Introduction 3
Introduction
This document describes how to unpack and install the DXi8500 un-rackedsystem.
The DXi8500 is a disk appliance designed to work with leading backupapplications. DXi8500 systems are available with 20TB200TB native usablecapacity (with 1TB drives) or 40TB200TB (with 2TB drives).
Array and Expansion Modules
Array modules and Expansion modules contain SATA hard drives in a RAID 6configuration. Each module (Array or Expansion) contains 16 hard drives andprovides a usable capacity of 10TB (with 1TB drives) or 20TB (with 2TB drives).
New DXi8500 Systems Shipped from the Factory
Customers can purchase DXi8500 systems with all 1TB drives or all 2TB drives, but not a combination of both.
When Using 1TB Drives
Up to 8 Array modules can be added in the base rack and up to two additionalArray modules can be added in an expansion rack. After all of the Array moduleshave been added, from 1 to 10 Expansion modules can be added to anexpansion rack (see Figure 29). Each module (Array or Expansion) is configuredwith 1TB drives, up to the maximum usable capacity of 200TB for the system. For detailed information, see Table 2 on page 8.
When Using 2TB Drives
Up to 8 Array modules can be added in the base rack, and up to two additional
Array modules can be added in an expansion rack. Note that no Expansionmodules are used with 2TB drive configurations (see Figure 30). Each Arraymodule is configured with 2TB drives up to the maximum usable capacity of200TB for the system. For detailed information, see Table 3 on page 14.
Note: For any DXi8500 system configuration, the maximum native usablecapacity cannot exceed 200TB.
DXi8500 CapacityExpansion Strategy
Customers can add capacity to their DXi8500 system by adding Array modulesor Expansion modules. The capacity expansion strategy is to add all Arraymodules first and then begin adding Expansion modules.

The expansion rack for DXi8500 systems using 2TB drives can bepopulated with two PDUs and up to two Array modules, but no Expansionmodules (see Figure 30).
Note: The following figures illustrate the recommended installation positionsfor the DXi8500 components. It is possible to install the DXi8500components in different locations within a rack, however Quantum
recommends keeping the additional rack space available for futurecomponent upgrades.
Note: Components installed in the customers second rack may deviate fromthe recommended installation defined in this guide. There may beother components already installed in another rack in the customersdata center that would require different locations for the components.

Powering On the DXi8500 and Initial Configuration
Before the DXi8500 is operational, you must power on the system and configurethe system by completing the Getting Started wizard.
Powering on theDXi8500
The DXi8500 must be powered on in a specific order:
Note: Before continuing with this procedure, ensure that all power switcheson every component are off.
1 If the optional PDUs are installed, turn on the power switches located on theback of the base and expansion racks (see Figure 57).
Figure 57 Turning on the
Power Distribution Units Power switches
Wait two minutes for Ethernet and Fibre Channel switches to boot.
2 For DXi8500 systems using 1TB drives, turn on both power switches on eachExpansion module one at a time, waiting 30 seconds before powering onthe next Expansion module (see Figure 58).
Note: Do NOT turn on the Array modules. Only the Expansion modules, ifusing, are powered on at this time. Expansion modules are notused with DXi8500 systems using 2TB Array module drives.

7 Replace the front bezel on the System Node.
Note: The System Node takes approximately 15 minutes to boot for a
Base system (20TB 40TB) and up to 60 minutes for a full system(200TB). During the boot process, different messages display onthe System Node LCD panel in this order: Booting, Attention, andNormal. The last status on the LCD panel does NOT indicate thatthe system has completed its booting process; it indicates that theSystem Node has booted successfully. After the System Node hascompleted the boot process, continue to the next section,Completing the Getting Started Wizard.
Completing the Getting
Started Wizard
After the various DXi8500 system components have been powered on, you are
ready to configure the DXi8500 system, which consists of the following steps:
Logging on to the system.
Accepting the license agreement.
Setting the network configuration.
Setting the date and time.
Confirming the initial configuration.
Follow these steps to configure the DXi8500:
1 Connect an Ethernet cable to port ETH1 (port 21) on the back of the SystemNode and to the service laptop.
2 On the service laptop, do the following:
Set the network settings to 10.17.21.200, which allows the system toaccess the DXi8500 default network address.
Launch a web browser, and enter 10.17.21.1 in the browser addressfield.
Note: For Web browsers, the DXi8500 supports Internet Explorer 7 orhigher or Firefox 3 or higher.

7 Under Configure Network Settings, select the Basic option.
With basic network configuration, all 1GbE or all 10GbE Ethernet ports arebonded together in a single network interface (logical port). All types ofnetwork traffic (replication, management, and data) are routed over thisinterface. Because there is only one network interface, only a single group ofnetwork settings are required.
Note: Refer to the Quantum DXi8500 Users Guide(6-67030), which islocated on the documentation CD, for information about the
Custom or Segmented network options. Before you can select theCustom option, you must configure the DXi using the Basic optionand restart the DXi.
8 Under General, enter the following information:
Caution: Make sure you enter the correct IP address information andthat you write this information down. If you enter the incorrectIP address information and reboot, you will not be able toaccess the system.
a Enter the Hostname used to identify the DXi8500 system.
b Enter the IP Address, the Netmask, and the Default Gateway(optional) you want to use to join the DXi8500 to your network.
c (Optional) In the Domain Suffix Search List box, enter the local domainto search first when resolving domain names.
The domain suffix is a single domain name. The domain name maycontain only letters (AZ), numbers (09), dots (.), and hyphens (-).

d (Optional) In the Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary DNS IP Addressboxes, enter the IP address of up to three DNS servers used to resolvedomain names and translate them into IP addresses.
Note: You must specify a DNS IP address if you plan to use hostnameformat when configuring an NTP time server, outgoing e-mailserver, replication sources and targets, and other information.
9 Under Network Interfaces, select BOND ALL 1GB (not segmented) orBOND ALL 10GB (not segmented).
If you choose to bond all 1GbE ports together, then the 10GbE ports are notused. Similarly, if you choose to bond all 10GbE ports together, then the1GbE ports are not used.
There are two different configurations of DXi8500:
4 x 1GbE ports and 2 x 10GbE ports (Table 16)
4 x 1GbE ports and 4 x 10GbE ports (Table 17)
Note: For customer-specific requirements, refer to the site survey for orthe best practices documents.
