ADD GASOLINE
• Fill fuel tank. Use fresh, clean, regularunleaded gasoline. (Use of leaded
. gasoline will increase carbon and leadoxide deposits and reduce valve life.
IMPORTANT: When operating in tempera-tures below 32°F (0°C), use fresh, clean, winter grade gasoline to help insure goodcold weather starting.WARNING: Experience indicates that alco-hol blended fuels (called gasohol or usingethanol or methanol) can attract moisturewhich leads to separation and formation ofacids during storage. Acidic gas can dam-age the fuel system of an engine while instorage. To avoid engine problems, thefuel system should be emptied beforestorage of 30 days or longer. Drain thegas tank, start the engine and let it rununtil the fuel lines and carburetor areempty. Use fresh fuel next season. SeeStorage section of this manual for addition-al information. Never use engine or carbu-retor cleaner products in the fuel tank orpermanent damage may occur.
10
,_kCAUTION; Fill to within 1/2 inch of topof fuel tank to prevent spills and to allowfor fuel expansion. If gasoline is acciden-tally spilled, move machine away fromarea of spill. Avoid creating any source ofignition until gasoline vapors have disap-peared.Do not overfill. Wipe off any spilled oil orfuel. Do not store, spill or use gasolinenear an open flame.
TO START ENGINE
,_CAUTION: Keep tine control in "OFF"position when starting engine. When starting engine for the first time or ifengine has run out of fuel, it will take extrapulls of the recoil starter to move fuel fromthe tank to the engine.= Make sure spark plug wire is properly
connected and access cover is com-pletely closed to create proper seal.
o Move shift lever indicator to "N" (neutral)position.
o Place throttle control in "FAST" position.o Turn fuel shut-off valve to "ON" position.o Push stop switch to "ON" position.o Move choke control to full "CHOKE"
position. Grasp recoil starter handle withone hand and grasp tiller handle withother hand. Pull rope out slowly untilengine reaches start of compressioncycle (rope will pull slightly harder at thispoint).

° If engine fires but does not start, movechoke control to half choke position. Pullrecoil starter handle until engine starts.
• When engine starts, slowly move chokecontrol to "RUN" position as enginewarms up.
NOTE: A warm engine requires less chok-ing to start.° Move throttle control to desired running
position°o Allow engine to warm up for a few min-
utes before engaging tines.NOTE: If at a high altitude (3000 feet) orin cold temperatures (below 32°F), the car-buretor fuel mixture may need to beadjusted for best engine performance.See "TO ADJUST CARBURETOR" in theService and Adjustments section of thismanual.
NOTE: If engine does not start, see trou-bleshooting points.TILLING HINTS
_IkCAUTION: Until you are accustomed tohandling your tiller, start actual field usewith throttle in slow position (mid-waybetween "FAST" and "iDLE").° Tilling is digging into, turning over, and
breaking up packed soil before planting.Loose, unpacked soil helps root growth.Best tilling depth is 4" to 6". A tiller willalso clear the soil of unwanted vegeta-tion. The decomposition of this veg-etable matter enriches the soil.Depending on the climate (rainfall andwind), it may be advisable to till the soilat the end of the growing season to fur-ther condition the soil.
o Soil conditions are important for propertilling. Tines will not readily penetratedry, hard soil which may contribute toexcessive bounce and difficult handlingof your tiller. Hard soil should be mois-tened before tilling; however, extremelywet soil will "bali-up" or clump during till-ing. Wait until the soil is less wet in orderto achieve the best results. When tillingin the fall, remove vines and long grassto prevent them from wrapping aroundthe tine shaft and slowing your tillingoperation.
° You will find tilling much easier if youleave a row untilled between passes. Then go back between tilled row& Thereare two reasons for doing this. First, wide turns are much easier to negotiatethan about-faces. Second, the tillerwon't be pulling itself, and you, towardthe row next to it.
= Do not lean on handle. This takesweight off the wheels and reduces trac-tion.
11
Toget througha really tough section ofsod or hard ground, apply upward pres-sure on handle or lower the depth stake.
CULTIVATING
Cultivating is destroying the weedsbetween rows to prevent them from rob-bing nourishment and moisture from theplants. At the same time, breaking up theupper layer of soil crust will help retainmoisture in the soil. Best digging depth is1" to 3" (2.5-7.5 cm). Lower the outer sideshields to protect small plants from beingburied.
. Cultivate up and down the rows at aspeed which will allow tines to uprootweeds and leave the ground in roughcondition, promoting no further growth ofweeds and grass.

T_NI= SHEAR PiNSThe tine assemblies on your tiller aresecured to the tine shaft with shear pins(See "TINE REPLACEMENT" in theService and Adjustments section of thismanual). If the tiller is unusually overloaded orjammed, the shear pins are designed tobreak before internal damage occurs tothe transmission,o If shear pin(s) break, replace only with
those shown in the Repair Parts sectionof this manual
The warranty on this tiller does not coveritems that have been subjected to opera-tor abuse or negligence. To receive fullvalue from the warranty, the operator mustmaintain tiller as instructed in this manualSome adjustments will need to be madeperiodically to properly maintain your tiller. All adjustments in the Service andAdjustments section of this manual shouldbe checked at least once each season.• Once a year you should replace the
spark plug, clean or replace air filter, andcheck tines and belts for wear. A newspark plug and clean air filter assureproper air-fuel mixture and help yourengine run better and last longer.

