Modifications Address:• Requirements for the appointment of the Code Official and protection against

liability clarification.

• The definitions for appliance and equipment have been clarified to differentiate their function.

• Attics and under floor spaces used for the installation of appliances now must meet the IFGC access requirements for maintenance and replacement.

• Requirements prohibiting the installation of fuel gas piping in any vertical shaft used as an air duct or laundry chute have been clarified.

• No longer permits fuel gas piping to penetrate the foundation walls when piping is installed below grade.

Modifications Address:• The requirements for sediment traps have been revised to address their location

and design.

• Clarification of the shutoff valve location requirements. When a manifold piping configuration is installed, a new provision permits the shutoff valve to be located at the manifold and not greater than 50 feet from the appliance.

• Clarification on code provisions for clothes dryer ducts. Except where determined by the manufacturer’s installation instructions, the maximum prescribed length for gas dryer exhaust duct has increased from 25 feet to 35 feet.

• The maximum length for appliance connectors has increased from 3 feet to 6 feet.

Question regarding Flexible Piping….Change Summary:Connectors are now allowed to have an overall length up to 6 feet measured along the centerline of the connector. Only one connector can be used for each appliance.

Exception: Rigid metallic piping used to connect an appliance to the piping system can be permitted to have a total length greater than 6 feet, provided that the connecting pipe is sized as part of the piping system in accordance with Section 402 and the location of the appliance shutoff valve complies with Section 409.5.

Additions:• A new or revised construction permit is not required for projects where the

scope of work exceeds the 180-day limit in Section 106.4.4 and work is pursued in good faith.

• Now specifies installation requirements for piping that is sleeved and the sleeve is terminated outdoors or indoors.

• LP-Gas fuel gas systems assembled using metallic piping now require a dielectric fitting to electrically isolate the underground piping from aboveground pipe that enters into a building.

Reclaimed Rain and Gray Water Systems:

• The code now requires lines that convey non-potable water be identified by the color purple.

Change Significance: The Code change not only improves existing system identification, it considered the increase use of future non-potable systems due to conservation needs. Green and Sustainable Building rating systems encourage the use of rain or reclaimed water to be used in non-potable pipe systems for fixture flushing.

Illinois Plumbing Code vs. International Plumbing Code

Survey Says….Following Communities that have adopted both IPC and IPC:

International Plumbing Code Illinois State Plumbing CodeBolingbrook 2006 Current EditionNaperville 2006 2004Sugar Grove 2006 Current EditionOswego 2006 2004Plano 2006 Current Edition

These communities state that where there is a conflict in the regulations between the State Plumbing Code and the IPC, the most stringent shall apply.

Naperville and Bolingbrook proposes to address gray water systems when the State Code is updated. Plano has no gray water systems and Oswego does not currently allow them.
