4 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Citrix and Cisco extend partnership Cisco and Citrix announced a significant expansion of their successful desktop virtualisation partnership into three strategic areas:  cloud networking, cloud orchestration, and mobile workstyles.

Cisco and Citrix believe the IT industry is on the verge of the next major architectural transition:  the mobile-cloud era. To help enterprise and service provider customers capture the market transition and transform their business models, Cisco and Citrix will collaborate to unify best-of-breed technologies into innovative solutions for the mobile-cloud era.

The expanded partnership will include a significant investment in people and resources to drive market-leading technology innovation, solution integration and validation, customer support, and

joint go-to-market investment on a global basis.

Cisco is evolving its L4-L7 services in data centres and cloud infrastructure with an integrated, multi-services architecture. Cisco Cloud Network Services is an ecosystem-based approach that incorporates best-in-class Cisco and partner application and network services. Bringing these key technologies together into an integrated solution will help enterprise and service provider customers deliver true cloud service automation with deep network- and application-level intelligence to speed service deployments.  As part of the strategy, Cisco and Citrix intend to jointly integrate the Citrix NetScaler application delivery controller (ADC) to seamlessly coexist with other Cisco network

that complete computing facility. When a CIO to goes to a CEO and say they want to simplify our overall IT infrastructure – it’s easier to go with a single vendor like HP where you can bring everything together.”

Emerging regions like the Middle East have become very important to HP’s global strategy as it hopes to pick up market share around the world.

“As you know what’s happening with the worldwide economy, the growth markets are expected to grow significantly higher than the rest of the world. We’re investing more in the Middle East, we’re bringing in more resources, we’re opening up offices across the region and we’re really positioning ourselves for the growth,” Raj said.

“We’re the number two player in the networking space. If you look at the rest of the world where people are bogged down by legacy systems and are used to that method of working, compared to this part of the world, there are far more fresh investments over here and it’s easier for them to make those decisions on TCO.”

and security services, such as Cisco Wide Area Application Services (WAAS) and Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA). The companies also intend to integrate Cisco Nexus 1000V with Citrix XenServer to enable enterprise and service provider customers to build clouds based in part on key open source technology. Cisco will continue to fully support existing customers of its Application Control Engine (ACE) product line and will recommend Citrix NetScaler as an alternative to customers who want to deploy a next-generation ADC.

Cisco and Citrix intend to develop an integrated cloud solution for enterprise and service provider deployments based on the companies’ best-in-class portfolios. This will include the Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS), Cisco Nexus Series switching, and Cisco Open Network Environment (ONE) components, as well as Citrix’s leading cloud orchestration solution — Citrix CloudPlatform, powered by Apache CloudStack.

As part of its participation at GITEX Technology Week, ICT Fund, an initiative by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), today honored Be’tha scholarship program graduates.

Be’tha, an initiative by the ICT Fund, is designed to enhance the

stature and role of the national education sector by aligning scientific scholarship funding with the UAE’s targeted human capital needs. The Be’tha program has dedicated 344 scholarships, and so far enabled 230 Emirati students (220 bachelors and 10

masters) to study in the UAE, USA, Australia and Japan. The Fund is aiming to support 1,000 students within the Be’tha program in the coming years.

H.E. Dr. Abdulqader Al Khayat, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the ICT Fund, said: “The Be’tha

program is designed to encourage UAE youth to enroll in the ICT sector,  part of the ICT Fund’s broader commitment to empower UAE national youth with the best global ICT practices. Today, Be’tha graduates have already proved to be pioneering leaders in their positions in prominent UAE-based organizations.”

Hashem Obaid Al Kaabi, a graduate of Be’tha, said: “The Be’tha program provided us with an outstanding educational experience preparing us to work in the ICT sector, and we are now contributing to the overall growth of the UAE’s ICT industry.”

The Be’tha program comes as part of the ICT Fund and TRA strategy to develop human resources specialized in ICT. ICT Fund has to date funded Be’tha with over AED 179 million.

Teclib demos virtual desktop and management solutionsA specialist in free technology and open source industrialisation, TECLIB has introduced its software and services offer at GITEX 2012. On account of its partnership with Oracle, the company currently uses Virtual Desktop technology, an innovative solution that allows the virtualisation of workstations. TECLIB will also take advantage of the tradeshow to present IT Management, its second key offer, which can be used to manage an entire IT infrastructure using freeware.

Virtual desktop is an innovative

solution used to virtualise several desktops on to one or more servers or within a Cloud environment. With this solution, every user can connect to their desktop using a variety of equipment.

IT management is TECLIB’s second key offer. Made up of the helpdesk solution, the GLPI IT Resources Manager and the Fusion inventory management software, it will manage an entire IT infrastructure, boosted by the Centreon supervision solution, says the company.

It is a freeware, multiplatform solution

(Windows, Mac, Unix, Linux), and manufacturer-independent, featuring bandwidth preservation, leading to cost

savings since the software operates with no paid licence scheme. All solutions are compliant with appropriate standards and are interoperable with other freeware and some proprietary software. They are also independent of operating system publishers.

Teclib is exhibiting at the French pavilion.

“Cyber-espionage and theft has become very common lately. A new cyber-espionage program designed to steal data is causing havoc in Iran and other ME countries, as we speak. In UAE, the business hub of Middle East, cyber-attacks seem to be particularly aimed at banks”, says Parthiban Paramasivam, Senior Software Engineer of ManageEngine, a real-time IT management company at the GITEX Technology Week 2012.

In the backdrop of 72 (out of 100 registered) phishing attacks were against banks in 2011,

the observation looks prudent, especially considering the threat that Trojan Zeus posed to banks across the UAE. Zeus, a Trojan capable of mining and transferring crucial data from bank files to hackers, was tackled soon enough. However, the way it had evolved was a clear indication that cyber-criminals are getting cleverer at such attacks.

“IT security is not just about prevention (of threats) anymore. It is a continuous process, where vigilance is the key. Defining clear access controls, keeping

an eye on the systems where crucial data such as file servers or NetApp Filers are stored and auditing access attempts. This would be a quick way out during the contingency of an attack that beats your antivirus software. And you need to systematise every IT process, re-evaluate it and revamp it. Going by the maxim - the guy with the bigger stick wins”, observes Paramasivam

Paramasivam suggests that key IT operations such as user provisioning and access management be systematized and automated; reports be maintained; and most importantly File Servers or storage devices such as NetApp Filer be constantly audited, and any untoward file access be alerted about. And this entire process should be documented and evaluated from time to time so that there is no room for complacency or errors.

ManageEngine has a wide range of Windows management and security products using which it is easy to systematize IT operations and enhance security. Active Directory management, auditing & security for Windows Infrastructure, Email security and reporting are they key areas addressed by these solutions.
