SALUTE TO 4H 6 The Gardner News, July 29, 2020 Obituaries Evalyn June Dorsey Ellis Evalyn June Ellis, 79, wife of the late Garry Don Ellis of Fountain Valley, Calif., passed away July 20, 2020 at Sunrise of Huntington Beach, Calf. June was born on June 21, 1941, in Kansas City, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Lloyd A. and Nellie (Richardson) Dorsey. When she was only a few months old her father served in the US Navy during WWII. He was stationed in Pearl Har- bor on the US Rigel. June and her mother were living in Hawaii during the attack on Pearl Harbor of Dec. 7, 1941. Her father survived the attack and for their safety she and her mother returned to Kansas where she lived with her mother, her aunt and her cousin Richard during the war. June grew up in Gardner. She graduated from Gardner High School in 1959. She married Garry Ellis on July 30, 1961 and moved to Calififornia. June and Garry lived in Fountain Valley, Calif., for over 40 years, where June was a wife, mother and home- maker. She was a member of Christ Pacific Church. June is survived by her son Jeffrey and his wife Sheri of Issaquah, WA, her daughter Patricia and her husband Dale of Fountain Valley, Calif., her son Daniel and his wife Denette of Dove Canyon, Calif., her daughter Jill and her husband Joshua of Santa Maria, Ca- lif., her grandchildren Ryan Ellis, Katrina Martin, Valerie Ellis, Joy Martin, Destiny Scarlata and Michael Scarlata. She is also survived by her brother Gene Dorsey of Lawrence, Kan., her sis- ter Mary Jane Whittaker of Gardner, and her sister Joan Taylor of Gardner. Due to the Covid19 Pandemic masks will be required. She will be laid to rest next to her hus- band Gary Don Ellis who passed away in 2011. Eugene Francis Stricker Eugene Francis Stricker, 82, Olathe, passed away July 20, 2020 peacefully at his home. Gene was born May 18, 1938 in Spring Hill, Kan.,to Roland and Mary (Bullock) Stricker. He was a lifelong area resident, graduating from Gardner High School in 1956. Gene was the owner of S & S Automotive, Gardner, for over 20 years. He married June Haverfield in Overland Park, Kan., they enjoyed life together for over 40 years. His passions were cars and racing, espe- cially NASCAR, and specifi- cally watching any MOPAR win the race. Gene also en- joyed and spent time partici- pating in auto shows. Gene was talented and a highly skilled genius at bringing cars back to life by painstak- ingly restoring them. His fa- vorite restoration projects were Chrysler automobiles. He was an active partici- pant in the Johnson County Fair parade in Gardner and attended BMW Motorcycle Rallies across the country. Gene loved telling stories while talking cars and very much loved his family and friends. Every now and then, throughout his life, you could find him showing off his dance skills on the dance floor. He will be remem- bered as being a unique, humble, intelligent, funny and driven man. Gene was a member of Divine Mercy (Sacred Heart) Catholic Church, Gardner. Gene was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife June, his daughter Dianna Smith and her husband, James Utt, Leawood, his stepson Doyle Haverfield and his wife Len; siblings: Jerry and Carole Stricker, Gardner, Myrna and David Morrison, Spring Hill, Katie Bond, Nixa, Mo., Larry and Carrie Stricker, Gardner, and Joanne Fruits and Wil Wiering, Olathe; five beautiful grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. He will be deeply missed by all. A Celebration of Life was held on July 25, 2020 at the American Legion in Gardner. Condolences may be left at www.brucefuneralhome.com. Alex Whipple Club reporter The coronavirus pandemic has affected many things in- cluding 4-H. During these tough times, 4-H has had to improvise, adapt and over- come. In April, the Stanley Buccaneer’s 4-H club began holding their monthly meet- ings electronically through Zoom. For the first time since February the 4-H club’s July meeting was held in person (outdoors, adhering to CDC social distancing and mask guidelines). It was nice to be able to talk and catch up with other 4-H members and meet face to face. Despite not being able to meet in person for project meetings, our 4-H members have been hard at work on their projects preparing for the Johnson County Fair. Elizabeth Lang, senior, stated, “The pandemic caused me to have a lot of time on my hands, so I was able to focus on each of them more.” Stanley Buccaneer’s members are diligently working on a vari- ety of fair projects. To quote the 1964 Bob Dylan song “The Times They Are a Changin’,” but with change comes exciting new beginnings. While right now things may look bleak, 4-H will evolve for the next gen- eration bringing them lots of joy. Just because 4-H isn’t the same as when we grew up doesn’t mean it can’t change to better suit the next genera- tion in these different times. 4-H will always embody “making the best better” no matter what changes occur.
