CSD ANNUAL RETREAT
AUGUST 8, 2016
Present: M. Hough; A. Ardila; E. Ramos; J. Mead; A. Medina; T. Munoz; A. Alfano

Old business:
1) Reviewed faculty minutes from 6/1/2016 faculty meeting, minutes approved.
2) All goals and objectives for 2015-2016 were met.
3) 2014-16 class started with 45 students: one student was terminated (Volcy); one student has not taken Praxis exam and will graduate in December (Canal); one student has taken Praxis exam four times and has not passed (N Gonzalez); one student took Praxis twice and passed. First time pass rate: 41/43; overall pass rate: 42/43.
One student has not graduated but has taken and passed the Praxis (Lopez)…at this time, graduation
rate is 41/45.
4) CSD Research Day was excellent; plan to continue this next year. Discussion yielded the need for more time and space. Use of Room 110 and hold the event the entire day. Will always be the last day of summer semester, typically Friday.
5) 2015-2017 graduate cohort is overall doing well. Some concerns with a few students relative to class performance. A few students have need for counseling and this has been suggested to them. Faculty will monitor those individuals and make sure they know that there are services available for them through the university.
New business:
6) New incoming graduate cohort: All students passed their background check, a few are having issues with obtaining prior immunization records from home countries. Dr. Mead is working with these students.
Two GAs for CSD for 2016-2017. One for Medina and one for Alfano.
7) Masters Projects/Theses 2016-2017: All students doing Masters’ Project, except two who will do a Thesis, one with Ardila and one with Mead.
8) Incoming student orientation: 8/17/2016, 3pm-6pm. Agenda is forthcoming. Discussion on agenda relative to counseling services available to students on campus. Recruiting three second year students to help with orientation of incoming class with mailboxes, offices, labs, etc.
9) Graduate Certificate: program is growing. Approximately 50 students accepted each semester, with a completion rate of 85%. Now, approximately 80 students apply each semester. Will continue to monitor progress of students. Also, will more definitively monitor number of students applying to and being accepted into SLP Masters’ program at FIU.
10) HRSA grant not awarded to FIU this award period. First time in 8
years CSD is not receiving funds.
11) CALIPSO – online program to clock hours. Mead is investigating use
of program for CSD.
12) CAA Re-accreditation Site Visit: set for 9/29- 9/30/16.
Tentative site visit agenda developed and waiting on approval by site visit team.
Portal will be developed for site visitor review of documentation beginning September 1. Linda Carty will
prepare the portal for site visitors based on work that Gilda and office staff have completed according to
each CAA standard.
Initial Observations (IO): included 1) one link not working and 2) classroom space issues. Cornely and
Hough have met to discuss space plan; Hough will finalize written plan and share with Cornely. Need
designated classroom space.
CSD website: website will be updated by 9/1. Faculty should send any events or pictures for website
before that date to M. Hough. Site visitors will visit a couple of sites on Friday, between 1pm-3pm
(flexible with time). Possibly SPEC and Baptist.
Public Meeting: inviting alumni, employers, off campus supervisors, CSD advisory board members, FIU
Community familiar with program.
Advisor logs and student files must be accurate and in order.
13) Space Issues
Fernando Irrizary has a few ideas/suggestions on increasing space for
Room 407. Also have discussed splitting the lab space behind 407 in
half for Medina and Alfano.
14) Publication strategies: discussion of publication of Masters’
Projects/theses. Faculty are encouraged to get papers submitted to
journals as quickly as possible.
15) Conference attendance 2016-2017: submit tentative plans for
conference attendance for upcoming academic year Hough. Submit
request for TAR if going to ASHA.
16) Other problems/concerns: M. Hough expressed gratitude for faculty &
Staff for 2015-2016 performance.
17) Announcements:
1) Faculty will be receiving email from department office regarding missing syllabi for the past 5 years.
