I personally consider the Qualification in Internal Audit Leadership (QIAL) as the highest qualification in the internal auditing profession.
This qualification mainly aims to prove and demonstrate your skills as an experienced audit leader which is outside the domain of regular certifications. It also aims to test the understanding of a specific area of expertise.
I strongly believe that every CAEs should focus on supporting and helping their organizations by adopting and adapting the concept that “Auditors are strategic partners in their organizations”.
Since change is a constant scenario in today’s environment, CAEs need to be a new type of leader with innovation, drive and resilience.
My preparation for the QIAL?If you aim to obtain a qualification with a difference and be a leader in the internal audit field, you need to prepare for QIAL. I prepared myself
comprehensively. My journey to QIAL started by visiting the IIA website to understand the needed requirements.
The IPPF has an abundant source of information related to internal audit practices which you can review during your QIAL preparation.
The QIAL preparation consists of 3 areas. My advice to my fellow CAEs are:
1) Submission of required documents – Please ensure that all documentations are prepared and sent in accordance with IIA requirements, otherwise you need to go with the cases.
2) Presentation – During this session, you need to present an innovative idea that will serve the audit profession and you will have to convince the panel and present the idea in a holistic manner.
3) 90- Minute Panel Interview - Your solid experience and knowledge in internal auditing will help you to pass this section.
Why should a CAE take it?QIAL will definitely strengthen and enrich your career progression in the internal auditing discipline. It will also help to promote your commitment to leadership competencies by recognizing you as a trustworthy and responsible leader in internal auditing discipline. If you want to be a new type of leader, I encourage you to obtain QIAL because it is a bridge that will assist you to continue your journey in the internal auditing discipline.
