For many years in the Catholic Church we have had the custom of having an intention for each Mass, usually for a deceased relative or friend. Here at St. Monica these intentions are published every week in the bulletin. Depending on the parish, there might also be a custom mentioning the person’s name as part of the general intercessions or before the Mass is celebrated. However, this does not always happen, nor does it have to. The Mass intention is added to the prayers of the priest, even if the person or the intention is not said aloud. I think it might also be helpful to know that all of our deceased relatives and friends are remembered at every Mass, celebrated in every country, in all languages throughout the world. Every time a Mass is offered one of these four prayers is spoken by the priest:

“Remember Lord your servants, who have gone before us with the sign of faith and rest in the sleep of peace. Grant them, O Lord, we pray, and all who sleep in Christ, a place of refreshment, light and peace (Eucharistic Prayer I). ”

“Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy: welcome them into the light of your face (Eucharistic Prayer II).”

“To our departed brothers and sisters and to all who were pleasing to you at their passing from this life, give kind admittance to your kingdom (Eucharistic Prayer III).”

“Remember also those who have died in the peace of your Christ and all the dead, whose faith you alone have known (Eucharistic Prayer IV).”

Know that every day every priest in the world is praying for you and your loved ones to be received into the Kingdom of God.

Peace, Fr. Todd Por muchos años en la Iglesia Católica hemos tenido la costumbre de tener una intención para cada Misa, usualmen-te por un familiar fallecido o un amigo. Aquí en Sta. Mónica estas intenciones son publicadas cada semana en el bole-tín. Dependiendo de la parroquia, también puede ser costumbre que se mencione el nombre de la persona como par-te general de las intercesiones o antes que se celebre la Misa. Aunque, no siempre es así, ni tampoco tiene que ser así. La intención de la Misa se añade a las oraciones del sacerdote y son escuchadas por Dios, aún si la persona o la intención no se dice en voz alta. Pienso que es de gran ayuda el que sepa que todos nuestros familiares difuntos y amigos son recordados en cada Misa, celebrada en cada país, en todos los idiomas, a través del mundo entero. Cada vez que se ofrece una Misa una de estas oraciones es dicha por el sacerdote: “Acuérdate también, Señor, de tus hijos que nos han precedido con el signo de la fe y duermen ya el sueño de la paz. A ellos, Señor, y a cuantos descansan en Cristo, concédeles el lugar del consuelo, de la luz y de la paz. THE LORD’S PANTRY

ABOUT THE MINISTRY

The Lord’s Pantry provides support and food for the poor on

the west side areas of Indianapolis, near St. Monica Church.

The food pantry serves approximately 250 families each week

a four to five day supply of food which includes non-

perishables, meat selections, fresh vegetables and dairy

products when available.

SPIRITUAL GIFTS REQUIRED: Mercy, caring, compassion

TO DONATE:

You are encouraged to bring non-perishable nutritional food

items (cereal, rice, peanut butter, canned meats, pasta, etc.)

when you come to mass each weekend. Food items may be

placed in the bin located in the temporary “narthex” in the

gym church entrance. To donate money, send your check

directly to The Lord’s Pantry at 5136 N. Michigan Rd., and be

sure to put “for Witherspoon Pantry” in the memo section.

TO VOLUNTEER:

Drivers are needed to pick up and transport food and product

to the pantry on Tuesday mornings. Help is also needed

sorting and distributing food. To volunteer, contact

TO REQUEST ASSISTANCE:

Food is distributed at Witherspoon Presbyterian Church

located at 5136 N. Michigan Road, every Tuesday beginning at

approximately 10:30 a.m. The Lord’s Pantry also distributes

food Saturdays from 10am-Noon at Anna’s House at the

corner of Elder and New York Streets downtown. A list of

other food pantries is available in the parish office.