2) NWCNHS College Retreat: Tuesday, August 16, 2016, 8:30-6:00 Kovens Center, BBC Campus
3) International Conference on Bilingualism in the Hispanic and Lusophone World, Florida State
University, January 27-29, 2017.....submission of Masters projects as appropriate…
1) Reviewed faculty minutes from June 8; minutes approved 2) CSD goals & objectives 2014-15 discussed 3) 2013-2015 graduate cohort:
-PRAXIS scores low but still acceptable: for 2015, first time pass rate is 90% -this was the last class that was not interviewed and they are weaker than the class that was interviewed -Miami Dade contract: although significant source of income for the department-was not a big hit-students are enjoying internships more now and aren’t too interested in MDCPS internships
4) Status of Graduate Certificate in CSD
-3.0 GPA for incoming students for graduate certificate is ok; based on overall GPA rather than UG60 -however, some concern over grad certificate students dropping online course-financial issues possible reason
5) 100 Black Men
-college and CSD assisted with in-service to children attending 100 black men summer camp. CSD had wonderful participation with Mead, Munoz, Ramos, and Simon
6) CSD faculty positions
-new hires: Dr. Angela Granese (fall 2015) and Dr. Alliete Alfano (spring 2016)
-officially will add one credit course on Professional Issues which will be taught by Dr. Mead; this will change the number of credits -also reinstating SPA 6005 and SPA 6479 as required courses in the bilingual emphasis. -SPA 6322 Aural Rehab will become an elective as many students will now complete this course prior to applying to MS
3) Masters Projects: -Some students in the graduating class have been misinformed on master’s project -need to choose project and professor they want to work with and realize this is a data-based project -Procedures for publication authorship were discussed: suggested that a call be placed to student to see who is interested in pursuing in writing publication – not fair for professor to do
all the work and then have to add students as authors; acknowledgement of students is sufficient
4) HRSA grant: poverty level to qualify-16 applicants only 13 qualified; approximately $12000 per student
5) CSD distinguished speaker and alumni reunion: possible date 10/16/15. Kim English will handle coordination of event. CEUs will be offered. Dr. Jamie Perry speaker—background in craniofacial disorders and genetics
6) CAA report and reaccreditation: -Based on CAA report and space, Dr. Mead will send out email with procedure on scheduling the computer labs -Need to start working on re-accreditation later this year -Dr. Hough working on getting department access to work on our website
7) Other problems and concerns:
-G. Patane will look into a new scanner for lab as well as new computers for faculty and laptop
Present: Ardila, Gouvea, Hough, Mead, Muňoz, Ramos (secretary) Old Business: Review minutes of 5/14/14 – reviewed and approved. MDCPS Dr. Hough explained that the county has terminated our contract. This process started in April when MDCPS contacted us about terminating the contract at that time. We were able to negotiate continuation to maintain service to the students and internships to our graduate students. However, the contract has now terminated for the 2014-15 academic year. Dr. Hough and College administrators will investigate the legality of this breach of contract. In the meantime, the department seems to be in solid financial condition. Dr. Hough is pursuing alternative means of maintaining financial stability which is expanded in “Generation of funds/budget” under New Business. We may also pursue similar contracts with Broward and/or Palm Beach counties. Masters project Students and faculty are very satisfied with the new format of masters projects. Some points discussed to make the experience even better include making sure every faculty member has clear deadlines for the students and division of tasks. One problem noted with this new format is that students don’t get to write a research paper individually. Dr. Hough volunteered to include such a paper in her Research Methods class. CSD position Dr. Ramos reported that the Search & Screen committee has met with the Equal Opportunities Program coordinator and is ready to re-start the search as soon as the new announcement is posted online. Ads will be placed on the ASHA leader, CAPCSD website, and ASHA minority listing. We hope to have the position filled by spring 2015. Review of interview process All faculty members agreed that the interview process went well and it was a worthwhile addition to our admissions process. We also received positive feedback from applicants. We won’t really know how well it went until the new class starts in the fall. Dr. Mead suggested that we allow enough time for interviewers to discuss each candidate right after each interview, rather than at the end of the day. University Review 2014-2015 Dr. Hough is working on our program review which is due at the end of October. According to Academic Affairs measures, such as retention rates, Praxis pass rate, and employment, our program is doing extremely well. Dr. Hough asked the faculty to give her suggestions on at least 2 people who can serve as outside reviewers. She already has 3 in mind, but would like to give 5 names to Academic Affairs. Potential reviewers should be full Professors and active researchers. CAA Review of Annual Report 2012 -2013 Our annual report was approved with no changes. Thanks, Monica!
