Jun Dayrit, with Ann Cecille. He also asked for blessings—for our new set of leaders, especially Pres. Fred Pascual and Ann Menchu and a safe trip for our sister clubs. Finally he prayed for guid-ance and wisdom for Inspiring Gover-nor Al Montecillo and Spouse Beth, that they may inspire Rotarians to do more and be more.

During the sit-down dinner, PRID Paing Hechanova delivered a brief message about the Club’s projects through the years (full text on p. 12), in a wide range of areas. Then came birth-day greetings for PRID Paing who was to turn 90 on July 8 and Incoming Pres. Fred who would be 70 at the stroke of midnight.

PDG Pepito Bengzon came up to present the inductees -- Officers: Eduardo Galvez, Secretary; James Julian Lim, Asst. Treasurer; and PP Alfredo “Fred” Parungao, Comp-troller.

Advisers: PP Renato M. Lim-joco, PP David Ackerman, PDG J. Antonio “Tony” Quila, PDG Isidro “Sid” Garcia, PDG Robert Kuan, and PDG Jose A.R. “Pepz” Beng-zon, III.

Directors: Derrick Anthony “Derrick” Tan, Jose Ramon “Bom” Villatuya, Treasurer, Philip Alex-ander “Philip” Soliven, Richard “Dick” C. Upton, George Barce-lon, Michael Escaler, IPP Conra-do “JunJun” Dayrit III, PN Peter Manzano, Legal Counsel, PE Vicente “Bimbo” Mills Jr., Luis Angel “Louie” Aseoche, Vice-President, and Alfredo “Fred” Pascual, President.

On PDG Sonny Coloma’s shoul-ders lay the task of charging the in-ductees, centering his message on the RI theme, “Be the Inspiration.” He drew parallels to the Sermon on the Mount and the Eight Beatitudes. He also praised the Club for inspiring other clubs to aspire for “the gold standard in service excellence” and for the quality of the members. He lauded Pres. Fred for a “life of outstanding achievement in the fields of business, finance and edu-cation” and for accepting the responsi-

Service ProjectsWe shall be carrying on with our ongoing service projects, in-cluding one started under IPP Jun Jun Dayrit—the communi-ty-based drug rehabilitation project with Caritas Manila. This year, we shall also be initiating three (3) new projects and re-viving the grants program of a decade ago, the Partnership in Service Program (PSP).

We shall open the PSP to clubs in District 3830, with grants of up to P100,000 on a 5:1 fund sharing for projects acceptable to the Club. That means the participant club will put up only P2,000 for every P10,000 we give.

The budget boost means increased commitments for our hu-manitarian projects, which in turn means we shall be needing more hands to the work. We are thus calling on our members to show up for the projects. This year we are doing away with fundraisers so as not to dissipate our energy and time and so that we can devote our time and talent to doing projects and deploying our resources for our reasons for being: service and fellowship.

ClusteringTo raise attendance at the Tuesday meetings and get our mem-bers more engaged, we are clustering our members into small groups that will take turns in taking charge of organizing the GMMs. Each cluster will be headed by a director.

Club BulletinTo save on publication cost, only a summary form of the Kaun-laran--one sheet, back-to-back--will be printed for a meeting. The full version of each issue will be in digital format (PDF) and posted on the RCM website and Facebook, and sent via Viber to the members.

Friday Night Lights (FNL) & Mini SocialsOur monthly fellowship event, FNL, will continue, and will be held on the Friday of the third Tuesday of the month. We shall ensure that every member of the club will be invited to at least one mini social during the year.

We’re off to a bright start! I invite everyone to come on board and join us, as we heed R.I. President Barry Rassin’s call to “Be the Inspiration.”

cob Ong and Dir. Charles Ong of RC Cebu; IP Jose De Guzman Jr. and IPP Jojo Cuison of RC Dagupan; and IP Marlon Lapid of RC Vigan.

IPP Keith Harrison of RC Bangkok, who was unable to make it to the welcome dinner, came to the induction ball on the 7th at The Pen.

He sought out Pres. Fred to personally congratulate and hand to him his club’s donation of US$1,000. The two gentlemen also found time to sign a document renewing their matched-clubs ties.

