continental crust oceanic crust

made of granite- incl. continents

made of basalt- incl. ocean floor-

6-11 km thick

Ways scientists study Earth’s interior

1. study mantle material from cracks

2. measure earthquake vibrations-

seismograph3. Test materials to see how

respond to heat & pressure

The Earth Bowl• The homework monitor will need to get a tray which

contains the following: A plastic baggie, with graham

cracker.Nilla wafer cookies

A container of black cherry Jell-O

A container of lemon Jell-OA spoonA bowl

DO NOT TOUCH ANY OF THE MATERIALS AFTER YOU HAVE RECEIVED THEM. WAIT UNTIL I

EXPLAIN WHAT TO DO.

Page 30: 5th Grade Ch 9 Lesson 1 What Is The Structure Of Earth

The Steps to Making the Layers!

1) Put Nilla wafer in the bottom of the cup.

2) Next, lemon Jell-O and put it in the bowl.

3) Then, put black cherry Jell-O on top of the lemon Jell-O.

4) Last, you will need the plastic baggie containing graham crackers. Break the graham crackers up in the bag. DO NOT POUND TOO HARD! YOU DON’T WANT THE BAG TO BREAK! Sprinkle the crumbs on top of the black cherry Jell-O.

Page 31: 5th Grade Ch 9 Lesson 1 What Is The Structure Of Earth

You have now made the Layers of the Earth.

*The Crust (graham crackers)*The Mantle (black cherry)* The Outer Core (orange)* The Outer Core (orange)

* The Inner Core (Nilla wafer)

Draw a picture of it in your notebook, labeling it with the

name of the layer and the ingredient.
