  • 4Dairy products such as milk, yoghurt and cheese provide essential nutrition to the human diet. The protein, fat, vitamins and minerals found in dairy products support healthy growth and development in children while also supporting the nutritional needs of adults and supporting heart health, bone strength and healthy weight maintenance. Milk is also believed to help fight cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis while helping to meet daily requirements for human nourishment.

  • 3Dairy feed is a critical requirement for dairy producers and has a direct impact on milk production and quality. If grain, feed or forage containing aflatoxin B1 is consumed by dairy cattle, is it then converted to aflatoxin M1 through normal metabolic processes and is expressed in the milk at a rate of 1-2%. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies aflatoxin M1 as a Group 2B (or probable) carcinogen. Global regulatory limits for aflatoxin in milk and other dairy products range from 0.5 parts per billion (ppb) in the US to as low as 0.05 ppb for the EU, with even lower limits for food intended for children. VICAM offers rapid, on-site test kits and laboratory solutions that deliver the precise data required to ensure that dairy products are both nutritious and safe to consume.

  • 6AFLA M1-V PROCEDURE FOR RAW MILK

Set Up1. Turn on the Vertu reader by pressing the

center key hard. Using the arrow keys, move the curser to measure on the display, and then gently press the center key. You will then hear 3 beeps.

    2. Calibrate the Vertu reader daily by scanning in the bar code for the lot of strips being used. You will hear a beep when the bar code is accepted. Make sure the lot number displayed on the reader is the same lot number as the strips.

    3. Turn on the power for mini-incubator and pre-set temperature at 48 C. Let warm up for about 10 min until 48 C is on the display.

Sample Procedure1. Draw up 3-5 mL of cold (approximately

7 C) raw milk with syringe.

    2. Attach the filter to the end of the syringe. Push sample through syringe filter and collect enough milk to run the test in a strip test vial. Not all the milk may go through the filter.

    3. Add 250 L of filtered milk sample to the Afla M1-V diluent vial using a strip test pipettor* and mix well by vortexing 3 times for about 5 seconds each time.

    4. Place the Afla M1-V strip into the vial and place vial in mini-incubator for 12 minutes.

Reading the Developed Strip1. After 12 minute incubation, insert the

developed Afla M1-V strip into the Vertu reader drawer (test lines facing up with logo to the right) and close drawer.

    2. Press the center key on the reader to take a reading.

    3. To print the result, move the cursor to P in the upper left hand corner of the display using the arrow keys then press the center key.

    4. To run the next sample, move the cursor to NT using the arrow keys and press the center key. If you are using the same lot of strips, you are now ready to insert the next sample. If you are using a different lot of strips, you will need to scan in the new bar code.

    * Strip Test Pipettor Use

    1. Squeeze the top bulb of the pipettor.

    2. Draw up enough liquid to fill the barrel of the pipettor and have one or two drops of liquid spill over into the lower bulb.

    3. At this point the barrel of the pipettor should be completely full of liquid.

    4. To ensure accurate measurement, be careful not to let any liquid drip out of the pipettor before dispensing.

    5. Squeeze the upper bulb to dispense the liquid.

    6. Squeeze all of the liquid out of the barrel when dispensing.

    4

    Strip tests must be refrigerated. Store at 4 - 8 C (39 - 46 F).

Strip test should be at room temperature before use.

Use in accordance with VICAMs testing procedure. To be used for testing food products only. Not to be ingested or applied to the skin.

Notes1. When scanning in the bar code using the

bar code scanner, make sure the red + in the center of the bar code scanner is in the center of the bar code. You may need to move bar code scanner up and down to get to the correct position for scanning.

    2. Press the center key gently and quickly.
