Maybe cinema really did offer the 20th-century citizen a house in which to live. A house with modular walls and with a big window on which to cast one’s gaze. It is to this structure that Eugène Green’s fi lm refers. Fol-lowing the trail of Francesco Borromini, who travelled south from Canton Ticino to Rome to mark the Eternal City with his curves, La sapienza meditates on the meaning of architecture as the art of living.
Perhaps there is a direct link between journey and home, as though one could not be imagined without the other. It is no surprise that many of today’s fi lms tackle the theme of the journey, or more precisely, seek to tackle it in a different way. Songs from the North and Sud Eau Nord Déplacer are in this sense enlight-ened. Both deal with delocalization, the act by which the gaze does not travel but moves its centre. It is no coincidence that both focus on the Far East, the place from which this process of loss of orientation started.
Perhaps it is genre fi lm that has best recounted this obsessive link that connects humans to their home. Roman Polanski has turned this theme into a very personal art. Behind the appearance of the usual fi lm using the fi rst-person conceit, Creep updates this re-lationship, making a never truly discovered house the mirror of a disturbed personality.
Ventos de Agosto could be defi ned a fi lm stuck in one location, imprisoned in the beautiful natural setting that serves as its backdrop. The beach, the palm trees, the sea… Into this postcard, which Gabriel Mascaro explores with his documentary-maker’s skill, comes an external element, a traveller who will be lost among the waves one stormy night… Curiously this mysteri-ous character is played by the director himself.

Piazza Grande, Dancing Arabs, 7 | 8 | 2014 – 21:30

Eran Riklis, your latest fi lm arrives here in a crucial moment when the eyes of the World are pointing to Israel.
I want to make a very simple statement – everybody wants peace. Everybody. Even the prime minister wants it. Everybody living in the Middle East right now, the Jews, the Arabs, the Palestinians, and not just the people of Israel but also of all the other countries of that part of the World which have been affected by confl icts. In Arabic there is a word that expresses this concept – khalas. Enough, basta.
Can you tell me about the screening in Jerusalem ?
The fi lm was supposed to open the Jerusalem Film Festival, but they feared for security so it was post-poned. We ended up showing it to a small audience a week later, so technically

tonight it’s not a International Premiere, but for me it feels like one, as it is the fi rst time my fi lm is seen by such an international, and big audience.
Do you fear the fi lm will be only seen as political now?
I hope not. As artists, we are not commentators, we are involved observers. I believe that this is simply a story about how it is to be part of a minority surrounded by a majority, when you are asked to sacrifi ce a part of yourself in order to fi t in society. In that, it is a universal story, that could take place anywhere.
Why the title Dancing Arabs ?
It’s the dance of life. Can be a tango, can be a waltz. Nobody dances in the same way. Sometimes you’re alone on the dancefl oor, sometimes you’re surrounded by loving people.
The Piazza Grande has been very kind to you in the past. You won the Prix du Public UBS twice here. What are your fondest memories of Locarno ?
The fi rst time I came here was ten years ago, with The Syrian Bride. We knew we had a potential winner in our hands, but I will never forget what happened to me and the cast when we walked back from the Piazza Grande to the Grand Hotel after the screening. People sitting in the cafès along the way recognized the actors and started applauding as we passed. A standing ovation in the middle of the street, simply unbelievable ! Then, I remember that during the screening of The Human Resources Manager in 2010, right before the end, as in the fi lm it starts snowing, it started raining for real in the square. At fi rst I was worried about the rain, then I realized instead that something magical was taking place...

