Warner Bros UnveilNew 8 Track/CassettePackagingWarner Bros have to wed their newpackaging concept for 8 track andcassette configurations. In making the announcement ofthe new design, the label's mer-chandising manager, Mike Doyle, pointed up some of the problemsthat added to the cost factor ofprevious packaging. This includedthe most common complaint of thehigher manufacturing costs inCanada as opposed to the U.S.attributed mainly to the smallerquantity of the run. This addedto the aggravation of inventorypositions as far as componentparts were concerned. Printinggraphics, the old way for 8 trackand cassettes called for the pre-paratory costs on two items, colourseparations and mechanicals, aswell as a printing run of 1000 foreach item. They were then leftwith 2000 sheets of paper and alarge sized tab to issue the sametitle. The new Warner Bros processeliminates the double costs ofpreparation and reduces the printto 1000. This also adds consider-ably to the appearance of thepackage because of the con-formity for printing of both con-figurations.The printed sheet reveals a seriesof crop marks. By following thesemarks, the cutter can make eitheran 8 track or cassette graphic. This means one sheet to be pre-pared (separations, mechanicalstype etc.) and one print run of1000, which allows for a tighter

Canadian ClassicalContent GrosslyUnderrated
The January -February issue ofMusicanada, a Canadian publica-tion issued by the Canadian MusicCentre and edited by Keith Mac-Millan, has devoted their entireissue to outline the number ofCanadian works (non -popular)available on record. The listingstresses the fact that the 75albums containing some 182 worksplus, are only listings of Canadianmusic and an even greater list ofnon -:Canadian music is availableby Canadian performers such asGlen Gould, Richard Verreau andmany others. These selectionsstill qualify as Canadian contentas defined by the proposed CRTCruling.
Musicanada's list is impressiveconsidering concentration isonly on the origin of the composi-tions (Canadian). In a forward by editor KeithMacMillan, he notes "Late in1964 the Canadian Music Centre'sNEWSLETTER, predecessor ofMUSICANADA, published a meagrelist of the four records of other -than -popular Canadian musicavailable at that time". The figuretoday exceeds all expectationwhen it is considered that therehas been no incentive directed atthe exposure media to broadcastCanadian recordings of Canadiancompositions.Canadian programmers will findvery little difficulty in familiar-izing themselves with the classicalor serious music available onrecords by Canadian composers, performed by Canadian artists, orproduced in Canada, to fulfillthe Canadian content (30%) pro-posed by the CRTC.It should be noted the proposed
legislation has already set thewheels in motion to make availableother Canadian content recordsfrom various sources.
There are two factors dominatingany argument that may develop. Inother countries, classical musicand recordings are heavily sub-sidized by government and patronsof music. Domestically producedrecords, of cultural merit, arealso subsidized by the success ofdomestic recordings and recordingcompanies. Neither of thesesituations apply in Canada. The CRTC proposed ruling maystart the ball rolling in this area, and many other areas of Canadianmusic and recording. This is justone of the purposes of the proposedruling and it seems the only wayto assure a degree of progress.
Palant To New YorkGary Palant, former program direc-tor at CKFH, takes over similarduties at WNEW-FM. Palant cameto Toronto after several years ofon -air and programming dutieswith major U.S. stations.
One of his biggest chores wastaking charge of programming ofCKFH and the launching of acampaign to move the station intoa strong competitive position withthe giant CHUM, a 50,000 watter.CKFH did make some advances, and against great odds being asthey were only 10,000 watts andunfortunately settled on a similartype of format to CHUM, whichaccording to one observer "tookthe swing out of the giant killer".Internal problems beset the operationresulting in an exiting of severalon -air personalities and productionpersonnel including Palant.
Palant's new duties have takenhim into a highly competitivemarket serviced by 17 radiostations. WNEW-FM is consideredone of the most progressive offree formers in New York, havingbowed this format in 1967.
It's ironic that since Palant'sleaving CKFH, the station hasmoved into the area of free formprogramming. Much of this newprogramming is being arranged bymorning man Duff Roman, who ishighly qualified as a music direc-tor, particularly within the realmof the youth market. There hasalso been an obvious change ofattitude of the on -air personalities.Delivery, generally, is much morerelaxed. Whether they play moremusic or not, they are gaining asolid block of listeners that couldcreate rating gains over the nextfew months.