We would like to thank the members who so graciously provided airport transfers and took on the task of transport-ing the sister club delegations to and from various points during their stay in Manila—IPP Jun Jun Dayrit, PDG Robert Kuan, PN Peter Manzano, PE Bimbo Mills, PP Sonny Tambunting, Dir. Derrick Tan, and PP Ed-die Yap.

PDG Robert and PP Sonny, both frequent visitors to Kota Kinabalu, where they are always overwhelmed by the hospitality of their hosts, made it a point to somehow re-turn the favor. PDG Robert treated Pres. Philip and spouse Ooi Kim Eon and Paul Foronda to breakfast at Ling Nam upon their arrival on the 5th of July, while PP Sonny hosted lunch for the KK first couple. Golf Chair Dan Lim made arrangements for a golf game at Southwoods, with PDG Pepito Bengzon and PP Roland Young playing with the guests.

ily joining Fred and the other inductees on stage, District Governor Al Montecillo swore in the club’s leadership team for 2018-19.

PDG Tony Quila came up to preside over the ceremo-nial turnover from Immediate Past Pres. Jun Jun to new Pres. Fred.

Introduced by PP Eddie Yap, Pres. Fred in his inau-gural speech spoke of his plans in terms of projects, putting emphasis on the revival of the Partnership in Service Pro-gram and the clustering system as well as his focus on edu-cational projects that are impactful, sustainable and with long-ranging benefits. (full text of speech on p.9)

PDG Tony returned to the stage, this time to present the first batch of TRF donors for the year. For the Glob-al Grant for the Ilocos Sur Water Project: Tess Aseoche, PDG Pepito Bengzon, Rina Collantes, Celine Ar-teche Cornejo, Cecille Dayrit, Chris Ferareza, Ze-naida Floresca, Francisco Galvez, Angela Garcia, Sabrina Panlilio, Menchu Pascual, Kim Angelo Pena, Gabrielle Alexis Quila, and Mita Soliven.

For the Annual Program Fund: PP David Acker-man, PP Felix Amparo, Grace Ang, Arthur Antoni-

no, Irene Barcelon, Rodrigo Escudero Borromeo, PP Cesar Campos, Papat Escaler, Tesha Garcia, PRID Paing Hechanova, PDG Robert Kuan, Lu Limjoco,PP Rene Limjoco, PP Carlo Rufino, Cat Rufino, Chinit Rufino, Rose Padiernos, Johnny Sy, Johnson Tan, Dick Upton, Dellie Yap, Caling Young and Daniel Zumbuehl.

PDG Tony also announced that PDG Robert Kuan has pledged a gift of US$50,000 to the TRF, which should sub-stantially increase our annual giving for the year.

The hall quieted down for the speech of the guest speak-er, DG Al Montecillo, who in his speech demonstrated how well he knows the Club and its projects. He said that he wants to focus on Education, with a new project aimed at reinforc-ing the Rotary-school work link through projects based on a school’s real needs. As it happens, Education is also where

53rd Induction Ball of the Rotary Club of MakatiJuly 6, 2018, Rigodon Ballroom, The Peninsula Manila

Iam honored to speak to you on this very auspicious occa-sion. . . the beginning of a new chapter in a life-long jour-ney of service that I have embarked on… this time, with

the finest travel buddies by my side..It is a distinct privilege to walk—and work—alongside

the members of the Rotary Club of Makati—my club, my family.

I feel no awkwardness when I call RC Makati my family, and my fellow Rotarians here, my brothers. For truly, that’s what they are—or have become to me. This is a club where strangers quickly turn into acquaintances, acquaintances morph into friends, friends bloom into family.

Such is the fruit of fellowship—a beautiful word, which in Rotary we associate with service. Yes, fellowship and ser-vice go hand in hand. In the Rotary context, one is useless without the other. After all, Rotary was born as a call for hu-man connection on a cold, winter night in February 1905. How noble that in no time, Rotary transformed itself into something lofty—the human call to service.

During our administration, my team and I will be guided by the mandate for us Rotarians to have fun and to do good in the world. In practice, our having fun and doing good are both happening, but, in most cases, separately in time and space. For example, our socials and fellowships happen in nice places, separately from the location of our humanitarian projects.