LUBRICATIONUse only high quality detergent oil ratedwith API service classification SF, SG orSFI, Select the oil's SAE viscosity gradeaccording to your expected temperature°
NOTE: Although multi-viscosity' oils (5W-30, 10W-30, etc.) improve starting in coldweather, these multi-viscosity oils willresult in increased oil consumption whenused above 32°F (0°C). Check yourengine oil level more frequently to avoidpossible engine damage from running lowon oil.
Change the oil after ever,./50 hours ofoperation or at least once a year if the tilleris not used for 50 hours in one year.Check the crankcase oil level before start-ing the engine and after each five (5)hours of continuous use. Add SAE 30motor oil or equivalent. Tighten oil fillerplug securely each time you check the oillevel.TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL
Determine temperature range expectedbefore oil change. All oil must meet APIservice classification SF, SG or SH.• Be sure tiller is on level surface.
= Oil will drain more freely when warm.° Use a funnel to prevent oil spill on tiller,
and catch oil in a suitable container,° Remove drain plug.° Tip tiller forward to drain oil.• After oil has drained completely, replace
oil drain plug and tighten securely.° Remove oil filler plug. Be careful not to
allow dirt to enter the engine.

,_CAUTION: Tines are sharp. Weargloves or other protection when handlingtines.A badly wom tine causes your tiller to workharder and dig more shallow. Most impor-tant, worn tines cannot chop and shredorganic matter as effectively nor bury it asdeeply as good tines. A fine this worn eneeds to be replaced,
New Tine_ne
To maintain the superb tilling perfor-mance of this machine the tines shouldbe checked for sharpness, wear, andbending, particularly the tines which arenext to the transmission. If the gapbetween the tines exceeds 3-1/2 inchesthey should be replaced or straightenedas necessary.New tines should be assembled. Sharp-ened tine edges will rotate rearwardfrom above.

TO ADJUST THROTTL_ CONTROLCABLE
, Loosen cable clamp screw to allowcable to move.
o Move throttle control lever on upper han-dle to "FAST" position.
o Pull throttle cable out to end of travelo Hold cable in this position and tighten
clamp screw securely.TO ADJUST CARBURETOR
The carburetor has a high speed jet andhas been preset at the factory and adjust-ment should not be necessary. However, minor adjustments may be required tocompensate for differences in fuel, temper-ature, altitude or toad. If the carburetordoes need adjustment, proceed as follows.
IDLE RPM ADJUSTMENT° To adjust idle RPM, rotate throttle link-.
age counterclockwise and hotd againststop while adjusting idle speed adjustingscrew to obtain 1750 RPM. Releasethrottle linkage.
ACCELERATION TEST° Move throttle control lever from "SLOW"
to "FAST_'position. If engine hesitatesor dies, turn needle valve out (counter-clockwise) 1/8 turn_ Repeat test andcontinue to adjust, if necessary, untilengine accelerates smoothly.
High speed stop is factory adjusted. Donot adjust or damage may result.
IMPORTANT: Never tamper with the en-gine governor, which is factory set forproper engine speed, overspeeding theengine above the factory high speed set-ting can be dangerous, if you think theengine-governed high speed needs adjust-ing, contact your nearest authorized ser-vice center/department, which has theproper equipment and experience to makeany necessary adjustments.

Immediatelyprepare your tiller for storageat the end of the season or if the unit willnot be used for 30 days or more._kCAUTION: Never store the tiller withgasoline in the tank inside a buildingwhere fumes may reach an open flame orspark. Allow the engine to cool beforestoring in any enclosure,
TILLER
o Clean entire tiller (See "CLEANING" inthe Customer Responsibilities section ofthis manual).
o Inspect and replace belts, if necessary(See belt replacement instructions in theService and Adjustments section of thismanual).
• Lubricate as shown in the Customer
Responsibilities section of this manual°o Be sure that all nuts, bolts and screws
are securely fastened. Inspect movingparts for damage, breakage and wear.Replace if necessary.
• Touch up all rusted or chipped paint sur-faces; sand lightly before painting.
ENGINEFUEL SYSTEMIMPORTANT: It is important to preventgum deposits from forming in essential fuelsystem parts such as the carburetor, fuelfilter, fuel hose, or tank during storage.also, experience indicates that alcoholblended fuels (called gasohol or usingethanol or methanol) can attract moisturewhich leads to separation and formation ofacids during storage. Acidic gas can dam-age the fuel system of an engine while instorage.° Drain the fuel tank.• Start the engine and let it run until the
fuel lines and carburetor are empty.o Never use engine or carburetor cleaner
products in the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur.
o Use fresh fuel next season.
NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptablealternative in minimizing the formation offuel gum deposits during storage, Add sta-bilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or storagecontainer. Always follow the mix ratiofound on stabilizer container. Run engineat least 10 minutes after adding stabilizerto allow the stabilizer to reach the carbure-tor. Do not drain the gas tank and carbu-retor if using fuel stabilizer.
ENGINE OIL
Drain oil (with engine warm) and replacewith clean oil. (See "ENGINE" in theCustomer Responsibilities section of thismanual).
CYLINDER
° Remove spark plug,,, Pour 1 ounce (29 ml) of oil through
spark plug hole into cylinder.° Pull starter handle slowly several times
to distribute oil.o Replace with new spark plug.
OTHER
° Do not store gasoline from one seasonto another.
° Replace your gasoline can if your canstarts to rust. Rust and/or dirt in yourgasoline will cause problems.
o If possible, store your unit indoors andcover it to give protection from dust anddirt.
o Cover your unit with a suitable protectivecover that does not retain moisture, Donot use plastic. Plastic cannot breathewhich allows condensation to form and
will cause your unit to rust,IMPORTANT: Never cover tiller while
engine and exhaust areas are still warm,