was going on! It seemed extremely precious and pretentious to me -
and many times merely approached high camp - as in the western type spoof song (at least I assume
it was a spoof); "Sadie Lee". Amusing, but really unnecessary.
The String Band is so fabulous themselves, that I have no idea
why they joined up with this crew of pantomime artists - who at
best, seemed to me a bad imitation of the Kabuki Theatre.

This feature was taken for granted for some time and finally, we were
forced to leave it out one week. With no feedback registered, it was decided to drop the feature
entirely. It has now been discovered the listings were a very valuable
source of quick reference for dealer, company, one stops, juke
box operators, and radio stations. In view of the number of complaints,
the listing will return to its usual location - beside the RPM 100 singles chart.
Over the past six years, RPM has introduced many features. Some
have been dropped for various reasons and many have been copied
by other publications. The industry usually comments on any new feature - by mail, report sheets,
or telephone.
It is our sole purpose to utilize every inch of space in RPM to
inform the industry and perform services to assist the music industry. Your comments keep
us aware of what we should be doing, and your letters and tele- phone calls are the only gauge
we have of what is useful to the greatest number of our subscribers.
We would like to hear from you anytime you have a comment. If
you wish your comments to be kept in confidence, we will
comply with your wishes. The day RPM becomes an "ivory
tower operation" or a frightened manipulator, will be the day we
no longer will serve as a media reflecting the industry. Our
greatest concern is our service to our advertisers and subscribers.
This will be maintained to the best of our ability within the
economy our industry and country can afford.
"Pop Fest" Set
For Saint John
The City of Saint John, New Brunswick and Roscoe Productions
have skedded the weekend of May 16th for their Pop Festival,
tagged "Pop Fest" which will be held in conjunction with the
anniversary of Saint John and the grand opening of their new City Hall. The fever is gradually
building for the "Dedication
Weekend" and the spring breakout of the area's youth power. This
power will be well represented through 15 of the Atlantic Provin-
ces top groups which include Langley Beach Crowd, Naked
Killer Egg, Ashley Heavy, Fox, Moon-Minglewood and The Univer-
sal Power, Beowulf, Coventry, Saints, Fat Rufus, Storm, Salt and
Choppers, Rock Bottom, Circuit, and Fever. The non-profit weekend kicks off
at noon and keeps a steady pace until midnite.
Kirby reports a quickly developing rock market throughout the Atlantic
Provinces with his agency (Roscoe), Top Ten Maritime Ltd. and Enter-
tainment Contacts gearing for much attention from the rest of the
Provinces and the U.S. Several tours of out of the Province groups
including the U.S. have been set for the sun months.
RCA Bows Charne's
"To -Ma -Ray" Deck
Billy Charne, RCA Canadian country artist, has returned from
Nashville with his new "Music City" lid "To -Ma -Ray -Tom -O -Ray"
a self penning. The single has been released in both Canada and
the U.S. and has already received the nod from several radio stations on both sides of the border.
The catchy wah-wah backing adds much to the lyrics, the latter of
which could swing the single into the pop market, i.e.
Tommy went a wa - boo poo wa boo poo.