From the DDR’s fi lm industry to the move to the West to the jump to Hollywood: how does an actor’s craft change – if it changes – in the switch between such different contexts?
The biggest change, when I started working in Hollywood, was the switch from acting in German to acting in English. That was a powerful change. Otherwise, though, there aren’t big differences, because you always have to remain faithful to the simple principle by which an actor is truly great when he manages to be credible in everything he does. And that’s what I’ve always tried to do in all the different places where I’ve worked.
Looking at your fi lms, what stands out is the great versatility with which you’ve managed to portray characters in a wide range of registers, from comic (Night on Earth) to dramatic (Shine) to thriller (Eastern Promises) to science fi ction (Mission to Mars). And yet legend has it that you were kicked out of acting school…
Yes, I fl unked out of acting school. At the time I was 21 and had been studying music. The teachers were convinced that as an actor I was talented only at a theoretical level, not practical, and they advised me to go into politics. Something, by the way, I’ve never done and would never dream of doing. I never knew why they wanted me out. I think it was simply that by their standards I was not a model student, because I was averse to all those acting exercises they tried to indoctrinate us with, which I thought were absurd. But I didn’t let it infl uence me and I went ahead following my own path.
In the long list of major directors with whom you’ve worked, Rainer Werner Fassbinder occupies a special place. This was when you moved to West Germany at the age of 50. How did you meet him?
When I met Fassbinder for the fi rst time, I was still in East Germany and shooting a TV series. The fi rst thing he said to me was that he had already seen me in seven fi lms, and so he immediately offered me the lead role in Lola, to my great joy. He liked me as an actor and had a high opinion of me. And I realized this, by the way, from his clothing. Just one example: generally Fassbinder wore jeans and slightly scruffy clothes, but when it came to shooting my scenes, he showed up dressed to the nines. I have very happy memories of our times together: he was someone who gave his actors great freedom, and this, I think, is the highest virtue in a director.
From Fassbinder on, your artistic journey has been marked by a long series of other great auteurs: from Costa-Gavras to Andrzej Wajda, not to mention Jim Jarmusch, David Fincher, Steven Soderbergh, Ron Howard, David Cronenberg…
I had an excellent rapport with all these great directors you mention, partly because, as I said before, a good director is one who gives the actor the autonomy to do what he feels, following his own rhythm. The negative exceptions
came from other directors who were perhaps less expert and so threw all their uncertainties on top of you. They wanted phrases to have more emphasis or other silly things like that, but just because they were very insecure.
Out of the many fi lms in which you’ve starred, if you had to choose, is there one you feel particularly attached to?
I never watch my fi lms more than once, so I’m fond of all those that I remember, while I immediately forget those I’m not attached to. Now, if I really have to choose, I’d say a pair of fi lms: Avalon by Barry Levinson and Music Box by Costa-Gavras. I fi lmed them in parallel over the same year. In the fi rst I was the head of a Jewish family, in the second a war criminal: two roles that could not have been more different. It was a truly unforgettable experience. I felt like a kind of Mephistopheles.

Retrospettiva

“South Water North Displace” is the direct translation of “Nan Shui Bei Diao”, a pro-gram of colossal dimensions currently un-derway in China, aiming at deviating the waters of the Yangtze river to irrigate the Northern, drier regions of the country, and in particular the capital city of Beijing.
A seeming evident case of human delu-sions of grandeur, the project would seem insane to most people, and was indeed postponed for fifty years until a collusion of political powers allowed its launch in 2002. Since then, the machine has been unstop-pable: riverbeds have been dug, populations displaced, and opponents silenced.
Why reforest deserts while deforesting vast areas in order to re-house villagers made homeless by the Nan Shui Bei Diao? “Why not?” leaders would answer, fixated on the idea that mankind should exert its control over nature. In Antoine Boutet’s gorgeously shot film, this Icarian defiance is thorou-ghly questioned, and one of its fascinating speakers undertook an actual on field exa-mination of the titanic enterprise, equipped with a set composed simply of a backpack, a tent and a good measure of curiosity. In a similarly open-minded and extensive ap-proach, the filmmaker composed a com-plete and dizzying picture of the mammoth project and its even more immense impact, allowing both its workers and victims to spe-ak. But it is the latter whose soaring chorus of distress resounds the loudest, in one of the film’s most unforgettable scenes.
When the counter-powers of a younger, more connected generation are evoked, an earlier scene of the film is recalled: the image of an astonishing man, singing. Fa-cing injustice with a ‘cold eye’ is how this glorious mind survived 19 years of absurd imprisonment. United, men like him might be able to overturn things, despite their op-ponent’s tremendous head-start.

