    International Standard

    Organisation (iso) ISO, which is located in Switzerland, is a non-governmental

    organization established in 1947.

    This organization mainly function to develop voluntarytechnical standards that aim in making the development,manufacture and supply of goods and services moreefficiently, safe and clean.

    The ISO took up the responsibility for drawing up a newEnvironmental Standard series ISO 14000, with the help ofTechnical committee TC 207.

    This attempt was approved by European Commissionthrough the recommendation of CEN(Committee Europeande Normalization), which is European Union StandardizationBod .

    EMS demands a mechanism formeasuring and evaluation for which aprocess has to be evolved that involves

    testing and verification.

    Such a process must be an ongoingprocess to identify environmental

    performance indicators that areverifiable.

    Also, for regular monitoring, the

    companies must establish a system andprocedure for determining complianceand conformance with law and rules and

    regulations.

    At Review stage, the organisation has tothink in terms of continual improvements ofenvironmental performance.

    Review is very important because itundertakes an in-depth analysis of all theissues of environmental concern.

    Reviews must go beyond the stage ofcompliance. It must pay full attention toimplementation of objectives set out by theorganisation.

    Issues to be discussed in the process ofreviews are:

    i. Sustainability of environmental policy.ii. Recommendations of audit report.

    iii.New regulations.

    ISO 14020

    The ISO 14020 family covers threetypes of labeling schemes:

    i. Type I is a multi-attribute labeldeveloped by a third party;

    ii.Type II is a single-attribute label

    developed by the producer;iii.Type III is an eco-label whose

    awarding is based on a full life-cycle