WB/Atlantic Acts Into Toronto
Warner Bros/Atlantic promotion manager (Ontario), Tom Williams, received an extra boost for album
promotion with the appearances of several artists in the Toronto area.
Delaney & Bonnie & Friends and The Sweet Inspirations completed the taping of the CBC-TV's
"Rock II" show, to be shown in the fall. Local press coverage and exceptional reviews added
much to the sales potential of the two groups.
RPM 9/5/70 - 3
Pentangle pulled a packed house to their Massey Hall concert (Apr
25) adding a few extra sales bucks to their "Basket Of Light" set.
Atco's Lulu into Toronto's Revolu- tion Sound Studios for taping of the Ray Stevens summer show, and
Doug Kershaw renews old friends with a one week stand at the
Colonial commencing May 4. Gordon Lightfoot, currently the
top seller in the Reprise roster, in for three days at Massey Hall
(2,3,4,). The concert is being presented by Bernie Fiedler,
owner of the Riverboat.
Sun-Bar/London Into Production Agreement
RCA's Sun -Bar Productions and Jack London Productions have
entered into an agreement for production of It's All Meat
masters at RCA's Toronto studios.
Tapes of London's group have already received the nod from
U.S. circles. Due to a previous commitment however, the masters
are the property of Columbia Records, who released a single
of the Meat group earlier this year.
Bill Misener, RCA's creative director and producer, and Mark
Smith, resident engineer, are also involved in the Meat productions.

Sudbury Gaining inImportanceThe Sudbury Area is becoming anexcellent outlet for live entertain-ment, according to George Ingham,Secretary of Local 290, A.F. of M.Discussing recent developmentswith RPM, Mr. Ingham cited thefollowing, in coming to the aboveconclusion...In February. Gordon Lightfootattracted close to 3000 to hisconcert at the Sudbury Arena. Laterthat same month almost 3000 showedup at the same building to see andhear The Poppy Family from Van-couver. In March, during the schoolmid -winter break, Stoned SessionLtd., of Kitchener brought 8 groupsto the Sudbury, headlined byToronto's own Lighthouse, and itattracted 4,000. The 8 groups hadbeen hired by the promoters for 3days, Monday in Ottawa, Tuesdayin Sudbury and Wednesday inLondon. Sudbury was the only cityof the three where the festival wasa financial success.Weekly dances, using both localand out-of-town talent are drawingexcellent crowds. The CarusoClub, using the local group TheReasons Y, have been drawingclose to 1100 each and every Sun-day evening for the last 18 months.High school student councils areconsistently netting good gate re-ceipts with local groups i.e., TheAssociated Presse, Village Steps,Riot, Purple Strange, LaurentianCombo and the new groups such asTraffik, Likwid Sunshyne, andothers. One high school has madeclose to $800. each month for thelast year on their dances. What'scausing this phenomenan couldn'tbe pinpointed by Ingham but he didcite the local groups mentionedearlier. Any promoters or bookingagents may come to the same con-clusion if they attend the 2ndannual "Sound Sudbury" gig onJune 30th, when all unionizedbands in the Sudbury Area will beunder one roof.
Other excellent local talent begin-ning to break on the nationalscene are The Rainvilles, recentlysigned to a recording contractwith Rodeo Records. Two singles, expected soon, are awaited eagerlyby fans in the Sudbury Area. Oneof their biggest boosters is HankSecord, Country Club's record -spinner on CKSO radio.
Another local talent, being coachedfor national coverage is TerryRoberts, who does his recordingin the Bahamas. Recently re-turned from a recording session,he is drawing excellent crowdsvtherever he appears. Both localradio stations, CHNO and CKSO
are giving his records extensiveair play. Persons who are closeto the music scene in Sudburyfeel the area is coming into itsown as an outlet for live enter-tainment.
Palmer Moves 10,000In WestCalgary: Arnold Palmer, a majorCalgary Record distributor hascreated a local sensation withhis sale of 10,000 copies of"The Ranger's Waltz" by theMoms and Dads. Palmer, whofrequently picks up virtuallyunknown acts for distribution onhis own label, grabbed the Wash-ington 'state -based Moms andDads and peddled their outing tohis regular disc customers. Inonly two or three weeks, Palmerreached the 10,000 mark in Albertaand Saskatchewan alone. Accordingto Compo's Allan Matthews, whosecompany has picked up the rightsfor a Moms and Dads album, thegroup's sound doesn't fit into apredefined category, but carrieswide appeal nonetheless. Thegroup specializes in dance musicand their sound has been comparedto that of Grady Martin.
Wilson BreaksRebroff ProductGeorge Wilson, recent addition toCFRB's on -air staff, brought withhim a wide and previously unheardcollection of European recordinggiants. Creating much listenerreaction is CBS recording artistIvan Rebroff. Wilson first airedselections by. this highly acclaimedRussian folk singer on his Fridayevening pop segment. So intense hasbeen the interest of CFRB pro-grammers and listeners alike.Wilson introduced Rebroff to hisusually staid "Starlight Concert"audience resulting in an immediatelighting up of the switchboard. TheRebroff selection that caused theswitchboard jam was "EveningBells" from his 2nd album, "FolkSongs From Old Russia" whichreveals his fantastic range. Wilsonreports the majority of telephonedenquiries came from University andpre -higher school students whichadded another dimension of listenerattraction to the highly ratedclassical show.Rebroff first came to the attentionof RPM in November of last yearresulting in the "picking" of hisset "Ivan Rebroff Sings RussianFolk Songs" (CBS GS 20089). Eachsubsequent release has been pickedand, according to Columbia's direc-tor of promotion and publicity, Bill
Eaton, sales of Rebroff product, henow has 4 albums released, haveincreased with much regularity. Hislatest release, "Fiddler On TheRoof" (Columbia FOS 716) is thesuccessful Paris production taped"live" at the Marigny Theatre.Plans are underway to bring Rebroffto North America but because ofhis heavy European scheduling, nodefinite dates can be set at thistime. Rebroff records in Germany inseveral languages.

