    Instructions

    Things Youll Need:

    Microsoft Vista

    Computer

    Step 1:

Create a new account for your children. Open the Control Panel, and then choose User Accounts and Family Safety. Now click on User Accounts. You will the

be presented with a list of the existing accounts on your computer.

    Step 2:

Choose Create a New Account, and then enter the name of your child. Click on the Standard account option to prevent your child from installing or uninstalling

important programs or changing the parental controls.

    Step 3:

Set the password for this account. Choose the account and then click on Create a Password. Type in your desired password. After doing this, only the person wh

knows the password can gain access to this account.

    Step 4:

Enable the Parental Controls. Choose the Set up Parental Controls. A warning message will then appear, prompting you to enter your administrator password fo

    access.

    Step 5:

Click on your child's recently established account. You will then be able to view the available Parental Control preferences for this account. By default, theParental Control option is off. Click On to activate it, and choose the Enforce Current option.

    Tips & Warnings

You can keep track of your child's computer activities through the activated Activity Reporting function. This function allows you to keep track of various deta

about your child's activity through their account. You are updated on what kind of games they have been playing, how long they stayed on the computer, and

what programs were they using, or if they attempted to do something that you have prevented them from doing.

Microsoft Vista's Parental Control also enables you to set limits to your child's computer usage. The Time Limits option in the Vista's Parental Control enables

you to choose the times your child can log in to the computer. When your child attempts to log in during a blocked time, Windows will deny them access.

Make sure that your child does not have access to your administrator password.

Parental Controls on Windows Vista are a great way to take charge of how your kiddoes use the computer. You can restrict time limitations, the ratings of games they are

allowed to play, block or allow specific programs, block or allow specific websites, and get activity reports on what they have been up to. While it might be nice to watch

over their shoulder at all times, it is nice to allow Vista to help enforce some of the rules you have laid out.

You may have noticed, however, that Parental Controls might be missing from the Control Panel where it lives:

Windows Vista Parental Controls are a consumer-oriented technology, so if you are running Windows Vista Enterprise or Business, this is expected behavior. If you are

using Windows Vista Ultimate, however, you will also encounter this behavior if your computer is joined to a domain.

Windows Vista Parental Controls is a Consumer-Only Technology

Windows Vista Parental Controls are not intended to be used with domain accounts. As a consumer technology, Parental Controls is not deployed in business SKUs of

Windows Vista. If a machine is joined to a domain, the Family Safety user interface links will be suppressed.

A mechanism will be provided to expose the functionality for the domain-joined case, but only non-domain user accounts may be configured with Parental Controls.

To enable Parental Controls on a domain-joined Windows Vista Ultimate installation:

    Start --> gpedit.msc

Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Parental Controls

Make Parental Controls control panel visible on a Domain

    2. How To Change Default Search Engine on IE.

Change Internet Explorer in Windows Vista to Search Google by Default

Windows Vista includes Internet Explorer 7, and on a new install it defaults to Microsoft's Live Search, which is just terrible. Here's the easy steps to make Google the

    default search engine instead.

First, open up Internet Explorer, and then click the little search dropdown:

You should see a page with Google Web Search on it:

Click Google as fast as you can!

Make sure you check the default search provider box. This will also work in IE7 on XP as well.

    3. Windows update setting change (start on every Saturday at 23:00 PM).

Configuring and Using Windows Update in Vista

When working with Windows Update it is important to remember that you must be either logged in as an administrator or have access to an administrator's login credentiain order to install any updates. With that said, to access Windows Update follow these steps:

    1. Click on the Start ( ) button.

    2. In the Start Menu Search Box (

type Windows Update and press enter on your keyboard

    3. A User Account Control prompt may appear asking if you

would like to continue. Click on the Continue button to

    proceed..

You will now be at the main Windows Update screen as shown in

    Figure 1 to the left.

    Figure 1. Windows Update Screen

From this screen you can configure how Vista will check and install

updates, check for new updates and Ultimate extras, display any

available updates or extras, manage them, and install them. In the

screen above, there are currently no new updates available. Your

Windows Update screen may be different depending on how you havWindows Update configured on your computer. For now, just follow

the steps in the tutorial regardless of whether or not you have updates

    available to install.

