What is a FESTIVAL?

A FESTIVAL is an event or day set to celebrate a specific culture or event and feasting. It is usually organised with a series of performances and acts.

There are all sorts of festivals like the ‘V Festival’ which is a very popular music festival held in the UK. In this kind of festival the audience or public go to a campsite to stay over for a period to 2 days were they watch performances by famous artists.

What is the whole point of a festival?

The whole point of a festival is about entertaining and celebrating and TO JUST HAVE FUN!

Festivals are held for people to explore other cultures and their traditions. Many have purposes , for example ‘LOVE MUSIC HATE RACISM’ this festival is held to bond all races together through the sound of music. Many festivals have an ‘Artistic Policy’ this a rule that a festival hopes to achieve in a festival. For example a festival like ‘ Love Music Hate Racism’ hope to achieve their artistic policy which is to battle to fight against segregation and to become one through music. Where as a festival like the V Festival’s artistic policy is to have fun enjoy the music. The V festival charges money for tickets to enjoy their festival and in ‘Love Music Hate Racism’ is a free festival for everybody to along to.

In East London they hold a festival in Bethnal Green every called the ‘Boishakhi Mela’ this means a yearly festival. In east London the population of Bangladeshi's are very high so they hold this event to remember the cultures of Bangladesh. The Mela consists with famous Bangladeshi singers performing on stage (live music) and dance performances. There are also a whole range of stall were people sell traditional foods and clothes, jewellery etc. They also have a mini funfair for everyone especially for children to enjoy.

every year is ‘Notting hill Carnival’ this carnival takes place on a street in Notting hill were people celebrate the Caribbean culture and food. This is considered to be a local festival in London but is internationally known were people come to perform in spectacular costumes.

LADY FEST TENLady Fest Ten is a non profit festival (this is when they host a

festival who do not intend to make a profit out of the event but to enjoy the main purpose). This festival is held together by volunteers and enthusiasts.

There purpose of the whole festival is to achieve an original platform for iconic, emerging creative artists.

LADY FEST TEN has been held all over the world like Gothenburg (2005), Ottawa(2002), Brighton (2005), Romania (2005), Warsaw (2004) and Torun (2009).

Rio de Jeniero Carnival

This is a carnival that is held 40 days before Easter. The majority are Catholic Christians and abstain from the consumption of meat and poultry, hence the term Carnival. They also abstain from bodily pleasures.

The Rio de Jeniero Carnival is said to be the most extravagant carnival on the globe and celebrated as a profound event. This Carnival is very important to Brazilians because it just about sums up their culture.

Months of preparation go into organising the carnival and especially on the costumes.

The purpose of the carnival is to dance, sing and just have fun with the family and most importantly enjoy watching the street performance and costumes.

How are festivals funded?

The festival all raise from fundraising sponsors and charging tickets. Most Festivals are non – profitable so they only raise enough money for hiring venues, food and equipment. The majority of festivals give all their profits to charities who they are sponsored by. Festivals like Glastonbury are well known for being a ‘Green Festival’ so they actively support the work of these three organisations (Oxfam, Greenpeace and WaterAid).