Aragon's Moberg Makes Chart Gains
Back in March of this year Alan Moberg, Western Canada's talented
young songwriter and folksinger, recorded an album of his own
compositions to be released on Aragon's Sixth Avenue label. One
of these songs was "Walk In His Moccasins."
Early in April the annual 3 -day Moccasin Miles hike from Vancouver
to Hope, B.C., a distance of 100 miles, took place as a project to raise funds for various Indian
service organizations. Alan's song was used in conjunction with the on -air promotion of the hike on Langley radio station
CJJC. After the first playing, the station was swamped with calls to
play the song again and again, which prompted Moberg to take
part in the Moccasin Miles him- self. He and Rick Jonasson, of
CJJC along with more than 1400 other ambitious milers, started
out from Vancouver, arriving in Langley the first day. Mike Dodman of CJJC accompanied
"Moccasins" Moberg for the next two days, continuing the running
commentary of the trip, in the pouring rain, all the way from
Langley to Hope. Of the almost 1500 who started the hike on
Friday about 650 finished on Sunday having raised around
$100,000.00 in pledges. Since the Moccasin Miles event,
Moberg's song "Walk In His Moccasins" has continued to be
played and has gained in popularity on most Western Canadian stations. It is reportedly being used in
conjunction with a similar Mocca- sin Walk in Edmonton in May.
Even KAYO, Seattle's too country

stop in the 3 day hike from Hope to Vancouver.
PPM 9/5/70 ---7 station, has latched onto the
record and is giving it extensive air play. London Records, dis-
tributor of the single, have reported' heavy sales throughout the west
with encouraging reaction in the Eastern provinces. The flip side,
"A Drifting Kind Of Man" is receiving air play in many areas. Because of the success of the
single, Aragon has decided to title Moberg's forthcoming 6th
Avenue album, "Walk In His Moccasins".

Because thereare some 400 miles between Win-.nipeg and Yorkton, Gerry Youngof London Records doesn't get achance to drop in on us too oftenbut with his correspondence, hegives us the kind of service thatwould make one think he is rightnext door to the station. GerryYoung is the Branch Manager forLondon Records in Winnipeg, andin my four and one half years atCKDM, Dauphin, Manitoba, hisfine service was much appreciatedthere. On April 1st, of this year, the Winnipeg branch took overdistribution for London Recordsin Saskatchewan, and Gerry andhis boys have taken on the taskin fine style. We here at CJGX have a uniquesituation, in that we are in realitytwo stations in one. We havebroadcast studios in two cities,Yorkton and Melville, Saskatche-wan; each broadcasting daily, andeach maintaining record libraries. One of our biggest problems isgetting the record companies torealize that we need their releasesat both outlets. Gerry Young ofLondon had no trouble seeing thisand because of this, both CJGXYorkton, and CJGX Melville areable to play the new London re-leases. We at CJGX are forming anew sound which we call, "TheGreatest Hits Of All Times", andtherefore a large part of our air-play is million sellers. Realizingthat over the years, a radio stationloses many of the million sellersin the library, others break, orwear out, Gerry Young has madesure that we have all availableLondon Record million sellersfor airplay.

