The Chalice A publication of First Christian Church of Edmond, OKVol. 3 No. 31 August 25, 2011 CONNECTION This past Monday night a small group of members from the Compadres and Pioneers Sunday school classes joined me at Refuge Fellowship in downtown Oklahoma City. Refuge Fellowship is a church in formation, and it is being sponsored by a number of Disciples congregations in the metro area. Refuge is a church focused on reaching out to the homeless ofOklahoma City by providing them food for the journey – both physical and spiritual nourishment. Over the past few years, Refuge Fellowship has grown tremendously. This past week we served over 80 people, some of them 3 or 4 times! They have been meeting in the downtown library for dinner and worship, but have now outgrown their home. Beginning next week they move to a new location. This is an amazing ministry; just ask anyone who has gone to serve. It’s about more than just feeding the hungry – it’s about sharing life together. And when w e gather together for worship after the meal and hear the stories of those gathered, listen to their prayers, and join as one around the Lord’s Table, you understand what true Christian community is about. This amazing ministry began because the pastor, Noel Haley, saw a need and wanted to do something about it. She was willing to take a risk for the kingdom of God and step out on a limb to bear witness to the living Christ among us. She not o nly heard the words of Jesus to serve others, she believed them! And throug h that ri sk, lives are being transformed. We are called to “take a risk” for the Kingdom too! This summer we have discovered that one of our core values at First Christian Church is “Open Hands.” This core value embraces risk taking mission and service, and like Pastor Noel, we too must believe the words of Jesus when he says, “serve others just as I have serv ed you.” We must go into the world and be the hands of Christ! This Sunday we gather to celebrate “Open Hands” and recommit ourselves to being the hands of Christ in the wo rld. We have no choice but to go! Come, join us as we step out Join us this Sunday, August 28for the last message in our series... OPEN HANDS Risk-Taking Mission & Service Rev. Greg Bunton We Must Go By Rev. Greg Bunton, Associate Minister of Student Ministries on a limb to bear witness to the living Christ among us.

• 5:00-6:00 An Exploration of Faithled by Rev. Chris Shorow - Room 116 This will be an interesting experimental class. Many people have approached mewanting to discuss serious matters of faith, what they believe and what the Biblesays about some of these topics. So, I’m offering this course for them. We’ll startwith a broad overview of scripture and how it came about and what it means tous. How does scripture inform our faith? We will look at questions like—What isheaven? What is Hell? Why do bad things happen to good people? The next partof the course will be a dialogue where you will ask your own burning questionand we’ll explore it as a class. With a good look at scripture, our faith, and churchhistory, we will be able to more condently tell the story of our own faith.