As I see it, though, a more appropriate way is for us to have fun while we do good. That is, the fun and good are still separate but now synchronous (or happening at the same time). We do this sometimes when we go on a feeding project in a provincial area and then have barbecue or lechon party in the nearby ranch of a fellow Rotarian.

The ideal, of course, is for us to have fun in the good we do. So fun and good become integrated as one. This means that we experience joy and fun as we Rotarians work in

groups and engage hands on in our service projects. I call on my fellow Rotarians in RC Makati to be person-

ally involved in our many projects and have fun in our service engagements. Through our Foundation, we Rotarians in RC Makati are the steward of substantial resources that we need to deploy for the good of our people and country at this time of greatest need. So we are not anymore going to dissipate our time and energy in fund-raising. Rather, we will commit our-selves to doing service projects.

For this, we will organize accordingly. We are reviv-ing the system introduced by PP Eddie Yap three years ago of clustering our members into small groups that will work together under the leadership of a senior Rotarian. The ob-jective is mainly to alternately organize meetings to improve attendance, as well as to encourage recruitment of new mem-bers. These groups can also be mobilized to work together on our many service projects

In lining up our projects this Rotary year, my team and I are guided by the belief that successive leaders in organiza-tions, as anywhere else, must build on one another’s contri-butions to accelerate growth and progress. It goes without saying, of course, that we should retain or revive only the pro-jects that have worked and are still needed.

So we will continue with our time-tested portfolio of on-going projects. These projects straddle a wide range of hu-man concerns, particularly, in Rotary’s 6 areas of focus. Most of these projects have run several years, decades even. These existing projects alone can keep our members busily engaged.

Let me cite just 3 examples of our enduring projects:No. 1: Our nutrition project—started in the 1970s as a

Mothercraft Project in Makati “barrios” chaired by Rotarian PRID Paing Hechanova. Now, no longer in Makati but in the more needy areas, and this time under Rotarian PP Freddie Borromeo.

No. 2: Our BATS project—Books Across the Seas. In-herited from US-AID and Amcham in 1988. Still running. Over 15 million books distributed to some 65,000 schools and libraries across the country, often through partner Ro-tary Clubs in the target localities.

No. 3: Our surgical missions project at the Philippine General Hospital, started in 1989 by the late Rotarian Dr. Boy Hilvano. Now being carried out by another doctor, Ro-tarian Andrew Prieto

In terms of revival, we have the Partnership in Service Program (PSP), which we are bringing back, this time with a bang. Through the PSP, we will unleash the power of part-nerships in delivering service to many more communities and much more effectively. We had it up to about a decade ago as you may read in today’s issue of our newsletter, Kaunlaran.

Under the new PSP, RC Makati will provide a partner club in our RI District 3830 with matching funds of up to

I believe I’ve expressed the senti-ments of all the visiting Rotarians and guests in the audience when I

say that whenever we are invited to your club induction, you make all of us feel how great it is to be enveloped by your heartwarming fellowship and espritdecorps . Let’s all give them a warm round of applause in appreciation.

Truly, the Rotary Club of Makati inspires other Rotary Clubs to aspire to attain the gold standard in service ex-cellence. From your ranks have come one Rotary International Director, our esteemed mentor, PRID Paing Hech-anova, and six district governors, and tonight, the 20th president of the Uni-versity of the Philippines will be in-stalled as the 53rd president of the Ro-tary Club of Makati.

President Fred Pascual is well pre-pared and fully equipped to be your inspiring leader for this Rotary Year. His life story is a story of outstanding achievement in the fields of business, fi-nance and education. This year, instead of riding into the proverbial sunset after an illustrious career, he has accepted the responsibility of leading a truly great Rotary Club. At the stroke of midnight tonight, he will turn 70 years young. In-deed, he can look back with the sense of fulfillment and satisfaction on a well live

life, the company of his wife Menchu, their children Czarina, Carol and Car-los, and eight grandchildren--Aaron, Anica, Gemma, Keisha, Safa, Chema, Miles and Chelsea.

