CRAYONS TO COFFEE CUPS
Lord, We Are Waiting. But Yet What Are We Waiting For?
As we fast approach this Advent Season, we are reminded in many ways that we are waiting for the birth
of the Messiah, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. Yet, we live in a world
where we are tempted to skip over Advent and jump right into the exhilaration of Christmas Day. After all,
the rest of the United Sates began to push Christmas cookies, Christmas commercials, Santa Claus,
Christmas trees and so on and so on back in October. Oh don’t get me wrong, for I love to make and eat
Christmas cookies (maybe too much), listening to Christmas music, wrapping gifts, decorating the house,
purchasing another Christmas tree that is always too big to get through the front door, exchanging gifts
with family and friends and watching my favorite Christmas movies, “It’s A Wonderful Life” and “A Christ-
mas Story.” All of those help to make magnificent memories and traditions that are passed down from
generation to generation. But, something is lost when we rush through the reflective season of Advent, as
we scurry about decorated shops trying to check off every name on our lists. Because we have heard the
Christmas story in a variety of settings and countless times, our ears and hearts become numb. Do we
hear it with our ears or do we hear it with our heart and soul? Yet, we cannot deny that when we take time
to reflect on the events that led up to the birth of Jesus, a sense of awe returns to our hearts. The perfect
example of this is the formal “Proclamation of the Birth of Christ” which is recited during the Liturgy of the
Hours at the Christmas Eve Mass. The following text, gives us the birth of Jesus within the salvation histo-
ry: begins with the creation of the world, mentions certain key events in the history of the people of Israel
and concludes with the birth of Jesus during the Roman Era. “The Twenty-fifth Day of December, when ag-
es beyond number had run their course from the creation of the world, when God in the beginning created
heaven and earth, and formed man in his own likeness; when century upon century had passed since the
Almighty set his bow in the clouds after the Great Flood, as a sign of covenant and peace; in the twenty-
first century since Abraham, our father in faith, came out of Ur of the Chaldees; in the thirteenth century
since the People of Israel were led by Moses in the Exodus from Egypt; around the thousandth year since
David was anointed King; in the sixty-fifth week of the prophecy of Daniel; in the one hundred and ninety-
fourth Olympiad; in the year seven hundred and fifty-two since the foundation of the City of Rome; in the
forty-second year of the reign of Caesar Octavian Augustus, the whole world being at peace, JESUS
CHRIST, eternal God and Son of the eternal Father, desiring to consecrate the world by his most loving
presence, was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and when nine months had passed since his conception, was
born of the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem of Judah, and was made man: The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ
according to the flesh.” So again, what are we waiting for? Is it the humble arrival in a manger, that with
it brings joy, hope and anticipation? During this hectic season, we have to remind ourselves to keep our
ears, hearts, minds and souls open to the warmth and love of Jesus. The Advent season helps us to do
this. By keeping a more spiritual focus it helps to alleviate the hustle and bustle of the secular Christmas
season, as well as, an opportunity to mature in our faith in God. I think the Grinch said it best: “It came
without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puz-
zled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas,
he thought, doesn't come from a store? What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more

Let us prepare, this upcoming Advent Season, for all of us to take the Great Adventure together.

SPECIAL DAYS AND CELEBRATIONS FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER
Month of November: Extension of Certain Plenary Indulgences
In the month of November, the Church has two traditional means of obtaining a plenary indulgence for the
souls in Purgatory. The first is to visit a cemetery and pray for the dead during the Octave of All Saints’ Day
(Nov. 1-8). The second is connected to the Feast of All Souls’ Day (Nov. 2), and can be received by those
who piously visit a church or oratory on that day and recite the Our Father and the Creed. This year, the
Vatican has decreed that these plenary indulgences can be obtained on any day in November to reduce
crowds.
November 22: Solemnity of Christ the King
The Solemnity of Christ the King is a fitting moment in the liturgical year to promote the Church’s teaching
on religious freedom. The USCCB’s Committee for Religious Liberty has prepared materials to help edu-
cate the faithful about this Solemnity
The Solemnity of Christ the King was instituted by Pope Pius XI with the encyclical Quas primas. The Holy
Father speaks directly to the problem of what he referred to as “anti-clericalism,” by which he meant the
attitude of those who were seeking to eliminate Christian influence. We see a version of anti-clericalism
today, for example, when it is suggested that belief in Catholic teachings renders a person unfit for a judi-
cial appointment. When our nation is beset by civic unrest, racial tension, and a pandemic, we do well to
turn to Our Lord, who reigns over every people and nation.
Sunday Missals for 2020-2021

prevent groups of people gathering in
the vestibule, you will be able to obtain

building.
