Page 2: 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 5th · This weekend we celebrate the 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time and we continue to read from the Gospel of St. Matthew. Jesus taught his disciples

From the Desk of Father Ed:

Dear Parishioners, This weekend we celebrate the 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time and we continue to read from the Gospel of St. Matthew. Jesus taught his disciples from the mountain top. He told them, “You are the salt of the earth…(and) the light of the world.” Our Lord teaches us this weekend with the same words. As disciples of Jesus, we too are called to be salt and light in the world. One of my younger brothers would always love to add salt to his meals and eat salty pretzels. When the pretzels were almost finished he would eat the leftover salt at the bottom of the pretzel bag. Salt gives flavor to our food, makes it more enjoyable to eat and is a natural preservative. Jesus told his disciples that they are the salt of the earth; they give flavor to those who are hungry for the truth. They bring joy to those who are willing to turn from a life of sin and seek after the One who feeds us with his Body and Blood. A good cook knows just the right amount of salt to add to a meal. In one of my previous assignments we had a part-time cook. She was an excellent cook and the meals were delicious. As she was getting older she developed lung cancer and was being treated with chemotherapy, which often affects the taste buds. On several occasions the food had so much salt in it that you could not eat it. As disciples of Jesus we need to know, like a good cook, just the right amount of salt. How often when a parent tries preaching to their teenager or young adult child they turn further away from the faith or when someone walks in with a Bible under their arm people scatter. To be the salt of the earth we need the help of the Holy Spirit. We have to pray often to the Holy Spirit asking Him for the courage to speak and the wisdom to know what to say or to even remain silent. We need the help of the Holy Spirit to fully embrace the life of discipleship so that others may see the light of Christ within us and know that we are Christians. Jesus reminds us today that we are the “Salt of the earth…(and) the light of the world.” Our Lady Queen of Peace, pray for us, Father Ed, Administrator