Where other recent fi lmic works on North Korea have satirized the more absurd fac-ets of the country’s jingoistic propaganda, American-based, South Korean-born di-rector Soon-mi YOO takes North Korean popular culture – its patriotic songs, plays and now-notorious fi lm industry – at face value. In her debut feature, the essay fi lm Songs from the North, she seeks to ex-plore the roots and ramifi cations of the political psychology of an insular nation that persists in relating to its leader as a child does to his or her father. (This is a country where even the karaoke songs are about the Great Leader’s love.) In the line of essay fi lms from the like of Chris Marker and Andrei Ujica, Songs from the North interweaves poorly dubbed footage from North Korean television, news reports and big-screen cinematic epics with material shot by YOO on the ground, accomplished with a deft touch that resists privileging one form above the others.
Over three trips to North Korea from 2010-12, the director discovered a lonely country obsessed with the dangers of re-unifi cation, living constantly under the burden of nationalistic myths, forged from the mid-20th-century legacy of armed struggle and colonial suffering. But she also found people of all ages living with dignity and expressing genuine emotion in public, with respect to their nation’s suf-fering. (The litany of bawling children as broadcast in a televised play, well, you can judge for yourselves.) Of course, she was restricted as to what and where she could fi lm, and thus supplemented this foot-age with the aforementioned examples of popular culture, especially the songs, that help in a way to give meaning to the fl eet-ing glimpses we are given of the day-to-day life in the hermit state, and perhaps explain what gives a modicum of warmth to the North Korean heart.

Africa: Earth Wind & FireOpen Doors
Angola, Botswana, Cape Verde, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Ni-geria, São Tomé and Príncipe, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zim-babwe. The countries that make up English- and Portuguese-speaking sub-Saharan Af-rica, so close and yet so different. This is the new challenge for Open Doors, and its new director Ananda Scepka, who emphasizes “the strength of the diversity of their fi lm industries, but also their production styles. Bringing together these countries is impor-tant – for them, but also for us”. Out of 190 projects, 12 have been chosen. Universal is-sues are joined by more glocal topics, from migrants to colonialism and post-colonial-ism, and genre themes, often complicated by beliefs that, for example, can lead a child to be accused of being a witch.
Open Doors comes to this edition, and the complex, ambitious area chosen, strong from its success in 2012, when it focused on French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa. Of those projects, 75% are already on the go. Two fi lms have been completed, six are in an advanced production phase and one is
just about to start fi lming. This represents an important acceleration compared to the past, perhaps due to the dynamic nature of new African fi lm.
With the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, this section of the Festival del fi lm Locarno, as always, wants to open up the right paths to directors and fi lms from countries in the global south and east, strengthening their fragile independent fi lm industries. And since last year, this has been done not only by facilitating meetings between possible co-production partners, but by becoming a professional platform for creative cul-tural and structural exchange. For exam-ple, the ateliers: one dedicated to writing, with selected tutors for four projects on which work has already started before the festival, the best of which will be chosen to participate in this year’s Torino Film Lab; another on funding and distribution, offer-ing a group case study, open to profession-als who can register for the day, and which will include a British speaker talking about the new ways of getting these fi lms seen; and fi nally a “pitch training” on meetings
with possible co-producers. This is a co-production workshop that is never content with simply putting people in contact, but wants to construct comprehensive skills of the highest level, including for the public. Hence why the Open Doors Screenings pro-gramme ranges from the fi rst generation of post-independence African fi lm to the modern era, from Ruy Guerra’s 1979 Mue-da, Memória e Massacre to the unpreju-diced genre fi lm Teza by Haile Gerima, shot 30 years later. The many guests include Ramadan Suleman and Kwaw Ansah. This section offers a snapshot of the cinema of the future, of projects. “In our research we have come across a generation of young people who are defi nitely skilled at fi nding new production routes for escaping from isolation”, says Scepka. Open Doors is this: a highway leading to the future, to a bet-ter, possible cinema, which also, and most importantly, involves the world’s margins. In 2015, three of the section’s projects will be brought to the Producers Network at the Cannes Film Market.