I'm sure that they will tell us what they want, simply by the free
choice of flipping the dial, after all isn't this what our Country is all about.
Finally, why is it that we must have a commission for Radio and
Television and not one for the newspapers and magazines. I'm
that if RPM were told that they must print only ten ads per page and 60 percent must be in
English and that you can only employ Canadian talent, RPM
might have something to say about that, is it just because a newspaper
charges for it's availability and radio and TV is free to the public that we must have a commission.
I didn't know that 15 cents was that important.
Keep up the good work.
Yours truly Dave Cook

Caravan/Polydor Sign Merrymen Deal
Frank Swain, president of Caravan Records, has negotiated a distri-
bution deal with Polydor Records for all Merrymen product. The deal
also includes distribution of Terry Roberts product, on Edmar, as
well as Caravan's newly bowed Island Series ("Sparrow").
Negotiations for Polydor's distri- bution of the above product was
set up by the label's national sales manager, Frank Henry, and their
Quebec sales manager, Guy Ber- trand. Fred Exon, managing direc-
tor of Polydor, finalized the deal with Swain. Polydor will handle
distribution from Ontario's Eastern Townships through the Atlantic Provinces.
Caravan looks after their own distribution in Ontario with
Emerson Sales/Vancouver, Van
Dusen Bros/Alberta and Saskat- chewan, and K Records/Manitoba.
The Merrymen have remained con- sistently, top sellers, with each
of their releases. Much of their popularity is due the efforts they
put forward in touring parts of Canada. Recent Montreal and net-
work television appearances have increased their popularity in
areas where they were previously unknown.
A pleasant switch is Canadian country singer Terry Roberts, who
has become a top seller in Merry - men territory (Bermuda, Bahamas
etc.). Roberts recently toured the Islands resulting in a sizeable
boost in his record sales. Back home in Canada (Sudbury) his
album sales have climbed steadily He is also experiencing good
singles action with his deck "Don't It Make You Wanna Go Home", still
making good gains on the RPM Country Fifty.
"Spring"
To say the calibre of artists on the Canadian pop scene has made
a tremendous leap in one decade is almost an understatement. It
is, however, encouraging to hear
trained musicians, backed by experience, with definite musical
ideas (sometimes called talent) on an equal footing with major
international groups. One such group is Spring - a Van-
couver -based quartet loaded with theoretical knowledge and putting
it successfully to work.
Listening to "As Feelings Go" f/s "Recreation Time", it is
difficult to imagine the group has been together for just over a
year. The sound of Spring can be ac-
credited to working with profes- sionals such as: Fifth Dimension,
Supremes, Eddie Arnold, Mel Carther and others, as did 23
year old Terry Frewer, lead guitarist and vocalist of Spring.
It can also be accredited to years of training: in electronic music at the University of British
Columbia as did Terry and Bob Buckley (23) who plays a total
of eight instruments; and eight years of piano, seven of bass guitar for 26 year old Pete McKin-
non. It can be marked up to sheer
will and interest and tracking from one end of the country to
the other as they all did, including Cat Hendrickse, drummer, from
Holland. There's a little more to it - there
has to be talent. What else would
prompt a composition that won the '66 BMI award for "Original
Composition for Full Orchestra" (a Buckley composition) and
"Song Cycle" a rock opera by Buckley and Frewer.
If their single is any indication, the album should be a great
sound experience. Although their present lid is on the rock side,
they could do equally well in underground or jazz.
On the Coast label - Spring - a formidable competitor in Canadian
pop, -Claire Louise Lalonde
RPM 9/5/70 - - 9
With the advent of more solid national thinking with regards
to Canadian talent, the group scene will soon show signs of
coming to life insofar as record- ing groups are concerned.
It is becoming increasingly important that recording artists
tour as far across Canada as possible to promote their re-
cords. Both disc jockey and promoter have told us they
would welcome visits from artists with records to promote.
There is a string of television shows that will assure exposure
for artists with records. Distri- butors will assist with store
promotions and a tour of the important radio stations.
As the industry grows, the record company will have to
become involved in doing a little more than hoping for a local or regional hit.
As record companies get together into production and as they have
to compete with the broadcasters in record production, it will be
necessary for the companies to find new and better ways to
compete. The money spent in the studio will have to be sup-
plemented with tours. Your booking agency can help. Hits
aren't made in the studio alone.
The hard work comes after the session with the tours and the
promotion that will assure air- play and record store sales.

