650 Nichols Street, Norwood, MA 02062 Serving Norwood, Walpole,
and Westwood
Mission Statement
The Catholic Community of St. Timothy serves the areas of
Norwood, Walpole, Westwood, and all who come to our door. The
serenity of our waterfront church property is a natural reminder of
all the gifts that God has given us. It is our vision, as a
Eucharistic people, to come to know and love Christ, to proclaim
his teachings through word and deed, to wor-ship together and to
minister to one another. We strive to form a supportive and
generous faith-filled community. We seek to bear wit-ness to
Christ's presence and compassion to all by our service to our
sisters and brothers. Jesus himself, gives the mission to us. “Go
therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold,
I am with you always, until the end of the age.” (Matthew
28:18-20)

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Question for Children: What will you do during Advent so that
others can see the light of Jesus in you?
Question for Adults: What will you do during Advent so that
oth-ers can see that you have put on the light of Jesus Christ?
December 3 ~ First Sunday of Advent Advent is a season of
waiting. All of us are waiting for the coming of Christ and as the
Gospel says, “You do not know when the Lord is coming.” Pray for
the strength to follow Jesus, to keep Him in mind even though the
incessant commercialism of the season tries to turn our attention
away from Him. And pray for the courage to introduce Jesus to
others.
Today we begin a new liturgical year and season on this first
Sunday of Advent. The new year is often a time of reflection of the
past and anticipation of the future. It’s a time when we all begin
with good intentions to make changes and improve-ments in life. In
some ways a new year in the church is no different. As the
Eucharistic liturgy reminds us “we wait in joyful hope.” And it is
with that “joyful hope” in our hearts that we must look forward to
Pastoral Planning in our parish with hope for a bright future.
On November 14 and 15 members of our parish staff, Parish
Pastoral and Finance Councils along with several parishion-ers
participated in the first of three training sessions of Disci-ples
in Mission. We were joined by members of others par-ishes who have
begun the process of implementing the Pasto-ral Plan of the
Archdiocese. We are all local parish collabora-tives who are part
of Phase V. Some are single parishes, oth-ers are multiple
parishes, but we are all embarking on this journey of the New
Evangelization together. It is a new year filled with hope for all
of us.
As I have said before, the New Evangelization is not all that
new. The term was first used by Pope John Paul II in 1983 in an
address to the bishops of Latin America. During that talk he
encouraged them to reach out to Catholics who are not part of our
regular, worshiping communities. He challenged the bishops to a
“New Evangelization, new in its ardor, meth-ods and
expression.”
Our challenge as we move forward will be to take an honest and
objective look at our parish life at St. Timothy. As we look at our
worship life together, our programs and our out-reach efforts we
need to see it through new eyes. What we have been doing may well
suit those who are participating regularly. But what about those
who have fallen away? If we look objectively perhaps we will find
areas where we can improve. And if we take the challenge of John
Paul II to ap-proach all of our ministries with new “ardor, methods
and expression” we will develop new models and new programs that
will give a new and exciting expression to our faith life. And this
will hopefully attract new people to all that we have to offer as a
vibrant community of faith.
As we begin another new year together let us all make a
reso-lution to face this year with open minds, open hearts and open
spirits so that we can be open to all of the possibilities that the
future holds in store for our parish and each member. We must not
fear what the future holds but embrace it with a joy-ful hope that
is promised to us in each celebration of the Eu-charist. Let us
pray that this Advent season will be fruitful for all of us. Fr.
Petringa
A Message from our Pastor
Celebrating Advent “Advent has a twofold character: as a season
to prepare for Christ-mas when Christ’s first coming to us is
remembered; as a season when that remembrance directs the mind and
heart to wait Christ’s Second Coming at the end of time. Advent is
thus a period for devout and joyful expectation.” General Norms for
the Liturgical Year, #39 During the season of Advent, we are called
to remember that Christ, the Light of the World, became Man and
that he will come again at the end of the World. Our liturgy
reflects this mood of quiet expectation in several ways: purple is
used for vestments; decorations are minimal; the lighting is darker
due to the length and darkness of our days; the Gloria is not sung
or recited. As we re-call Christ’s coming in history and await with
joy his second com-ing, we are also called to remember that Christ
is not absent from us at this time. Christ is Emmanuel, “God with
us,” today and al-ways. This Advent we offer to you a few tools to
help you celebrate the season more fully throughout the week. The
use of the Advent Wreath is one way we recall the theme of light
and hope in this season and it is well suited to use in the home as
part of the fami-ly’s evening meal prayer. Advent Candles will be
available for purchase this week after all Masses. The proceeds of
the sale of these candles will offset the cost of the 60
Thanksgiving baskets that our parish provided to families in need
this year. Advent Wreath prayer sheets for use in the home will be
provided to all at no cost. In addition, we have a limited number
of “Little Blue Books” avail-able at no cost. These prayer books
offer a brief reflection based on Scripture for each day of Advent
and are a wonderful resource to help you enter into the prayer of
this season as we prepare our hearts to celebrate fully the feast
of Christmas. The advent candles, advent wreath prayer sheets, and
the Advent “Little Blue Books” will all be available in the
gathering space as you leave Mass this weekend.
As the days get shorter and the nighttime longer, we are
reminded that we are also approaching the cold and flu season. As a
faith community, we are quite blessed to be able to distribute Holy
Communion under both species:
both the Body of Christ and the Blood of Christ. We would like
to remind parishioners that at all times, but especially during the
cold and flu season, we should be aware of our own health before
approaching the Cup to receive the Blood of Christ. If we are
feeling ill at all, we should refrain from receiving from the Cup.
We thank you all for being attentive to this matter.

Together, we make a difference!
Last Tuesday a group of middle and high school students made the
short journey to Harrington House to visit with our elderly
neighbors. We made pinecone bird feeders and hung them outside
residents’ windows for them to enjoy bird watching during December.
The coming joy of the Advent season was already evident in the
students’ and residents’ smiles, laughs and easy conversation. The
Spirit was truly palpable. CAPERNAUM MINISTRY All teens and adults