First Reconciliation Retreat On Saturday, November 14 from 9:30AM to 12:30PM our 2nd through 6th grade students who have been prepared to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation will participate in a retreat and prayer service with their parents. This day is for only the Reconciliation student and his/her parents; please do not bring siblings. The students should dress in their nice clothes (not jeans) for this special occasion. We ask the rest of the parish to remember them in your prayers that they will continue to receive the Sacrament and experience God's unconditional love for them.

Christmas Brass Rehearsals Anyone under the age of 20 who volunteered to play for Christmas should plan to rehearse EVERY SUNDAY from 4:15-5:15pm in the Eagle's Nest beginning Sunday, November 15. Contact Amy Eggleston with questions, 253-2193, ext. 2 or [email protected].

Attention, All Gardeners! All interested gardeners are invited to attend a planning meeting to discuss ideas on how to “grow” our parish garden. This year’s harvest helped many families who come to the Lord’s Pantry each Tuesday by providing them with fresh produce. Let’s see if we can do even more for them next year! Catholic Business Exchange Father Rick Nagel, Pastor at St. John the Evangelist church in downtown Indianapolis, will address the November Catholic Business Exchange. He will speak on the subject: Attracting young Catholics back to the Church--Making it relevant in Modern Times.

The event is Friday morning, November 20, at the North Side Knights of Columbus. Mass starts at 7am and the program will be finished by 9am. Cost for the program includes a great breakfast and is $15 in advance for members and $21 for non-members. Registration is required. Get Involved — Live Your Faith!

NCYC Volunteers Needed Volunteers are still needed to assist with the CRS and CCHD booth space at NCYC (National Catholic Youth Conference). The CRS & CCHD space is very large - with a lot of interactive activities which need volunteers.

Six volunteers are needed each day - Nov. 19-21. (Please see times below) This is a great opportunity to witness over 10,000 youth come together for one purpose - to be witnesses for Christ.

All volunteers need to have completed he Archdiocesan Safe and Sacred program (takes about 45 minutes to complete online) prior to volunteering (needs to be completed by Nov. 1st). If you already completed the program, then you don't need to worry about that part.

St. Vincent de Paul Turkey Donations Unfortunately, because of the difficulty in collecting and storing turkeys for our annual Thanksgiving Baskets this year after the fire, the St. Vincent de Paul Society is NOT requesting or taking donations of turkeys this Thanksgiving. Instead, we have arranged to give our families Gift Cards they can use to purchase their own turkeys. If you would like to contribute to this, you can place your donation in a regular envelope marked "St. Vincent de Paul" and put it into the regular collection basket on Sundays. LA DESPENSA DEL SEÑOR

ACERCA DEL MINISTERIO

La despensa del Señor proporciona apoyo y comida a los

pobres en el lado oeste de Indianápolis, cerca de Santa Mónica.

La despensa del Señor sirve aproximadamente a 100 familias

cada semana con comida para cuatro o cinco días que incluye

comidas enlatadas, selecciones de carne, vegetales frescos y

productos lácteos cuando hay disponibles.

DONES ESPIRITUALES REQUERIDOS: Misericordia, cuidado,

compasión

PARA DONAR:

Se pide que traiga comida nutritiva que no se eche a perder

(cereal, arroz, crema de cacahuate, carnes enlatadas, pasta,

etc.) cuando venga a la Misa cada fin de semana. La comida se

puede dejar en el contenedor que se encuentra en el nártex

temporal en la entrada de la Iglesia gimnasio.

PARA SER VOLUNTARIO:

Los martes por la mañana para los conductores que puedan

transportar la comida a la despensa. También se necesita

Retiro de la Primera Reconciliación El sábado, 14 de noviembre de 9:30 AM a 12:30PM nuestros estudiantes del 2do al 6to grado que han sido preparados para recibir el Sacramento de la Reconciliación participarán en un retiro y servicio de oración con sus padres. Este día es solamente para los estudiantes de la Reconciliación y sus padres; por favor NO TRAIGA a sus demás hijos. Los estudiantes deben vestirse con ropa de vestir (no pantalones de mezclilla) para esta ocasión especial. Les pedimos al resto de la parroquia que los recuerde en sus oraciones para que puedan continuar recibiendo el Sacramento y sientan el amor incondicional de Dios por ellos.