A LISTENER SOUNDS OFF
Dear Sirs:First of all I would like to conveymy sincere appreciation to youand your staff for making RPMthe best buy in the trade. After reading many articles on theCRTC and their new regulationsregarding Canadian content, I stillcome back to my original thoughtson the end result, I hope I'm athousand miles off base, but herethey are. After the new music regulationsare in effect for a length of time,is it not possible that our listenerswill tune in TV and radio Americana? After a noticable drop in BBMisn't it possible that the ad menwill look south of the Canadianborder, even if the CAB's pro-posal that the tax write off bevoid for Canadians should theybuy time in the U.S., similar tothe 1965 U.S. rule that voids awrite off of American firms should
they buy time up here? The Canadian market simplycan't support the cost of productionin producing quality records,(this will exist in any case).Should the new regulations producebetter talent, or introduce newtalent, surely it would be too muchto expect that talent to stickaround Canada. If, through theCRTC's legislation we producestars worth listening to, they willhead south to pick up the bigmoney that we can't pay them.If that happens, what do we haveleft, 60 percent of poor qualitytalent that should, by rights,be sitting in the audience insteadof playing to one.Name me one singer that stuck itout in Canada that can comparewith the top, if you can than Iask what is he doing in Canada. It is no shame to go with themoney, it is only a shame to for-get that you are a Canadian.Instead of legislation of our con-tent, should we not try to producebetter talent throught a festivalsimilar to the Italian San Remo,or by making it easier for ourpeople to bring out their talent, government grants etc., etc.The CAB proposal is the best ideaI've heard of since the turn of the
century.I have great trust in the public,I'm sure that they will tell uswhat they want, simply by the freechoice of flipping the dial, afterall isn't this what our Country isall about. Finally, why is it that we musthave a commission for Radio andTelevision and not one for thenewspapers and magazines. I'msure that if RPM were told thatthey must print only ten ads perpage and 60 percent must be inEnglish and that you can onlyemploy Canadian talent, RPMmight have something to say aboutthat, is it just because a newspapercharges for it's availability andradio and TV is free to the publicthat we must have a commission.I didn't know that 15 cents wasthat important.Keep up the good work.
Yours trulyDave CookMississauga, Ont.