New Business: Curriculum/new courses Dr. Mead will add a one-credit Professional Issues course. She will meet regularly with students during the fall, but students will only register for the course during winter break, so that they can have a chance to complete all required background checks and immunizations before getting a final grade for the course. Dr. Hough is planning to offer an AAC course as an elective as students have requested to have this course. Both courses need to be submitted to the Curriculum Committee. Dr. Ardila suggested the addition of a basic course in Neuropsychology. Drs. Hough and Ardila with consult with Anthony Dick from the Psychology department to explore this possibility. Generation of funds/ budget Dr. Hough reported that the Health Sciences Chairs met with Tonja Moore in the presence of the Dean to discuss our financial status and learned that all the HS programs are operating with a surplus. In spite of this positive news, Dr. Hough decided that we should show good faith as team players and attempt to replace some of the revenue lost with the MDCPS contract. The department is admitting an additional 6 students this fall (for a total of 45). Dr. Hough has also submitted our proposal to move from an undergraduate to a graduate certificate to be reviewed by the Curriculum Committee in its first meeting. If approved, the graduate certificate will bring us significant additional funds. Dr. Ardila suggested that we should provide CE courses to generate funds as well. Incoming students/class size As explained above, we will have 45 new incoming students. The faculty discussed ways of dealing with the additional numbers and seem comfortable (if not happy) with this number. Dr. Hough assured us that if this number turns out to be too high, we will go back to fewer students. Graduate Assistantships Each program is only getting one 10-hour/week GA. Dr. Hough has already selected the student for this assistantship. We may be able to get one additional GA and Dr. Hough requested that faculty members review the applicants and give her their preference. Monthly departmental research colloquium Dr. Hough suggested that we hold these meetings to have informal presentations and Q&As for our masters projects. The faculty agreed that this would be a good way to be more aware of others’ projects as well as to give and receive feedback on the projects. Students will also be invited to these meetings so they can learn from these interactions as well. Other Business Dr. Hough reminded us that Orientation will be on Thursday, August 21st, at 3:30 pm. Dr. Mead suggested that we hold a graduation event for students and faculty. This event could happen on the day of project presentations or on the evening preceding commencement. We will try to implement this next year.
Dr. Hough will meet with second year students on the first day of class to “re-orient” them, i.e., remind them of some issues covered in their Orientation, such as master’s projects, Praxis, etc. One of our Advisory Board members, Barbie Cardoso, has offered to help our program in replacing the revenue lost with the MDCPS contract. Dr. Hough will plan an Advisory Board meeting this year where this issue can be addressed. Meeting was adjourned at 4:30PM Respectfully submitted, Eliane Ramos

2013 Annual Retreat Communication Sciences & Disorders
August 5, 2013 10 am
Present: Ardila, Gouvea, Hough, Mead, Muňoz, Ramos (secretary) Review of Faculty minutes – 7/1/13 reviewed and approved 2012-2013 departmental accomplishments 2013-2014 goals and objectives Dr. Hough reviewed all the information on accomplishments and goals to be presented at the Chairs and Directors retreat on 8/9/13. Faculty members were provided with copies of the reports to be presented and given an opportunity to comment and ask any questions. As seen on the reports, the CSD department has had a very productive year and continues to aim high on establishing goals and objectives. In addition to the accomplishments in the report, Dr. Hough also reported that: 31 out of the 32 students taking the Praxis for the first time passed it. 80 students were admitted into the certificate program for this fall and 80 more will be admitted in the spring. Administrative: College and Department Update
The budget office will prepare a presentation to the entire faculty in the college this fall where the following issues will be discussed:
Decrease in funds available due to elimination of tuition plus Development of the Office of Clinical Affairs headed by Sheldon Fields which will handle
all College contracts Termination of all College OPS effective August 30, 2013 (Dr. Hough is attempting to
secure a permanent secretary position to replace our full-time OPS.)