Fellow Rotarians and friends, as we reflect upon the meaning of the RI theme, “Be the Inspiration,” we are re-minded of the Sermon on the Mount from which we learned the Eight beati-tudes. The beatitudes are often referred to us the Be-Attitudes, as each of these speaks of a state of mind, a feeling, an orientation towards values and beliefs that serves as a guide to daily living. When we affirm Rotary’s motto “Ser-vice Above Self,” we uphold two beati-tudes namely, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heav-en” and “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” We also realize it’s an act of obedience to the power and will of God above our own self in-terest. When we perform acts of charity and kindness towards the members of the communities that we serve, we are demonstrating our fidelity to the beati-tude, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” When we follow the 4 Way Test, and espouse true reason and justice, we exemplify the beatitude, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall

be filled” or satisfied from deep within. When we promote peace and conflict resolution as an area of focus we mani-fest our belief in the beatitude, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.” Indeed, fellow Rotarians, like the thousands of people whose lives have been touched, improved and changed by the breadth and depth of their service programs, we have witnessed the beatitudes of the self less Rotarians of RC Makati, they provide us with well springs of inspira-tion.

And so, President Fred and mem-bers of your leadership team, may I ask you this question, are you prepared to serve and be the inspiration so that the Rotary Club of Makati achieves greater heights of service achievement this Ro-tary Year? In view of the solemnity of this occasion, may I request you my fel-low Rotarians, to please stand as I now call on our inspiring governor, Alfredo “Al” Montecillo. And Governor Al, may I present to you for induction your inspiring president, Alfredo “Fred” Pascual and the officers, directors and advisers of the great Rotary club of Makati.

Maramingsalamatatmagandanggabipo.

P100,000 on a 5-to-1 basis for a joint project acceptable to RC Makati. So the partner club needs to put up only P2,000 for every P10,000 from us. For larger projects, we can rope in other partner clubs so we can multiply the amount of PSP funding from RC Maka-ti accordingly.

In the earlier incarnation of PSP, RC Makati released some P10 million in outright grants over 11 years. This time, we have budgeted P10 million just for this year alone. On a per year calcula-tion, the current year’s funding is more than 10 times compared to before. Why? Because there is much more work to do in so many places for so many people,

and the time to do it is NOW. Now, if we are to help accelerate the country’s so-cioeconomic development.

Regarding new projects for RC Makati, it is no secret about my bias for education. I want education to be the tool not only to lift families from pov-erty, but also to equip our human re-sources so they can better help improve the lives of our people and contribute to nation building.

Using VISSER, a set of learning in-struments developed by UP scientists, I want to expose selected high school students, in particular, to the exciting world of STEM—not stem cell, but Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. These are where we are weak, these are where we need to be strong.

The STEM courses are what will en-able the educated young Filipinos to innovate, to create, to invent, to solve problems that have bogged down our country for generations.

My fellow Rotarians in RC Makati, let us put our resources—time, talent, and treasure—to impactful and sus-tainable projects so we can do good in the world and have fun doing good. Let us work with others so we can un-leash the power of partnerships. Let us push ourselves to be true to our oath as Rotarians—exemplars of the lofty ideal of Service Above Self. Let us Be the In-spiration to all.

Thank you, and good evening.

I wish to convey my sincerest grati-tude and appreciation to the Rotary Club of Makati for hosting together with your daughter club RC Makati Business District the District Hando-ver last June 16 and to Past President David Ackerman and his spouse, CP Mache Torres-Ackerman, for their out-standing chairmanship of the event. This dynamite couple made our Dis-trict Handover a conversation piece among our Rotary clubs and guests and kept the Viber groups abuzz for weeks due to its outstanding success. And lest I forget, special thanks to some members of your club who fully supported the District Handover as Major Sponsors of the event: Florante Aguila, Gary Philips, Michael Escaler and Felix Ang; and many more of your members who also contributed by way of sponsoring a page in our Souvenir Magazine.

My friends in the Rotary Club of Makati, my spouse Beth and I thank you for inviting us to your Handover & Induction Ceremonies. It is truly a dis-tinct honor to be addressing such high-ly distinguished Rotarians.

