HOW DO I WRITE A PAPER?
The 5 step process to effective writing
Where do I start?
STEP 1
Pre-Writing
What is pre-writing?
Pre-writing is a time to think!
Decide what topic you will write about
Brainstorm through ideas about the subject
Try using a graphic organizer or journal your thoughts
Think about where you will research your topic
Consider using
Newspapers
Magazines
Online data bases
Library periodicals
Now do your research!
Time for Step 2
Drafting
What is drafting?
Drafting is
Writing, writing, writing
Begin writing your ideas and what you
want to include from your research
Be sure to put the research into your own
words when you are writing
Don’t worry about editing your sentences
yet—get the information down first and
edit later
Make sure you have enough content to
work with as you begin editing
Don’t be afraid to share your ideas with
others and ask for suggestions
Read what you have written
Time for Step 3
Revising
What is revising?
Making it better!
Read what you have
written again
Rearrange or omit parts
Replace overused or unlear words
Read your paper aloud to make sure things are smooth
Time for Step 4
Editing
What is editing?
Editing is
Making it correct
Correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling
Use correct grammar and tense
Be sure sentences are complete
Let someone else review your paper
Make a final copy that is neat and correct
Time for Step 5
Publishing
What is publishing?
Publishing is sharing your paper!
Submit your paper to your teacher
Share with a friend or relative
Put your writing on display
Read your writing aloud
Illustrate your work or set it to music
Be proud of your work!
So what were those steps again?
