Local Businessman is taking Ultimate Tannning to the top

Health Dept. teams up with Chamber to help with local health issues

Written by Ryan Bowen

A local businessman is taking his golden touch to restore the glow of a downtown tan-

ning salon that he’s investing heavily in.

Ryan Bowen has been a business owner in Tooele County for 16 years. Bowen is a successful entrepreneur. He also owns B&B Custom Painting, Bowen Investments, an investment company, and We Dump Your Junk, a cleaning and disposal company. He is also the sales manager of the most successful water company in Utah. He has taken that company from 15 employees to over 200.

While many businesses are scal-ing down during the poor economy, Bowen thrives on continually mov-ing forward. “I love businesses. I love to see them grow,” he said. “When the economy is bad, it makes me want to go out and buy business-es and help pull everyone up.”

Bowen bought Ultimate Tanning a month ago and has already made substantial improvements to the 12-year-old salon. “This is the first tanning salon in Tooele and we plan on it being the last,” said Bowen. He said the changes that he is making are based on customer feedback. “Our clients said they feel like fam-

ily when they come here with the environment and the friendly staff. People are also loving that we are centrally based in Tooele on Main Street and right next to Gold’s Gym.”

The idea to buy Ultimate Tanning came just a few months ago when Bowen was frustrated with the weak results he had been getting from other tanning salons in the area. One local tanning salon told Bowen that he was too big to use their free Gold’s Gym bed and that he must upgrade to a $15 bed, which he did and never saw results in three times.

The Tooele County Health Department (TCHD) is excited to

partner with the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce in addressing tobacco use in the workplace. They will be working together to conduct a survey of employees of Tooele County businesses. They will be distributing packets which contain surveys regarding to-bacco use in the workplace for employees to complete anony-mously. There is also a short survey for employers.

This is a unique opportunity for TCHD to gather informa-tion for demographics on the adult tobacco users in Tooele (which is information that they have never been able to collect before this opportunity arose.

The TCHD team working with Chamber staff will be picking up the completed pack-ets and surveys and then pass out gift cards to those busi-nesses to be used as an incen-tive drawing for employees who participate.

At Primary Children’s Medi-

cal Center, young patients and their families will have a safe, stress-free place to play as they receive cutting-edge, cus-tomized treatments thanks to a $12,183 donation by the We Promise Foundation – the charitable arm of Chartway Federal Credit Union and its divisions of Heri-tageWest, SouthWest Community and Utah Central.

Presented during the 27th Annual Prima-ry Children’s Miracle Network Telethon that took place June 5th and 6th, HeritageWest staff members were on-hand to announce some big news. “We have supported this

telethon for many, many years,” said Bruce Bryan, Regional President of HeritageWest Credit Union. “But we are honored to make an ever greater difference this year by funding a new outdoor Hope Garden where children and their families can enjoy some rest and our signature Utah sunshine during their hospital stay.”

The garden will fea-ture growing boxes that children will help plant, and an area for arts and crafts activities.

Because many of the children rely on IV’s and pumps to keep their bodies strong, the Hope Garden will also be equipped with electrical outlets so all children can benefit from the gift of therapeutic play.

In addition to this donation, employees of HeritageWest Credit Union manned tele-phone lines while viewers called in pledges from across the area as they watched live entertainment and heard inspiring stories of young patients whose lives had been changed because of the pediatric children’s hospital. “Helping these young heroes who have endured more than we could ever imagine is what our We Promise Founda-tion is all about,” asserted Bryan. “Their stories of hope are an example to us all, and we hope their future will be made brighter because of this special healing place.”

The hospital plans to open the outdoor center this fall.

one Tooele County business, we have found that smokers smoke less because of their workplace policy. Businesses can lose up to $3,383.00 per year due to higher health costs, lost workdays and time-off for smoke breaks. Smoking is a hard habit to break and we believe that employers can

help us to make a difference. If you are interested in having your business or workplace participate, please contact Debbie Winn, Chamber Executive director at 435-882-0690 or by email at [email protected]

brush tanning is for those who want to look tan without the exposure to UV rays. Airbrush tanning has been a huge success already at Ultimate Tanning. Other salons are carrying mist spraying which is spotty and stinky and who wants to look like an Oompa Loompa?

Another option offered at Bowen’s Ultimate Tanning is teeth whitening, which like tanning beds uses UV rays to assist in getting whiter teeth. Bowen said he is also working with Max Curry, who runs Elite Nutri-tion Center inside Gold’s Gym, their neighbor, so customers who come in for tanning can also get nutritional information. “We want everyone to achieve their goals,” Bowen said.

“Every customer is very important to us and we know you are what keeps us in business. We always encourage our clients to tell us their goals and we will work to achieve them together. We will be bringing in new features and want our clients to assist us to let us know what they want to see inside Ultimate Tan-ning. We are all in this together … one HUGE, happy Tooele County Family.

Ultimate Tanning is open Mon-

day through Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located right behind Jim’s Res-taurant, across the street from Gold’s Gym. We will be offering one FREE tan to every new customer. Come see us today.

Written by Chantell Spencer

You would think Spencer’s Arts was just another tattoo shop in Tooele, Utah, but Don

Spencer and his wife Chantell wanted their shop to be more than just another tattoo shop, so they decided to make it all about Dons passion for Art. This is how they came up with the shop name Spencer’s Arts instead of Spencer’s tattoos, because they offer more than tattoos, they offer art. Also, they made their shop family orientated by making each cli-ent feel welcomed and at home. Don always brings his clients thoughts

and imagination and creates one of a kind piece of art for each individual client.

Since Don was diagnosed with a chronic illness and almost lost his life in 2008, he and his wife moved back to Utah to be closer to family. Shortly after moving back his wife Chan-tell decided to open a tattoo shop up locally and fulfill his dream and achieve one of his goals. Don admits it’s been hard owning the tattoo shop and living with his illness, but he refuses to give up and let it control his life.

Don and his wife also state that since their opening in 2009, 2011 has

been their toughest year yet. Don had lost one of his biggest fans that took pride in his many talents since he was a kid, his dad Carl J Spencer passed away. Then June 15th of this year his shop was broken into, items were taken that were used to keep the shop running, but Don remains strong and refuses to throw the towel in. Don says “ he is here to stay.” Chan-tell states that “she is looking toward their 3rd Annual

Easter Raffle next year.” Spencer’s Arts will continue to always tried their best to give back to the com-munity and help out the troubled kids in need and also the families that are in need.

The Tooele County Cham-ber of Commerce is proud to introduce Corry Shields

with Macey’s Food & Drug as this month’s Employee of the Month.

Corry was nominated by Tooele Macey’s Leadership Team and this is what they had to say about him.

“Corry is such an amazing team member at Macey’s. His nickname at work is “the mayor” because he knows so many people in the community and greets each guest with a smile and a hello, and usually even greets them by name. Corry is very

amiable with other team mem-bers. He is willing to help out no matter what the task may be.