Your first goal is to make sure that you have Windows Update

configured in the most secure manner possible. To configure WindowUpdate please click on the Change settings option in the navigation b

on the left. You will now be at a screen where you will be able to set up how Windows Vista will download and install updates on your computer.

    Figure 2. Windows Update settings

Vista provides four different methods for how Windows Update will update your

computer. Below we explain each method and when it is the recommended setting.

Install updates automatically (recommended) - If you select this option then all

critical updates will be downloaded automatically and installed on your computer.

These updates will be installed at the time you specify in the fields labeled Install

new updates. This is the recommended option for the majority of people as itguarantees that you have all the critical updates automatically installed on your

    computer.

Download updates but let me choose whether to install them - If you select thisoption, Vista will download updates to your computer, but not install themautomatically. If you want to install the updates then you must install them manuall

You should only select this option if you have a reason for not installing updates

automatically. Only advanced users should use this option.

Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them - Ifyou select this option, you will be alerted when there are new updates available to

download and install. You can then choose to download and install the updates that

you wish. This option should really only be used by people who know exactly what

updates they need or those who have limited access to the Internet.

Never check for updates (not recommended) - If you select this option, Vista will never automatically check for updates. This option should never be selected as it puts

your computer at great risk to being compromised, infected, or hacked.

The last option under the Recommended updates category is the Includerecommended updates when downloading, installing, or notifying me about

updates option. If you select this option, which we recommend, then Windows Viswill also perform the same behavior that you selected above for Recommended

updates as well as Important updates.

When you are done configuring the options as you wish, press the OKbutton to savthese settings. You will now be back at the main Windows Update screen.

You may remember from Figure 1 that there were no updates available. As we wer

writing this tutorial, though, new updates had been downloaded to the computer an

    are now available to install.

When this happens, Windows Update will state that there are new updates as shown

in Figure 3 to the left.

    Figure 3. New updates available

As you can see from the screen above, the computer has 4 important updates, 18

optional updates, and 2 coveted Ultimate Extras available.

    6/40

To see what updates are available you can click on the View available updates button. You will now see a list of updates that are available to install on your computer.

    Figure 4. View available updates

Remember how I stated that the Important, or possibly Recommended, updates wo

be the only ones downloaded automatically. This is evident in the screen above as w

can see only the Important and Recommended updates are automatically checked o

    to be installed.

If you wish, though, you can now browse through the list of optional updates and p

a checkmark next to the ones you want installed. For the time being, let's not select

any of the additional Optional updates and instead press the Cancelbutton to get

    back to the main screen.

Windows Update, by default is configured to automatically download and install

critical updates at 3 am. If you do not want to wait till that time for the updates to

install, you can instead have Vista install the selected updates now.

To be safe, though, before installing updates you may want to perform a manual

check to see if there any new updates available to download. You can do this by

clicking on the Check for updates option in the left navigation bar. Windows Upd

will now connect to Microsoft's servers and check for any new updates as shown to

    the left

    Figure 5. Checking for update

Vista will check for new updates and if found, ask if you wish to download them.

If there are no new updates available, then you can go ahead and install the already

    selected ones.

If there are new updates, then you should view them and determine if they should bselected for install as well.

When you are ready you can click on the Install updates button to install the

    currently selected updates.

    Figure 6. Installing updates

As you can see Windows Vista is now installing the selected updates onto your

    computer.

Depending on the size and the amount of the updates, this can take a while. So sit

back and wait till the update is complete.

When it is complete you will be presented with a screen showing a summary of the

    installation.

    Figure 7. Update installation summary

  • 7/28/2019 70-620 Simulations by Lone Wolf [in Detail & Quick Steps]

    7/40

As you can see the updates were installed successfully and in order to finish the installation Vista needs to reboot the computer.

If you are prompted with this message, you should reboot the computer as requested by clicking on the Restart now button.

When your computer reboots, go back into the Windows Update screen. You will now see that Windows states that Windows is up to date.

Figure 8. Windows is up to date

What about the 18 Optional updates that have not been installed? It would be

annoying if every time we open up Windows Update we see this ever-increasing lis

of Optional updates that we do not wish to install.

We have either two options at this point. We can either install them or HIDE them!