¡Atención, a todos los Jardineros!

Se invita a todos los jardineros interesados a asistir a una reunión de planeación para hablar sobre ideas de cómo “plantar” nuestro jardín de la parroquia. Este año nuestra cosecha ayudó a muchas familias que fueron a la Despensa del Señor cada martes proporcionándoles verduras frescas. ¡Vamos a ver si podemos hacer más para este próximo año! La reunión es el sábado, 14 de noviembre a las 10:30 AM en el salón 3 de la casita (PMC). Donaciones de Pavos para San Vicente de Paul

Desafortunadamente, debido a la dificultad para recolectar y guardar pavos para nuestras canastas del Día de Acción de Gracias este año después del incendio, la Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul NO está pidiendo o tomando donaciones de pavos esta vez. En esta ocasión, les daremos a las familias tarjetas pre-pagadas que pueden usar para comprar sus propios pavos. Si usted desea contribuir con esto, usted puede dejar sus donaciones en un sobre y marcar que es para “San Vicente de Paul" y dejarlo en la canasta regular de la

Considere estas preguntas… Cada domingo es un “Día del Señor.” ¿Cómo toma este día

para “esperar ansiosamente por Él”?

¿Experimenta la vida de Dios – ha sentido que Dios la ha

llenado de cosas buenas? ¿Qué hizo Dios por usted?

¿Cuándo fue esto? ¿Cómo usted respondió?

¿Cómo hizo una “ofrenda al Señor”? ¿Donó dinero? ¿Otros

bienes? ¿Cómo usted se dio a sí mismo? ¿Está usted

midiendo lo que da – o es como la viuda, ansiosa de

darse completamente?

PRÁCTICAS para la semana:

Considere cómo pasa su Adviento con su familia. Haga

un calendario de lo que hará. Considere ir a las Cenas

del Domingo de Adviento de 4:00-6:00 pm en Sta.

Mónica.

Haga un altar en una mesa para su familia. Ponga una

corona de Adviento y tómense tiempo para leer diaria-

mente las escrituras en Adviento, al encender la vela de

cada semana de Adviento.

Al empezar el año de la Iglesia en Adviento, reconsidere

su “promesa” a la Parroquia si no lo ha hecho

recientemente. ¿Cuánto es lo que usted y su familia

donan semanalmente en la colecta? ¿Cómo se

encuentran diariamente con Dios en la oración – aun

cuando parece aburrida o seca? ¿Cómo hará un “tiempo

santo” – tiempo separado para Dios?

“Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors…

they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty,

has contributed all she had.” Mark 12:43-44

Consider these questions… Every Sunday is a “Day of the Lord.” How do you take this day to “eagerly await him”?

Do you experience life from God – have you ever felt God filling you with good things? What did God do for you? When was

this? How did you respond?

How do you make “an offering to the Lord”? Do you give money? Other goods? How do you give of yourself? Are you meas-

ured in how you give – or like the widow, are you eager to give your whole self?

PRACTICEs for coming week:

Consider how to spend your Advent with your family. Make a calendar of what you will do. Consider

going to the Advent Sunday Suppers every Sunday in Advent from 4:00-6:00 pm at St. Monica.

Make a prayer table for your family. Put an Advent wreath on it and make time to read the daily readings

every day in Advent, as you light the candle for each week of Advent.

As the Church year begins in Advent, reconsider your “pledge” to your Parish if you have not recently done

so. What can you and your family give weekly in the collection? How will you meet God daily in

prayer – even when it seems boring or dry? How will you make “holy time” – time set apart for God?
