your money given the choice?

Why Implement a 5S Program?

Page 9: 6 s itroduction

9

Nobody likes to live in a squalid environment

Why Implement a 5S Program?

Page 10: 6 s itroduction

10

But for some reason people seem to tolerate it

more so at work!

Why Implement a 5S Program?

Page 11: 6 s itroduction

11

World class companies operate in world class

conditions!

Page 12: 6 s itroduction

12

I want this place tidying now or else

It is often said that people only

tackle housekeeping issues

when:

“they have been kicked by a 2

star general”

Page 13: 6 s itroduction

13

Or

“A 4 Star General is

about to visit”

Page 14: 6 s itroduction

14What can we hope to achieve?

Reduction in accidents

Reductions in wasted time looking for parts/ materials/ drawings/ tools/ each

other

„Cleaning is Inspection‟ finds potential failures before they occur

Increased customer and employer / employee confidence in the work place

An improved environment for everyone!

What can 6S Deliver?

Results of Sheet 1

The following is an exercise to demonstrate the importance of basic

work place organisation and highlight the principles of 6S.

Sheet 1 - Usually people will manage to circle anywhere

between 5 and 25, but all should agree that the task

is not straight forward.

The following is an exercise to demonstrate the importance of basic

work place organisation and highlight the principles of 6S.

Sheet 2 - The first step of work place management or 6S has

now been applied and all the unnecessary items

have been removed. You now have 1 minute again

to circle all the numbers from 1 to 48 in ascending

order.

Results of Sheet 2The following is an exercise to demonstrate the importance of basic

work place organisation and highlight the principles of 6S.

Sheet 2 - Now that the first Step of the 6 S‟s has been

applied the task should become much easier.

As we have gotten rid of all the unnecessary items

that aren‟t required to complete the exercise i.e. all

the numbers above 48, people will generally

manage to circle between 5 and 10 more numbers

than they managed before.

This should help demonstrate that when we

remove clutter, it allows people to be more efficient.

Instructions

The following is an exercise to demonstrate the importance of basic

work place organisation and highlight the principles of 6S.

Sheet 3 - The second step of work place management has

now been implemented, set limits and locations.

What you will find is 1 will appear in the top left box,

2 in the top right box, 3 in the lower left box, 4 in the

lower right box, 5 in the top left box and so on.

Again you now have 1 minute to circle all the

numbers from 1 to 48 in ascending order.

Results of Sheet 3

The following is an exercise to demonstrate the importance of basic work

place organisation and highlight the principles of 6S.

Sheet 3 - Now that the second step of the 6S‟s has been applied

the task should again have become much simpler.

People will usually manage to circle at least another 10

or more numbers than on their previous attempt.

Now that we have „set limits and locations‟ people have a

frame work and instructions on where to find the objects

(in this case numbers) that they are trying to locate.

Again by the fact that people have managed to circle

more number should help demonstrate how 6S can help

improve efficiency

Page 25: 6 s itroduction

25

Instructions

The following is an exercise to demonstrate the importance of basic

work place organisation and highlight the principles of 6S.

Sheet 4 - Now the 3rd and 4th steps of work place

management have been implemented. Step 3 is the

Shine, so all the numbers have been

tidied into well arranged rows. Step 4 is the

standardisation of the numbers so they are all now

the same size and font. Again you now have 1

minute to circle all the numbers from 1 to 48 in

ascending order.

Results of Sheet 4Sheet 4 - As can be seen when you attempt the exercise for

the last time you can not possibly complete it

because No.37 is missing.

No. 37 has been missing throughout all of the

exercises its just NOT easy, obvious or visually

simple to notice before carrying out the steps of

basic work place management.

It is only by doing this sort of basic work place management and

then applying Step 5 the discipline of adhering to the previous 4

steps that these types of simple problems will be flagged up early

enough for us to take action before we cause ourselves or more

importantly our customers problems.