Hiding updates is a new feature of the Vista Windows Update programs that allows

you to hide an update so that it is removed from the list. To hide updates just follow

these steps:1. Click on the View available updates option.

    2. When the list appears, double-click on an update to read its description

and make sure you do not want to install it. After reading the description

you should click on the Close button.

    3. If you do not want to see the update again, simply right click on the upd

and select the Hide update option.

    4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until all the Optional updates that you do not wish install are hidden.

    5. When done press the Cancel button to exit the Updates list screen and t

get back to the main Windows Update screen.

When hiding updates, it is recommended that you do not hide any Optional updates found in the Ultimate Extras category. These updates, even though they are optional,

tend to be ones that you want to install, as they are part of the reason you purchased Vista Ultimate in the first place. The tutorial will go over the Ultimate Extras later, so

    for now lets move on.

Now that you are back at the main Windows Update screen after hiding some updates, you may realize that you have a problem. It turns out that one of the Optional updatwould have been nice to install. Now that it is hidden, though, you can't install it. Luckily that's not true. Hiding the updates just cleans it up so that they are not shown as

available. These updates, though, are not actually removed from your system. To restore a previously hidden update you can click on the Restore hidden updates option

the left navigation menu. This will open a screen showing all the updates that have you have hid in the past.

    Figure 9. Restore hidden updates

To restore hidden updates just put a checkmark in the checkbox next to each update

that you would like to restore, and when ready, click on the Restorebutton.

The restored updates will now be visible in the main Windows Update screen so th

    you can install them.

This concludes the section on using Windows Update in Vista. To learn more

about Ultimate Extras, how to uninstall an update, and frequently asked

questions you can read the following sections.

Installing and Accessing the Windows Ultimate Extras

If your version of Windows Vista is Ultimate then you have access to new content and applications that are exclusive to Vista Ultimate, called Windows Ultimate Extras. These Extras are programs, services, and publications that are intended to enhance the enjoyment and functionality of Windows Vista Ultimate. It is important to note that

these programs are exclusive to Windows Vista Ultimate, so if you are not running that version then this entire section will not apply to you, not will you see any mention

Windows Extras when you use Vista.

The following are examples of the Windows Ultimate Extras that are currently available, or will be soon:

A new poker game called Windows Hold'em.

Use different Language Packs so that you can use multiple languages on the same PC.

Secure Online Key Backup allows you to store your Bitlocker password and certificate on Microsoft's servers so that they do not get lost.

A new tool called Bitlocker Drive Preparation Tool, which automates the configuring of your computer to use BitLocker toprotect your data with encryption

If there are Windows Ultimate Extras available that have not been installed on your computer, you will be able to see them in the Windows Update screen. If you rememb

from Figure 3, there were 2 Windows Ultimate Extras available to be installed. Since Vista treats Windows Ultimate Extras as Optional updates they will not be installed o

    download automatically.

Instead when there are Extras available, and you visit the Windows Update screen, you will see a box labeled There are Windows Ultimate Extras available for

download with information as to what Extras are available. To install these Extras you would first open up the Windows Update screen using the directions given in the

previous section. Once there, click on the View available extras option. This will open a screen listing the available updates, with the Windows Ultimate Extras being list

towards the bottom of the list.

Figure 10. Available Windows Ultimate Extras

As you can see, the screen states that the Hold Em Poker and BitLocker and EFS

Enhancements extras are available to install. To see a description of an extra, you ca

double-click on its entry in the list.

After reading the description, if you would like to install the Extra you would put a

checkmark in the checkbox next to it. Once you have selected all the Extras you wou

like to install, you would then click on the Install button.

After you click on the Install button, Vista will download the updates and install themIt is important to remember that you must be either logged in an administrator or ente

their logon information before Vista will allow you to install any Extras.

The one problem that I have found with Windows Ultimate Extras is that after you

install them you do not know where to find them. For example, Hold Em is installedinto the Games Start Menu folder, Secure Online Key Backup is found in the Extras

and Upgrades Start Menu folder, and Bitlocker is found in the System Tools Start

Menu folder. It would have been more user friendly to have one central location for a

installed Extras. Therefore, after you install an Extra, you may have to search around

the Start Menu in order to find how to launch it.