"Spring"To say the calibre of artists onthe Canadian pop scene has madea tremendous leap in one decadeis almost an understatement. Itis, however, encouraging to hear
trained musicians, backed byexperience, with definite musicalideas (sometimes called talent)on an equal footing with majorinternational groups. One such group is Spring - a Van-couver -based quartet loaded withtheoretical knowledge and puttingit successfully to work.Listening to "As Feelings Go"f/s "Recreation Time", it isdifficult to imagine the grouphas been together for just over ayear. The sound of Spring can be ac-credited to working with profes-sionals such as: Fifth Dimension,Supremes, Eddie Arnold, MelCarther and others, as did 23year old Terry Frewer, leadguitarist and vocalist of Spring. It can also be accredited to yearsof training: in electronic musicat the University of BritishColumbia as did Terry and BobBuckley (23) who plays a totalof eight instruments; and eightyears of piano, seven of bassguitar for 26 year old Pete McKin-non. would like to make mention of one of the finest record company
promotion men we have out here in western Canada. Because there
are some 400 miles between Win- nipeg and Yorkton, Gerry Young
of London Records doesn't get a chance to drop in on us too often
but with his correspondence, he gives us the kind of service that would make one think he is right
next door to the station. Gerry Young is the Branch Manager for
London Records in Winnipeg, and in my four and one half years at
CKDM, Dauphin, Manitoba, his fine service was much appreciated
there. On April 1st, of this year, the Winnipeg branch took over
distribution for London Records in Saskatchewan, and Gerry and
his boys have taken on the task in fine style.
We here at CJGX have a unique situation, in that we are in reality
two 'stations in one. We have broadcast studios in two cities,
Yorkton and Melville, Saskatche- wan; each broadcasting daily, and each maintaining record libraries. One of our biggest problems is
getting the record companies to realize that we need their releases
at both outlets. Gerry Young of London had no trouble seeing this
and because of this, both CJGX Yorkton, and CJGX Melville are
able to play the new London re- leases. We at CJGX are forming a
new sound which we call, "The Greatest Hits Of All Times", and therefore a large part of our air-
play is million sellers. Realizing that over the years, a radio station
loses many of the million sellers in the library, others break, or
wear out, Gerry Young has made sure that we have all available
London Record million sellers for airplay.
It is efforts like this by Gerry Young, Branch Manager of London
Records, Winnipeg, that have won him the respect of the GX FUN -
TIMERS, as one of the best record promotion men in Western Canada,

and I'm sure it certainly isn't hurting the sale of London Records either.

HELP! -
SMALL MARKETS
Dear Walt:
For the past five years I have been happily associated with the
broadcasting industry, especially with music, however I've recently
become quite perturbed because of the tardiness of different re-
cord companies in mailing out their latest releases, I strongly feel, and that may be because we
are situated a little farther north than most stations, that these
record companies seem to disregard stations that are out of their hearing range.
It has become evident that more attention will be given to Ca-
nadian content. I do think that some of that concentration should
be focused on the time it takes for us "northerners" to receive
new music. In listening to other stations,
(emphasizing metro stations) and reading music trade magazines, I
find myself, along with my fellow D.J's being "knocked out of our
trees". In making up the weekly survey
(s), I envision D.J's (cities) snickering at, what we proudly
refer to as, an up to date survey. This, rest assured, does every- thing but good for one's morale.
I need not remind you that, the
RPM 91''0-.-17 disc -jockey plays an important role in the success of recordings.
I do hope that after this someone, somewhere, somehow will come
to "our" aid. Bill Flamond,
Music Director, CKDM, Dauphin.

"Cream Of Cream"Solid SellerA&M's budget sampler "CreamOf Cream" ($1.98), containingcuts from the label's top artists, continues to chalk up solid na-tional sales. The set has alsoadded much sales importance tothe "Greatest Hits" album releasesof Herb Alpert and The TijuanaBrass; Baja Marimba Band; WesMontgomery; Sandpipers; PhilOchs, and others. Cassette (CS414)and 8 track (8T 414) sales are alsoreported very brisk.Gerry Lacoursiere, A&M's Cana-dian director, reports early indica-tions of "The Liquidator" byHarry J All Stars, as being asleeper. Graham Wyllie, of CKWSKingston, lists the deck as oneof the most requested of the year, giving it a berth on the station's20/20 survey.Joe Cocker's newest "The Letter"featuring Leon Russell and theShelter People, is now establishedas the hit side and moves up toNo. 39, after only three weeks onthe RPM 100. The flip "SpaceCaptain" is still showing goodaction. The Sandpipers are really havinga go at the charts this time 'roundwith their "Come Saturday Morn-
ing" lid, now taking the No. 51spot on Canada's national chart.
Still king and racing to break therecord of the all time single sellerfor A&M is Miguel Rios' "A SongOf Joy", in at No. 25. Althoughconsidered by many stations as aMOR item, there is strong evidencethat the free formers and top 40programmers will be forced togive way to the demands of theirlisteners. Vancouver's newestand most progressive free formupstart, CKVN, has given impor-tant play to the single and this, together with a heavy boost fromthe middle of the roaders, hascreated a healthy market for thesingle. Toronto's CKFH, nowsettling into an interesting patternof AM underground programming, has added another type of buyerfor the Rios deck.