As you move forward to your 53rd year, still, the Rotary Club of Makati remains to be the most outstanding club in District 3830. I thank the Rota-ry Club of Makati for spearheading the creation of so many other Rotary clubs

in this part of the Rotary world and the life-changing projects that you have im-plemented over the years. I commend the past leadership of your club, and the fine men who involved each and everyone of the members of the club into projects that touched the souls and made a difference in the lives of others, particularly those who need them most. You are leaders whose dedication and commitment to serve beyond yourselves have made so many communities better places to live in.

We are gathered here tonight, not only to witness the transition of leader-ship from one outstanding leader --- Great President Junjun Dayrit to anoth-er --- Inspiring President Fred Pascual, but because we share a common goal. We are gathered here tonight because we care deeply about our community, and we strive in a variety of ways to en-hance the quality of life in our commu-nity.

Some wonderful images come to mind when I think of the communi-ties benefitting from the projects of RC Makati. I think of the countless youth, even senior citizens and other curious minds eager to learn from the wonder-ful books that filled the libraries from your Books-Across-The Seas Program. I think of the happy community people in the Rotary Homes gratified with your support. I think of the countless medi-cal missions that many communities benefitted from and the Rotary clubs that you have assisted thru your Part-nerships-In-Service Program.

But year in and year out, there are people who live on the edge of soci-ety. Many still do not or cannot finish school, some have troubled past, some suffer from mental or physical disabili-ties, and so on. That is why our work in Rotary is never done.

It is tempting to simply pretend that these problems don’t exist, or convince ourselves that these are small, inconse-

quential problems that affect just a few. But left unchecked, these are the kinds of issues that can dramatically affect our quality of life. At a certain point, it is difficult to sustain a community when too many people are living at the mar-gins. There are still many communities on a downward spiral. Homelessness, increasing unemployment, lack of live-lihood and lost chances for the youth to be in school…… lead to fewer opportu-nities for development of our commu-nities. When communities begin to go on a downslope, it is up to people like us who care deeply about the fate of our community, to do something before the damage becomes irreparable.

My friends in the Rotary Club of Makati, our being Rotarians is an indi-cation of our blessedness. This is why I enjoin you to continuously be generous and not grow weary of digging into your pockets to provide the resources and necessary help to improve our communi-ties.

One of our major thrusts in the District this Rotary year is the Rotary-School Partnership Program in which we look forward to support out-of-school youth, abandoned and/or homeless kids or whose parents cannot provide and

F ELLOW Rotarians, spouses and guests – good evening.

Tonight, we are celebrating our 53rd Induction of Officers. Fifty-three years ago, Makati was just a sleepy suburb of Manila. A month ago, the City Government of Makati paid trib-ute to the Club for its contribution to the development of its people. In its first ten years, we operated a Post Office box outside of City Hall, we had nutrition centers, a pig dispersal project for poor families, we had a mobile library and programs in livelihood, health, educa-tion and self-government.

A nd 38 year s ago in 1979, a Fi l ipino ch i ld f rom Barangay Guadalupe Viejo was given the first polio oral vaccine, the first of over 2.5 billion children in the world to be safe from being crippled by polio.

are on the streets begging, scavenging, probably living a life of crime however petty, rather than being in school and being educated.

We are encouraging clubs to adopt a school, make a through Needs Assess-ment in that adopted school and hence-forth conduct their various community projects in the school community. You will agree that basic education is a good start for a life of opportunity. Good and proper education uplifts the dignity of a person and provides equality among fellow beings. Education provides equal opportunities to the people to rise in life. A learned person is more likely to contribute towards the development of society, thus becoming partners in na-tion-building. Education is the best way to move forward not only for an individ-ual but also for a country. It is the only tool that can help to remove millions of people from the jaws of poverty. If peo-ple are empowered with knowledge, they cannot be exploited by others.

And this is the reason why I am so grateful for your club’s offer of support to Rotary clubs in our district thru the Partnerships-In-Service Program or PSP, where Rotary clubs can be provid-ed grant support in pursuit of the dis-trict’s RSPP Program. You INSPIRE us for your unconditional and unwaver-ing commitment, not only to the com-munities you serve, but also to the Ro-tary clubs needing your support.