Uninstalling Windows Updates and Ultimate Extras

Just like you can uninstall a program that you install, you can also uninstall an upda

or Extra as well. You may be wondering why you would want to uninstall an updatif it's necessary to have it installed.

The reason is that, at times, updates are released that cause more problems on a

computer than they fix. When this happens you may want to uninstall the update un

a revised one is released in order to regain the functionality that the update degradeor breaks.

To see a list of the installed updates or Extras on your computer go back into

Windows Update and then click on the Installed Updates option in the lower left

hand corner. This will bring you to a screen showing all the installed updates andExtras on your computer.

Figure 11. Installed Updates ScreenUnfortunately Microsoft does not provide a method of seeing the description of the

installed updates or Extras in this screen. So if you are unsure what a particular entris for, your best bet is to search on the web for the text between the parenthesis.

For example if we search forKB928089, found in the first listed update, we find th

page:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928089, which explains what it is for.

When we have found the update that we wish to uninstall, we can do so by left clicking once on the update to select it, and then pressing the Uninstall button. For those w

like to use shortcuts, you can also just double-click on the entry. When you do so you will be presented with a prompt asking if you are sure you want to continue with the

    uninstall.

Change default OS at boot up

By default, Windows Vista is the OS you will boot up in if you decide not to push anything at the boot-selection screen. However, this setting is changeable for those who

would much rather have their earlier version of Windows become the default OS. You might be wondering why someone would want to do that? For instance, my brothera very hardcore gamer but unfortunately, there is no driver support for my video card on Vista. Because he uses this computer more often than I do, the default OS on this

particular PC is set to XP.

Now, lets modify the default OS to start at bootup. First, go to Start Menu, right click on my computer, and choose properties.

    Then, click on Advanced Settings.

Choose settings under Startup and Recovery.

And here we are. Click on the drop-down menu (highlighted in blue here) to select the default OS to be launched at startup.

Notice how you can set how long the boot-selection screen will stay up until it decides to load the default OS automatically. By default, it is set to 30 seconds, but mine ar

    10. Share folder problem

    >>> Create an exception on firewall + turn on file sharing

    http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-vista/share-a-folder-in-windows-vista/

    Introduction

Before you can share files in any folder you need to know a few basics. This guide gives you all the information you need to share any folder in Windows Vista.

    Prerequisites

Before you can share a folder you need to make sure a few things are set up.

Make sure all computers on the network are on the same workgroup. If you need help checking your workgroup see myChange the Workgroup Nameguide.

Make sure all the computers on your network have their network locations set to Private. For help with this see my Change the Network Location Typeguide.

Make sure Network Discovery is turned on. Changing your network location type to private does this by default but its always a good idea to double-check. If

you need help with this see myTurn Network Discovery Onguide.

Im assuming youre using the Windows Vista firewall. If youre using a 3rd party firewall you might have to change its settings to allow file sharing.

You need to decide if you want the shared folder(s) password protected or not. This guide shows you how to change this setting below.

    Using RSS Feeds

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, a two-way Web content distribution system based on feeds and readers. Websites offering RSS feedsfrom major news

organizations to personal blogsautomatically provide new and updated content that can be viewed with an RSS reader. RSS can give you an orderly and up-to-the-minu

listing of the exact Web information you want.

An RSS feed is an actual web page (e.g., rss.cnn.com/rss/cnn_topstories.rss) consisting of simple headlines and brief summaries of recently added or updated content (e.g.news stories, blog postings). Each item is linked to the full document at the main website. A website's RSS feeds range from general (e.g., CNN's top news stories) to

specific (e.g., Anderson Cooper's blog at CNN), and always include a link to subscribe to the feed.

Adding Sites to the Trusted Zone in Internet Explorer 6 and 7

PC users who regularly visit a group of safe pages can add these sites to the Trusted Zone while maintaining more stringent security for the rest of the Internet. This allowsActiveX and scripting to be available for the chosen sites but not for the Internet as a whole.

The solution is to add these sites to the Trusted zone, which will restore their functionality. The procedures described here will work for either IE 6 oe IE 7. Open Internet

Explorer and go to Tools-Internet Options-Security.

Click the "Security" tab and choose the "Trusted Sites" icon.

