Your name

Activity-pg. 80 What is your lung capacity?

Page 3: 5th Grade-Ch. 3 Lesson 2 What is the Respiratory System

Lung Capacity Activity• Question-How much air can I breathe in or

blow out?• Purpose: To determine how much air different

people can hold in their lungs• Hypothesis: If I blow a bubble as large as I

can, then the volume of air in the bubblewill be the same as the volume of airthat was in my lungs.

• Materials: black trash bag, bubble solution, plastic straw, metric ruler, masking tape

Page 4: 5th Grade-Ch. 3 Lesson 2 What is the Respiratory System

• Procedure: on pgs. 80-81 in science book

• Conclusion: I breathed out _______ of air. Compared to other students at my table, I breathed out (more or less) air.

respiratory system:• Carries gases between outside air & blood

• Many parts coated w/ mucus=

sticky, thick fluid that traps

dust, germs & other things in air

Page 6: 5th Grade-Ch. 3 Lesson 2 What is the Respiratory System

trachea• tube that carries air from larynx lungs

• leads to 2 branches (bronchi) goes in lungs

Page 7: 5th Grade-Ch. 3 Lesson 2 What is the Respiratory System

bronchioles•small tubes in lungs

Page 8: 5th Grade-Ch. 3 Lesson 2 What is the Respiratory System

larynx• vocal cords stretch across larynx

• voice= vocal cords vibrate

Page 9: 5th Grade-Ch. 3 Lesson 2 What is the Respiratory System

air sacs (alveoli)• thin walled pouches in lungs

• oxygen enters blood & carbon dioxide leaves thru. capillaries

capillary

Page 10: 5th Grade-Ch. 3 Lesson 2 What is the Respiratory System

diaphragm• dome shaped muscle that forms bottom of chest

• inhale (breathe in)- moves

• exhale (breathe out)- moves

Page 11: 5th Grade-Ch. 3 Lesson 2 What is the Respiratory System

cilia• Tiny, hairlike structures on cells in linings

of many parts of respiratory system

Are vocal cords located inside your larynx,

trachea, or esophagus?

Page 18: 5th Grade-Ch. 3 Lesson 2 What is the Respiratory System

The vocal cords are located inside your larynx.

Page 19: 5th Grade-Ch. 3 Lesson 2 What is the Respiratory System

When you inhale, which direction does

your diaphragm move?

Page 20: 5th Grade-Ch. 3 Lesson 2 What is the Respiratory System

The diaphragm pulls downward.