Graduate tuition will be $694.49 per credit for academic year 2013-14 and $230 per credit will return to the department.
Dr. Debra Sherman was hired as the new Associate Dean for Academic Affairs
CURRENT ISSUES Open position
The faculty agreed that we should invite Dr. Guntupalli to return to the university to interview with the Provost’s office in an effort to full our open position with a tenured faculty member
Masters projects/theses; Masters topics
Faculty members were instructed to email their topics to Dr. Hough by the end of the week Interview process for 2014 graduate applicants
The faculty discussed different procedures for interviewing applicants and collecting a spontaneous writing sample. Dr. Hough will distribute some standard question for review and further discussion in future meetings
Distribution of SDS monies
Dr. Ramos explained the process for distributing SDS funds and asked for faculty input on applicants who qualified. Thirteen graduate students will receive funds to cover at least 50% of their tuition for the 2013-14 academic year
Graduate assistantships 2013-201
Dr. Hough is in discussion with the Budget Office to secure 3 half-time GAs for the department Other Student Issues
ML has re-enrolled in the program and will do an Advanced Practicum in the fall AH failed her practicum after receiving an Incomplete. Her status will be closely monitored in
the fall GRIPING TIME STRATEGIC ISSUES/FUTURE PLANNING Faculty/program direction
Faculty members were instructed to brainstorm about the future of the program and bring their ideas to future meetings. One idea brought up during this meeting included expanding the Certificate Program to increase revenue to the department. The form of this expansion will need to be carefully considered as it would require changing it to a graduate level certificate.
Curriculum changes?
Dr. Mead suggested a 1-credit course on professional issues for first year students where they must fulfill all requirements prior to starting Practicum, including background checks, vaccination, etc.
Dr. Hough suggested implementing an orientation meeting with second-year students to reiterate information provided in the first meeting and answer more specific questions about the Praxis, licensure, and certification.
Dr. Hough also suggested a course on behavior management to better equip students who are working with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Dr. Ramos will forward the names of the newly elected officers to Dr. Hough for planning their participation in New Student Orientation
Interdisciplinary/ inter professional directions
The department is currently participating in several inter-professional activities (e.g., Health Sciences Research Day, Distinguished Speaker Series, Interprofessional Workshop). Future plans include NSSLHA’s participation in activities with the other student associations in the College, and research collaborations with Linguistics, Neuro-Cognitive Sciences and the Center for Children and Families.
Space/storage
The College is facing severe space limitations and the department has been asked to give up its storage space. There will be a meeting of the Health Sciences Chairs with Dr. Cornely to discuss this issue

Dr. Hough shared with the faculty that she plans to develop a nicer brochure for the program. More details will be forthcoming

CSD Budget 2014-2015
CSD Space Report (pertaining to CAA Standard 6.2)
At FIU, the scheduling of classrooms overall is conducted by the Space and Scheduling Office at the
university. The focus with this approach is aimed at the most efficient use of space throughout campus.
However, the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing and Health Sciences (NWCNHS), which is the College
in which CSD is housed, does have priority over certain classrooms in our college building which is
Academic Health Center 3 (AHC3). Specifically, all classroom labs which are specific to particular
departments such as CSD, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Athletic Training, and Nursing, are
reserved for that particular discipline. For CSD, it is Room 407. With the increased size of the student
body within CSD over the last few years, additional classroom space which is priority for CSD has been
identified.
1) The NWCNHS has priority scheduling for Rooms 215 and 216, Rooms 205 and 209, and Room
213, prior to any College outside of NWCNHS.
2) Furthermore, CSD has priority scheduling for the large Computer Lab Classrooms (Rooms 211
and 212) on the second floor of the AHC3 after 5:00. This is definitely adequate as CSD
schedules at least 90% of its classes at 5:00PM or later because of the schedules of graduate
student clinical externships which are typically between 8:00AM to 5:00PM.
3) CSD also has priority scheduling for Room 406 after 5:00PM, which again is commensurate with
the CSD scheduling of classes.
Thus, at this time, the CSD Department is adequately and appropriately addressing the space issue
relative to classroom space. At this time, the CSD department always has available classrooms for