Then click on the button "Sites". A window will open, where you can add any sites that you wish to be in the Trusted zone. Be sure to remove the check by the entry"Require server verification (https:)...."

Enter the site of interest in the line provided. Site URLs can be typed in directly or entered by copying and pasting. A shortcut method of copying and pasting an URL from

the IE address bar is to use the keyboard command ALT+D to select the Web address and then use CTRL+C to copy it to the Windows Clipboard.

Then right-click in the space under "Add this Web site to the zone" and choose "Paste" from the context menu. The example below shows the NY Times site being added.

Note that it is not an https site and that the appropriate box is unchecked. After entering a site click the "Add" button.

The site is now added to the list of trusted sites.

Enter the next site and repeat the procedure.

There is a "Remove" button (grayed out in the figure above), should you wish to take a site off the list.

Using wild cardsOne disadvantage of using a complete URL like http://www.nytimes.com is that it can be too specific. For example, there are related addresses such as

http://topics.nytimes.com and these will be treated as a separate URL. To place anything contained within the entire domain "nytimes.com" into the trusted zone, the asteri

wildcard can be used. An entry such as "*.nytimes.com" will put everything in the main domain into the trusted zone.

Using Vista's Complete PC Backup utility

As you know, all of the previous Windows operating systems come with a backup utility to allow you to back up all the files on your hard disk. So too does Windows Vist

However, in addition to its standard backup utility, Windows Vista also comes with a hard disk imaging utility, called Complete PC Backup.

This utility can create an image file that contains the complete contents and structure of a hard disk. If you've ever used Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image, then you hav

a good idea of what Windows Vista's Complete PC Backup imaging utility is all about.Caveats

Keep in mind that that the type of backup that Complete PC Backup creates can not be used to restore single files -- it can only restore the entire hard disk. For that reason

Microsoft recommends that even though you use Complete PC Backup, you still use the standardbackuputility on a regular basis. Another thing to keep in mind is that

Complete PC Backup and Restore is not included with Windows Vista Home Basic or Windows Vista Home Premium.

    Accessing Complete PC Backup

There are two ways you can access the Complete PC Backup operation. You can access it from the Backup and Restore Center by clicking Start | All Programs |

Maintenance. You can also access it from the Backup Status and Configuration page by clicking Start | All Programs | Accessories | System tools. Both of these initial user

interfaces are shown in Figures A and B.

568MB, which comes out to about 9GB -- not a bad compression ratio.

    Restoring an image backup

To restore a hard disk using the image, you'll need to boot from the Windows Vista DVD. You'll then see two Install Windows screens and will select your language in thefirst and then select the Repair your computer option in the second. In addition to its standard file backup utility, Windows Vista's Complete PC Backup imaging utility is designed to allow you to create an image of an entire hard disk.

6 User Account Control Windows Vista Policies

This weeks BLOG will examine the 6 User Account Control (UAC) security policies that will be exposed in Windows Vista Beta2. For each policy a brief summary of th

configuration options and expected defaults for the home and enterprise desktops are provided.

    User type Taxonomy:

    1) Standard User: member of the users group

    http://blogs.msdn.com/uac/archive/2006/01/22/516066.aspxhttp://blogs.msdn.com/uac/archive/2006/01/22/516066.aspxhttp://blogs.msdn.com/uac/archive/2006/01/22/516066.aspx

    28/40

    2) Consent Admin: member of the local administrators group, who logs on with a filtered standard user but has the potential to elevate privilege to administrator.

-- Note: There are 14 different types of Consent Admins ranging from local administrator to restore operator.

The following is a screen shot of the Windows Vista Beta 2 UAC policies which are located in the Local Security Settings Microsoft Management Console (secpol.msc):

    1) User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators

    2) User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for standard users

    3) User Account Control: Elevate on application installs

    4) User Account Control: Run all users, including administrators, as standard users

    5) User Account Control: Validate signatures of executables that require elevation6) User Account Control: Virtualize file and registry write failures to per-user locations

    1) User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators

    Configuration options:

Prompt for consent: Default (home and enterprise): An operation that requires elevation of privilege will prompt the Consent Admin to select either Permit or Deny.

the Consent admin selects Permit the operation will continue with their highest available privilege. Prompt for consent removes the inconvenience of requiring that use

enter their name and password to perform a privilege task.