I thank the Rotary Club of Makati, whose generosity has become a model for munificence. I pray that the mem-bers of the Rotary Club of Makati will continue to give. EVERYONE OF US HAS SO MUCH TO GIVE and giving is the greatest gift one can offer to oth-ers whether it is monetary, material or encouraging words, a caring embrace, a tap on the back or a simple smile.

And it’s because you continue to give, that you continue to receive. Luke 6:38 says, “Give and you shall receive.” That’s the Law of Giving. It is like throwing a stone up in the air, after which the stone falls down naturally. It

is called the Law of Gravity. You can’t touch it, you can’t see it. But the Law of Gravity is real. It doesn’t matter whether you believe it or not.. you can’t change it. Because it is a Law. I believe God has already rigged the universe with the Law of Giving, in the same way that He has rigged the universe with the Law of Gravity.

My friends, what we give may not even cause a dent in our resources, our wealth, our knowledge, our person; they may be little and insignificant to those who give; it may just be or may not even be a scratch in the surface, but it could mean a future for a poor child unable to study because of lack of financial re-sources, it could mean a life for the sick unable to seek medical assistance, it could mean a shelter for the homeless.

As I sa id: EV ERYONE HAS MUCH TO GIVE.. And NO ONE HAS EVER BECOME POOR BY GIV-ING!!

Thank you and a pleasant evening to all.

The Club has a tradition of service and this Rotary Year, we are going to be led by a distinguished person from the academe, the former president of the University of the Philippines – Mr. Fred Pascual.

Let us then all join with President Fred and Menchu. As RI President Bar-ry Rassin said, “Let us be the INSPI-RATION to continue doing good in the world”.

Together we can, and we will in-spire the world.

“Mabuhay si PP Jun Jun at Cecille Dayrit! ”

“Mabuhay si President Fred at Menchu Pascual! ”

PGH SurGIcal mISSIon, 4tH In 2017-2018

THE Club once again partnered with the Philippine Gen-eral Hospital (PGH) for an in-hospital surgical mission

on June 16. This time, 12 patients went under the knife for colostomy closure, a delicate surgical procedure.

The mission was performed by a full complement of UP-PGH health professionals composed of 14 resident sur-geons—CM Almanon, JA Baltazar, CZ Banzuela, LG Bragais, MC Cabanilla, ASCoco, HD Monroy, AP de la Paz, D Sacdalan, MT Tampo, VA Venida, M Villanue-va, AQ M Yuga, and MA Zamora— five anesthesiologists, and a number of nurses and nursing assistants.

This mission, the fourth for RY 2017-2018, brings to 42 the number of patients treated during the year. The others were a thyroid mission in November 2017, a breast and thy-roid mission in February and a head-neck-breast mission in May, each with ten patients.

Last June 28 at the RCM Clubhouse, Pres. Jun Jun Dayrit and Surgical Missions Chair Andrew Prieto turned over to Dr. Rodney Dofitas, Chief of the PGH’s Di-vision of Surgical Oncology, a desktop computer and OR in-struments for use at the state hospital

The surgical missions project is among the Club’s long-est-running health initiatives. Now on its 28th year, it is a

partnership between the Club and PGH initiated by the late Dr. Boy Hilvano, one-time chairman of the PGH’s Depart-ment of Surgery, soon after he joined the Club in 1989. One of seven RCMakati members honored with the Service Above Self Award, the highest recognition conferred by Rotary In-ternational on individual Rotarians, Boy Hilvano chaired the committee until his demise in October 2014. Its current chair is Dr. Andrew Prieto, a cardiologist.

tHanKSGIVInG maSS to end a Banner year

ON Thursday, June 28, a group of our members and Anns gathered at the RCM Clubhouse for a mass

The Club was also honored by the City of Makati with the Outstanding Corporate Citizen Award in June and earlier, with a Panata Award for our Nutrition Program by the Dept. of Social Welfare De-partment.

As is always the case in the Club, the religious occa-sion segued ever so naturally to fellowship hour as every-one partook of dinner hosted by Pres. Jun Jun & Cecille. As it turned out, this was the very last entry in the Club’s fellowship program for the year.

Joining Pres. Jun Jun & Cecille in giving thanks for a very good year were PP Felix & Tessie Amparo,
