TRACERCOTM Intrinsically Safe Radiation Monitors TRACERCOTM T201: Intrinsically Safe Radiation Contamination Monitor The potential for individual or environmental contamination, exists wherever unsealed radioactive materials are being transported or manipulated and might arise in a wide variety of operations relating to Oil and Gas Exploration and Production and Minerals Processing. The TRACERCO™ T201 Contamination Monitor was the first commercially available intrinsically safe contamination monitor, designed to meet the challenge of combining operational reliability under adverse conditions with excellent sensitivity, intrinsic safety, ruggedised construction and a number of additional key features, which simply make life easier for the worker. TRACERCOTM T202: Intrinsically Safe Radiation Dose Rate Monitor Radioactive materials are employed routinely in industry to facilitate a wide range of measurements including Process Level Control, Fluid Separation and Non-Destructive Testing. In order to protect the workforce from exposure and to ensure compliance with relevant legislation, radiation doserates must be carefully monitored and controlled. The TRACERCO™ Radiation Monitor has been specifically designed to combine intrinsic safety with ruggedised but lightweight construction and provides additional key operational features such as personal dose integration and peak doserate memory. TRACERCOTM Radiation Monitors TRACERCOTM T401: Radiation Contamination Monitor This monitor combines the same high level of functionality and environmental tolerance normally associated with the T201 and provides a highly cost effective alternative where intrinsic safety is not a consideration. The instrument is particularly suited to the detection of radioactive contamination which can arise in a variety of industries where man-made or naturally occurring isotopes are processed, including Nuclear Power, Land Remediation, Research and Development and Medicine. The TRACERCO™ T401 Contamination Monitor has been designed to meet the challenge of combining operational reliability with excellent sensitivity and a number of additional key features such as, direct surface ability mode and peak reading to simply make life easier for the worker. This monitor provides a non intrinsically safe alternative to the T202 but retains the same high level of functionality and robust construction for field operation. The instrument has been engineered for use in a wide variety of industrial applications where the presence of radioactive materials creates the potential for individual exposure and establishes a requirement for doserate monitoring. The TRACERCO™ T402 Radiation Monitor has been specifically designed to be lightweight but robust and comfortable when used over extended periods in the field. It provides additional key operational features such as personal dose integration and peak dose rate memory. TRACERCOTM T403: Radiation Contamination Monitor It has been identified that there is a requirement for the handling and interim storage of NORM contaminated tubing and materials arising from offshore oil activities. The TRACERCO™ T403 Contamination Monitor has been designed to meet the challenge of combining operational reliability under adverse conditions with excellent sensitivity and ruggedised construction. The detector probe is attached to 10m of cable. This modification allows the monitor to be used to survey internal surface contamination levels on pipes and drains upto 10m away from the body of the monitor. The T403 is supplied with an extension pole kit capable of securely deploying the detector probe during monitoring operations. The kit comprises 11 lengths of flexible polypropylene tubing and an inter-connector capable of linking the detector assembly to the extension pole. TRACERCOTM Mud Monitor Confirm radioactive source integrity during LWD using the TRACERCO™ Mud Monitor. Do not risk radiation exposure. Use the TRACERCO™ Mud Monitor to protect your crew! During drilling operations a radioactive source is often used to log reservoir properties. Incidents have occurred where the radioactive source has been damaged by the drill bit resulting in contamination of the drilling mud and the mud tank leading to potential radiation exposure of workers. Previously, drilling specialists have been unaware of this occurrence! To ensure protection of crew and equipment when using a radioactive source Tracerco has developed the TRACERCO™ Mud Monitor. At present this is used by all major drilling companies to ensure safe working conditions are maintained. The TRACERCO™ Mud Monitor is intrinsically safe (has been tested and certified for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, zones 0, 1 and 2). The instrument is easily clamped to the outside of the mud circulation system via the powerful magnet provided. A sensitive detector links with the directional drilling control system. The instrument continuously monitors background radiation levels. The TRACERCO™ T405 (designed in partnership with John Caunt Scientific Ltd) is a portable battery-powered neutron survey instrument that provides ambient dose equivalent measurements of neutron radiation from thermal to 14 MeV. The instrument adopts the key Tracerco principals of simple functionality, robust construction and is ideally suited to field surveys in harsh environments. It borrows heavily from the existing nuclear industry standard NMS017 range from John Caunt Scientific Ltd. The T405 can be used for dose rate and dose measurements and for neutron counting in the following 8 modes of operation: Dose rate, Accumulated dose, Count rate, 100 second count, 300 second count, 600 second count, Variable timer and Variable count. Switching between any mode is as easy as pressing a button. Furthermore, standard working levels are clearly marked on the OLED display, making it easier for the user to instantly access their whereabouts in the local working environment.

