Canadian Guiding Badges And Insignia Rangers 6: Rangers Introduction Rangers, Cadets, Junior Leaders Older girls in Guiding (generally 16+ years of age) have had programs developed for them over the years. These girls and their several programs were sometimes referred to collectively as the Senior Branches. This section records the badges and insignia of these senior groups of girl members. Rangers In 1914, a program was started for girls who were too old for a regular Guide Company, but did not want to leave Guiding. These older girls were called Senior Guides, and they were able to earn advanced badges, either designed especially for them or else modified versions of Guide badges (indicated by the words “Senior” or “First Class”). The badges for Senior Guides were similar to the Guide badges, but with a red ring replacing blue in the designs. In 1921, these older girls were given the name Rangers. They were sometimes referred to as Land Rangers to distinguish them from the other Ranger groups (see below). In 1920, a parallel group of older girls became Sea Guides, with activities and badges geared to their specialized interests. Sea Guides were renamed Sea Rangers in 1927. In 1954, a third group, Air Rangers, was started in Canada to accommodate older girls who wished to pursue an interest in aeronautics. [Air Rangers had been in England for more than 15 years prior to this.] In 1969, with the change of the Ranger program, Sea and Air Rangers became regular Ranger groups, who could “specialize in sea or air activities…where facilities are available”. Introduction
Rangers, Cadets, Junior Leaders
Older girls in Guiding (generally 16+ years of age) have had programs developed for them over the years. Canadian Guiding Badges And Insignia Rangers
In 2008 Cadets and Junior Leaders were added to the Ranger section, and all senior groups became known as Rangers. Cadets Cadets (sometimes referred to as Cadet Rangers) were organized by 1919 in England in a plan to train older girls to be leaders in the Guiding movement. Sometime before 1925 the Cadet section was introduced in Canada. Cadets typically did not work for proficiency badges but they were permitted to do so if they wished. In 2008 the Cadet section was discontinued and Cadets joined the Ranger section where they could continue to pursue their emphasis on leadership training as desired. Junior Leaders In 1981 recognition was given to the number of girls who were helping with Spark, Brownie, Guide, or Pathfinder groups, but who chose not to be Rangers or Cadets. These helpers became known officially as Junior Leaders and in time they acquired their own insignia. In 2008, the Junior Leaders became part of the Ranger section and the term Junior Leaders was discontinued. Eras of Ranger badges are: 1. Early years; circa 1914-1921. Badges were white felt background, with navy images and a red encircling ring. 2. Circa 1921-1931. Badges were navy felt ground, with red images and encircling ring. 3. Circa 1931-1945 Badges were navy felt or cotton, with red images and the text “GIRL GUIDES” in red, in a red encircling ring. With the change in the Ranger program in 1945, proficiency badges were discontinued.
