CAN YOU RECOVER?

• It does not happen very often, but recently two of my customers had IBM Power Server hardware failures.

• Both had IBM Power9 servers at current OS releases• One had an HA/DR Solution• One was about to Go Live with an HA/DR Solution• What happened to them?

CUSTOMER WITH HA/DR SOLUTION

• Server failed with an SRC code indicating a Service Processor problem• After 30 minutes customer decided to fail over to the backup server• Production was up and running 30 minutes later• 1 hour of downtime, no lost data• Problem was eventually determined to be a known firmware problem;

customer was 2 levels down on firmware updates. • Server was IPL’ed. Firmware was updated. Role swap at a convenient time.• Backup server firmware was then updated.

CUSTOMER WITHOUT A HA/DR SOLUTION• Server failed hard. IBM could not determine problem. Replaced

motherboard and several other components. Server came back up, but with a double drive failure in a RAID set.

• Server failed on the afternoon of Thursday, 1/2/2020. IBM completed the repair on Saturday morning, 1/4/2020.

• Two technicians worked around the clock to restore the system from the last backup, 1/1/2020. Customer tested recovered system and was back up Monday morning.

• 4 day outage. ½ day of lost data, partially manually recovered. Billed for 2 consultants for 2 days for recovery.

CAN YOU RECOVER?

In both cases, the customer was able to recover. Note that both had gone through an HA/DR implementation project and were well positioned for recovery. One customer suffered downtime, lost data, lost revenue, lost $’s.If you have never recovered, how do you know if you will be able to?• Do you have up-to-date hardware, OS, firmware, application software?• How clean is your system?• Do you know how to recover?
