Thursday, August 15, 2002-Apple Computer has decidedto make it easy for everyone to be honest, according to CNETNews.com. Beginning with the official introduction of OS X10.2 (Jaguar), the purchase of a $200 copy of OS X will per-mit the buyer to legally install Jaguar on up to five personalMacs. Yes, we know what you're thinking.

True, there is no technological barrier that prevents anyOS X purchaser from installing the software on more thanone machine. This has always been the case with Apple oper-ating systems, although Mac users are legally required topurchase a separate copy for each machine an operating sys-tem is installed on. "Huh?" you say? You say you've alwaysgotten an installation CD from your buddy or your sister orborrowed one from the office? Well, most of us have, andApple knows this. One doesn't encourage market share growthby making it difficult to break the license, after all. So what'sgoing on? Microsoft!

Microsoft is in the process of forcing everyone to pay foreach and every separate Windows installation. If you havethree PCs at home and want Windows XP on all of them, ourunderstanding is (and please let us know if we're mistaken)that three copies of the CD will be required. Apple knowsthat people pass installation CDs around. If they wanted toprevent this, they could. But by offering a $200 for 5 MacsOS X 10.2 license, they make it easy for consumers who wantto be strictly honest to upgrade all their computers economi-cally and put Apple squarely on the "good guy" side of thecontinuum opposite Microsoft.

Apple is "nice." Apple gives consumers the same breaksthat businesses get. Apple gives family discounts on OS X,whereas Microsoft does not with Windows. You can buy Applesoftware and no longer feel guilty for ignoring all the fineprint on the CD wrapper. People will buy this $200 versionof OS X because they want to be legal and support the goodguys. This is a psychological move, part of the branding pro-cess, rather than a pragmatic way to make more money. In away it's like giving consumers a way to make an offering togoodness...

Think about it: very clever, karmically clean, and greatpublicity to boot. It also gently reminds Mac users that oper-ating systems are intellectual property and will make at leasta few hesitate ever-so-briefly before loaning a friend that Jag-uar installation package. Very interesting, we say, and onlywonder if the people who thought this up know how clever itreally is.

The nation's largest Internet service provider has unveiledwhat America Online is calling its "best version for AppleMacintosh computers yet." The new AOL for Mac OS X iscompletely redesigned to look like a true Mac applicationand includes many new features, including some not yet inits PC counterpart. The new AOL Mac version integratesbrowser technology from AOL's Netscape unit instead of Mi-crosoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer.

AOL members on Macintosh computers won't have to lookhard to find major changes in the new AOL for Mac OS X.The top of the screen beams with colorful new icons, thebuttons glow, and translucent menus ensure that nothing im-portant is buried on the screen.

America Online is the only major Internet service providerthat offers a look-and-feel exclusively designed for Macs.AOL and Apple are a natural fit since both companies focuson the consumer, and are about making technology easy, ac-cessible and most of all fun.

The new AOL for Mac OS X delivers many new features, including some not yet included on AOL's Windows versionsuch as the ability to access saved web addresses from morethan one computer.
