What is copyright?

“copyright is a form of

protection grounded in the U.S.

Constitution and granted by

law for original works of

authorship fixed in a tangible

medium of expression.

Copyright covers both

published and unpublished

Doctrine of Fair Use

§ 107: Fair Use “various purposes for

which the reproduction of a particular

work may be considered fair, such as

criticism, comment, news reporting,

teaching, scholarship, and research”

This code of best practices, that

consists of 5 principles was

created to assist educator’s in

K–12 education, higher

education, and in classes given

by nonprofit organizations and

they apply to all forms of media.

and students of accredited,

nonprofit educational institutions

to transmit performances and

displays of copyrighted works as

part of a course if certain
