Help Your Pet Stay HydratedSummer temperatures and more
time outdoors increase our pets’chances of dehydration. Help your petsstay healthy and safe with thesehydration tips:
Provide clean water for your pets atall times, changing it frequently toensure freshness. Provide multiplewater bowls throughout your home toencourage pets to drink more often.
Watch your pets to make sure theyare drinking throughout the day and tolearn what their preferences are. Somepets like shallow bowls, while otherswould prefer to sip from their owner’sdrinking glass! Cats often enjoydrinking from running water, whichyou can provide for them with a waterfountain made especially for pets.
Canned food provides much morewater than dry kibble, so you may wantto offer some as a daily treat or switchover their diet to canned food only.Check with your veterinarian beforemaking any drastic diet changes.
On especially hot days, place an icecube or two in your pets’ water bowls. You can also freeze chicken or beefbroth in an ice cube tray and offer thecubes as a refreshing treat. Make surethe broth doesn’t contain ingredientsthat are toxic to pets, such as onionsor garlic.
Finally, be aware of the symptoms ofdehydration, which include dry tongueand gums; sunken, dull or dry eyes; lossof skin elasticity; and lethargy ordepression. Contact your vet right awayif your pets show any of these signs.