However, I feel that they missed. The idea of putting a pantomime, pop or otherwise, to contemporarymusic is terrific, but it should notbe assumed that merely becausea group is doing something new,it is good. The costumes werelovely, and everyone was verypretty - but I had no idea of what
was going on! It seemed extremelyprecious and pretentious to me -and many times merely approachedhigh camp - as in the westerntype spoof song (at least I assumeit was a spoof); "Sadie Lee".Amusing, but really unnecessary. The String Band is so fabulousthemselves, that I have no ideawhy they joined up with this crewof pantomime artists - who atbest, seemed to me a bad imitationof the Kabuki Theatre. Two talented black actors walkedaway with Tony Awards at therecent presentation in New YorkCity. "Pop Fest" SetFor Saint JohnThe City of Saint John, NewBrunswick and Roscoe Productionshave skedded the weekend ofMay 16th for their Pop Festival, tagged "Pop Fest" which willbe held in conjunction with theanniversary of Saint John and thegrand opening of their new CityHall. The fever is graduallybuilding for the "Dedication
legislation has already set the wheels in motion to make available
other Canadian content records from various sources.
There are two factors dominating any argument that may develop. In
other countries, classical music and recordings are heavily sub-
sidized by government and patrons of music. Domestically produced
records, of cultural merit, are also subsidized by the success of
domestic recordings and recording companies. Neither of these situations apply in Canada.
The CRTC proposed ruling may start the ball rolling in this area,
and many other areas of Canadian music and recording. This is just
one of the purposes of the proposed ruling and it seems the only way
to assure a degree of progress.
Palant To New York
Gary Palant, former program direc- tor at CKFH, takes over similar
duties at WNEW-FM. Palant came to Toronto after several years of on -air and programming duties
with major U.S. stations.
One of his biggest chores was taking charge of programming of CKFH and the launching of a
campaign to move the station into a strong competitive position with
the giant CHUM, a 50,000 watter. CKFH did make some advances,
and against great odds being as they were only 10,000 watts and
unfortunately settled on a similar type of format to CHUM, which
according to one observer "took the swing out of the giant killer".
Internal problems beset the operation resulting in an exiting of several
on -air personalities and production personnel including Palant.
Palant's new duties have taken him into a highly competitive
market serviced by 17 radio stations. WNEW-FM is considered
one of the most progressive of free formers in New York, having
bowed this format in 1967.
It's ironic that since Palant's leaving CKFH, the station has moved into the area of free form
programming. Much of this new programming is being arranged by
morning man Duff Roman, who is highly qualified as a music direc-

The next five releases are all set to go now. They're performed by the following great -sounding names:
Gary BuckGary is from Sault Ste Marie. Back in 1963, his very firstrecording became one of North America's most popularCountry & Western hits. His newest Capitol L.P., "WaywardWoman of the World", contains the song that is currently ridinghigh on RPM's Canadian C & W chart.
Anne MurrayAnne's from Nova Scotia. But the beautiful, folk -orientedmusic she sings belongs in every province in the land. Herbrand new "Honey, Wheat, and Laughter," L.P. looks to be aneven bigger hit than her very successful first.
Bobby CurtolaBobby Curtola first burst upon the scene back when duck -tailsand white bucks were all the big thing. Since then he'smatured considerably, both as an individual and as an artist. You can hear the big change on his new "Changes" L.P.
Pierre LalondeCertainly no stranger to music lovers in Quebec, Pierre isout to make all of Canada take note of his voice. And hecertainly won't have any trouble doing just that when peoplehear his fine, new Capitol L.P. Its title is "The Young Years,"and you can believe us when we say it's "great".
Mother Tuckers Yellow DuckWith a name like Mother Tuckers Yellow Duck, a group can'treally help but make a lot of people stop and think. The birdsare wild about Mother Tuckers Yellow Duck. And so is everyoneelse who likes good solid Rock. Their new L.P., "Starting aNew Day," is the start of something big for MTYD.