Look into My Eyes “Hypnotic” is the best word to describe Favula, the latest work from director Raúl Perrone, which comes with a recommendation from none other than Api-chatpong Weerasethakul – though he used the more Joe-like epithet, “bliss.” So-mewhat of a secret outside of his native Argentina, Perrone has made more than 30 movies, and in recent years has reinvented his cinema, by looking back to the past, and in doing so pointing to the future. Standing apart from any other film made this year, with its magical handmade aesthetic, Favula recalls Méliès, or si-lent Fritz Lang, but at the same time evokes recent silent, stage-bound aesthetics like Raya Martin’s Independencia. Loosely based on an African fable, and shot employing rear-projections techniques, Favula’s simple events take place mostly in an isolated house and a nearby jungle: a marginal family’s life is interrupted by the arrival of a teenaged girl. On top of the minimalist, pulsating images, Per-rone layers a maximalist soundtrack that encompasses both the sounds of the jungle and non-diegetic music (indelible contemporary songs that appeared in his last work, the cumbia punk opera P3ND3JO5). The result is a wholly unique, mythical universe of danger, passion and magic.

Il primo è Dong nuan (The Winter, 1969).
to, forse anche troppo…

One should look beyond cinema’s history to understand that – while it is true that El espíritu de la colmena (1973) was formed in an inhospitable national context (even now it’s looking so anomalous and splendid as the “egg yolk” silk that Fernando Fernán Gómez unveils to the little Ana Torrent) – in reality is a well covered work according to a Spanish melancholic tendency about the quest of human identity, abandoned by gods, which en-compasses from the mystical Spanish Golden Age to the literary Generation of 1898.
Although Víctor Erice’s feature existes within the Iberico art as a masterpiece of youth work, only a few warn that, paradoxically, it also constitues the swan song and testament of the feeling of this group of poets and thinkers; those who imagined before him the landscapes of Castile as a perfect crepuscular territory for meditation and fi ction: Antonio Machado, Azorín, or Miguel de Unamuno.
The cinematographer and his scriptwriter Ángel Fernández-Santos (the greatest of the Spanish cinema) reinterprete the lands of Castile and the blanding glare, that bathe them, by their cinematographic sediment to reveal a sublime territory Monument Valley in southern Europe.

Mark Henley è lì, a immortalare quelle ore nervose.

You are a very young, passionate fi lmmaker. Fine. You have a great location like the Festival del fi lm Locarno. Perfect. And a story. Good. A great story. Even better. But only one frame to tell it. Oh...
This is the challenge of One-frame movie, a creative lab open to thirty girls and boys aged between 10 and 14 years who will have to show off their creativi-ty, developing the ability to enclose their movie visions in a single picture taken with a smartphone. The initiative – organized by the Scuola universitaria profes-sionale della Svizzera italiana (SUPSI) – will include small seminars and atelier activities which will be held from August 12th to August 14th on two sessions: one in the morning (9 to 12) and one in the afternoon (13.30 to 16.30); one of the main objectives is also to sensitise youngsters about audiovisual communication and digital technologies. The best works will be published on PardoLive.
The courses will take place at the Dipartimento formazione e apprendimento (DFA) in piazza San Francesco 19, Locarno. More information and enrollment (fee: 30 CHF) at www.supsi.ch/go/oneframe.