Prompt for credentials: An operation that requires elevation of privilege will prompt the Consent Admin to enter their user name and password. If the user enters valid

credentials the operation will continue with the applicable privilege.

No Prompt: This option allows the Consent Admin to perform an operation that requires elevation without consent or credentials. Note: this scenario should only be used

the most constrained environments -we will be blogging on this in the future.

    2) User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for standard user

    Configuration options:

Prompt for credentials: Default (home): An operation that requires elevation of privilege will prompt the user to enter an administrative user name and password. If the us

enters valid credentials the operation will continue with the applicable privilege.

No Prompt (Default for enterprise): This option results in an access denied error message being returned to the standard user when they try to perform an operation thatrequires elevation of privilege. Most enterprises running desktops as standard user will configure the No prompt policy to reduce help desk calls.

    3) User Account Control: Elevate on application installs

    Configuration options:

  • 7/28/2019 70-620 Simulations by Lone Wolf [in Detail & Quick Steps]

    29/40

Enabled: Default (home): Application installation packages that require an elevation of privilege to install will be heuristically detected and trigger the configured elevatio

    prompt UX.

Disabled: (Default for enterprise): Enterprises running standard users desktops that leverage delegated installation technologies like Group Policy Software Install (GPSI) SMS will disable this feature. In this case, installer detection is unnecessary and thus not required.

    4) User Account Control: Run all users, including administrators, as standard users

    Configuration options:

Enabled: Default (home and enterprise): This policy enables the Consent Admin user type while also enabling all other UAC policies. Changing this setting requires a

    system reboot.

Disabled: Disabling this policy disables the Consent Admin user type. Note: The security center will also notify that the overall security of the operating system has bee

reduced and gives the user the ability to self enable.

    5) User Account Control: Validate signatures of executables that require elevation

    Configuration options:

Disabled: Default (home and enterprise): This policy is disabled by default. Note: we will be blogging on this in the future.

Enabled: This policy will enforce PKI signature checks on any interactive application that requests elevation of privilege. Enterprise administrators can control the admin

application allowed list thru the population of certificates in the local computers Trusted Publisher Store.

    6) User Account Control: Virtualize file and registry write failures to per-user locations

    Configuration options:

  • 7/28/2019 70-620 Simulations by Lone Wolf [in Detail & Quick Steps]

    30/40

Enabled: Default (home and enterprise): This policy enables the redirection of legacy application write failures to defined locations in both the registry and file system. Th

feature mitigates those applications that historically ran as administrator and wrote runtime application data back to either %ProgramFiles%, %Windir%; %Windir%\system32 or HKLM\Software\....

Disabled: Virtualization facilitates the running of pre-Vista (legacy) applications that historically failed to run as Standard User. An administrator running only Windows

Vista compliant applications may choose to disable this feature as it is unnecessary.

information or DHCPv6 to obtain DNS server information. On the Advanced Settings pane, multiple addressess and gateway can be selected.

IPv6 parameters can also be set using the

netsh interface ipv6command. For example to set IPv6 address, the

    netsh interface ipv6 add address 5 2001:2000:4030::2

can be used. 4 is the interface index, which can be queried with

    netsh interface ipv6 show interface

command. Instead of the interface index, the interface name (such as "Local Area Connection") may be given.

    Vista applications

Internet Explorer 7 and Windows Mail (Outlook Express in Vista) supports IPv6, without further configuration. In IE7 it is possible to enter literal IPv6 addresses in the

address bar. Windows Mail uses IPv6 if the domain name for the servers resolvs to IPv6.

Working with network files when you are offline

    Applies to: Business, Enterprise, Ultimate.

Which edition of Windows Vista am I

    using?

You can access files stored in a networkfolder even when that network folder is unavailable. You can do this by making the folder available offline. When you make anetwork folder available offline, Windows copies all the files from that folder to your computer. These copies of network files that are stored on your computer are called

offline files. Windows automatically uses your offline files any time the network files are not available. This way you can keep working on the network files without

interruption, even if you lose your connection to the network folder. When you connect to the network folder again, Windows will automaticallysync the files on your

computer with the files in the network folder.

For more information, see Understanding offline files.