The instrument utilises a 208mm diameter polyethylene sphere moderator with a centrally located He-3 neutron detector and electronics housed within a rugged IP65 rated enclosure. Data is displayed on a digital OLED display. All user operations are carried out with two push button mode switches and a rotary on/off switch. A serial port allows calibration factors to be changed, though it is recommended this only be performed by the manufacturer. Also from the serial port a TTL pulse output is provided for connection to an external counter.

The Tracerco Contamination Monitor Check Source provides an invaluable safety test in providing reassurance to the operator. TRACERCOTM Radiation Monitor Accessories Extension Clamp Kit for Radiation Dose Rate Monitor The T202 and T402 dose rate radiation monitors utilise robust Geiger-Mueller tube detector technology for the measurement of X and Gamma radiation. The monitors’ peak measurement function provides the capability to record the highest dose rate the instrument has been exposed to during each period of use. Used in conjunction with the T202 / T402 Extension Clamp Kit, the peak measurement mode allows the operator to assess levels of radiation exposure remotely, thus limiting the exposure of workers.
The Extension Clamp Kit also allows the operator to assess the radiation field in difficult to access areas, reducing the time taken to carry out routine source checks. The two-piece clamp is secured around the monitor using the Allen key provided allowing the segmental extension pole to be screwed into the base of the clamp. The segmental extension pole can be increased to 2m by adding extra pole lengths. The extension pole and clamp are suitable for use in hazardous areas, zones 0, 1 & 2. • Product Code: MSEC01

Tracerco personnel involved in monitor testing, repair and calibration are fully trained and supervised by a number of members of staff appointed as Qualified Persons under Regulation 19(3) of the Ionising Radiation Regulations. TRACERCOTM Radiation Contamination Monitors conform to European Standard EN60325:2004 and TRACERCOTM Radiation Doserate Monitors to EN60846:2004. Tests involving contamination monitor response to levels of alpha or beta radiation are carried out using a range of large surface area traceable sources of radioactivity. The reference radionuclides for alpha radiation are Americium-241 or Plutonium-239. The reference radionuclides for beta radiation testing are based on a range of beta max values and include Chlorine-36, Carbon-14, Strontium / Yttrium-90 and Promethium-147. Tests involving instrument response to specified radiation dose rates are carried out on a special calibration facility that allows the instrument to be exposed to a range of radiation dose equivalent values from Caesium-137 and Americium-241. Independent verification of the calibration facility shows that over the full range capability, the Ambient Dose Equivalent Rate deviation from 1/r2 is less than 2% relative for the sources of Caesium-137 and less than 5% for the source Americium-241. Tracerco has established monitor repair facilities where trained and experienced staff are available to carry out speedy and effective repairs on a wide range of instruments. In particular, staff have been validated for repairs to the Tracerco range of instrinsically safe radiation monitors, ensuring that the product retains the conformity to approved specification and the intrinsic safety feature is not compromised.

Monitor Calibration, Retest, Servicing & Repair Current legislation establishes a statutory requirement that, as a minimum, all operational radiation monitors are subject to annual inspection and testing. Tracerco provides a professional service for the repair, testing and re-calibration of gamma dose rate and alpha/beta contamination monitors to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.

Radiation monitors are retested, and where necessary calibrated, in accordance with the requirements laid down in “The Examination, Testing and Calibration of Portable Radiation Protection Instruments - Measurements and Good Practice Guide,” produced by the National Physical Laboratory. The operation of the Monitor Calibration and Repair Service is accredited to ISO9001:2000 and BS EN 13980:2002.
