga ‘tree level’ restaurant, plus the lobby areas and accommodationrooms. Three further accommodation blocks are included inthe stage two works. The first block should be completed aroundNOV08, with the remaining blocks expected to be finished byJAN09.Scenic Circle Hotels’ vision for the hotel is for guests to feelencircled by the natural rainforest, so care has been taken tominimise the impact of site clearing on the existing bush. Alandscape consultant has been engaged to assist with this andplan for replanting wherever possible.

In keeping with the hotel’s ‘rainforest’ theme, Scenic CircleHotels is specifying a focus on sustainability, with eco-friendly,sustainable and locally sourced materials being a priority. Inside, the hotel will have a natural, earthy ambience, enhanced by itsfive-star quality. The hotel development is a major boost for the West Coasttourism industry, which is hampered by a severe shortage ofaccommodation over the peak tourist season. The extreme seasonality of the West Coast tourism market, along with access issues into the remote region, makesinvestment of this level extremely difficult for most developersto justify, as average hotel occupancies are significantly lowerthan in other areas. However, having been established on the West Coast for morethan 20 years, Scenic Circle Hotels says it has the requiredinfrastructure (which importantly includes staffaccommodation) in place to make a new development like thisviable.
