When 6th grader, Sidney Mattson gave her speech in hopes of being elected Stanberry El-ementary Student Council president one of the points in her speech was to begin a service project to collect pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House. Her goal of being elected became a reality and the collecting began. With the help of the rest of the student council, posters were made and posted around the school to promote the idea of bringing collected tabs to school. A collection tub was placed in a central location and the do-nations began. In January the council noticed a lull in donations and decided to set some goals and as each goal was made a reward would be given to all students for their help. A fi nal goal of 60 pounds was set and the cutoff date was May 1st. New life was breathed into the program and the students reach the fi rst goal of 40 lbs., then 50 lbs. As May 1st rolled closer and closer the council knew they were so close but it looked as if they might not be able to make the 60 lbs. Then, on the last day of collection, a surprise donation rolled in and the goal was not only met it was exceeded. As a fi -nal weigh in was done the students had collected 140 lbs. of aluminum tabs. An email was sent to Childrenʼs Mercy Hospital to let them know we had a donation for them and what was the best way to get them to the proper place.
Student Council Offi cersLeft to Right: Hailey Stoll, Brelyn Cowen, Sydney Mattson, Mr. Alan Lupert,
Braylee Woods, & Hunter Johnson. Boxes are full of pop tabsMr. Alan Lupert replied and agreed to come by our school and pick them up. On May 16th Mr. Lupert was the guest of honor at an assembly where the tabs were presented to him. He told the students that what they had done was remarkable. They have many schools in the Kansas City area collect for the house and our donation exceeded what larger schools do. He also brought the drawing of the new Ronald McDonald house being built in Kansas City. When it is completed there will be 3 homes in Kansas City. The homes are fully occupied most days and up to 1,000 families have to be turned away due to lack of availability of rooms. What started as an idea in Sydneyʼs mind became a reality due to persistence and planning. The students are planning to continue the project and invite the community to help. Please collect those aluminum tabs and either send them to school with a student or drop them off at the Elementary Principalʼs offi ce anytime.
YOUR DONATION BEGINS 1 TAB AT A TIME AND GROWS TO HELP SO MANY SICK CHILDREN.
